Rick Menefee: "Shadow Stockman"

The new add'l pics certainly appear to do this knife a lot more justice:thumbup:

The blade grinds, nicks etc look great:)

I'd like to see some pics of the Canvas Micarta after it has been carried/used a while. I love the look of it when it's new, but none of the knives I owned that were hafted with it fared too well when handled and used. I have really oily skin and it seems to turn dark/almost black on me:confused:

Mike & all,
Ever since knife Co's (or whoever), invented man made materials for handles, they have been trying & using them,on traditional knives. They just were limited in the technology,& what came of it,what they had. If you study old traditional knives, you will see, there are plenty out there, with synthetic scales, that are way older than you or I
I myself do not consider the scales non-traditional.Rick does micarta inlaid shields,on micarta scales & guess what,Remington did that on pocket knives, before I was born (not micarta, obviously, but some type of comp. material)
Two thoughts here ,
one,if there was micarta a hundred years back, alotta old time collectable knives would be floatin' around with scales in better shape
two,I hear alot of trad. forumite's here saying , "that'd be an awesome knife to hand down through the generations" . Well,a knife like this one here in this thread, will be around in working order, with no cracks in the scales,a waaay lot longer than some materials that we droool over.
-Vince :)

Those are very good points Vince. I know we have had "other" :D materials used for many years. I was just making reference regarding the micarta, because until recently, we really didn't see many slip joints around with it...

No doubt it is very durable, and I'm sure if it were around back in the day, and reasonably priced, they would have used a lot of it because of the durability.
Plus, from Elliott's thoughts and a few others I have read, it does give good purchase in hand, which is a real plus for knives that will be used, especially in less than optimal weather conditions.

I have grown to like it, as well as G-10 on certain knives. The beatings can now commence :D... Not what I would consider "Traditional" in the sense, but cool looking and as you mentioned, they will last for many years.

Elliott, I hope my comment about resembling a Rainbow Trout, because of what appears to be a light colored red/ orange stripe, wasn't taken the wrong way. I made mention of it, because here in Oregon, we have some of the best Rainbow fishing to be found, and I've fished for them since I was about 4 years old. I've always thought they looked really cool
Besides, I've never noticed that in any pics of micarta before

Mike,Like Durwood says, that "look" it has, new, will definitely change.

It is synthetic , but certainly not,non traditional,IMO.

Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the user, lol
-Vince :)

Very true. It just takes me a little longer than others to adapt to change. :D

I've always been that way. Heck, I didn't give in and get a computer until about 6 years ago. Now if I didn't have it, I would probably have to be medicated.

I finally gave in and started Texting a couple months ago, because my boss was always on me to do it. Now I do it more than calling

I'm slowly coming around :D

Don't be silly, Mike, no offense taken whatsoever.
The micarta does have a light brownish hue in the center of the scale.

Without going too far off topic, I could never be offended by any reference to trout. I had some great times fly fishing for them years ago in the Wind River Range in WY and currently live in one of the best trout fishing areas in the east. (See info on the Davidson River)

Thats cool. I've never fished Wyoming, but I have a cousin there, so hopefully someday  The Davidson River looks like a great place to fish. Very serene looking.

Being as how its your thread, and you like fishing, I'll post a link for you.

The Deschutes River is almost in my backyard where we live here in Bend. People travel from all over to fish this river.
If you ever get out this way, bring your fishin pole

Rob, that was one of the first images of the knife I had seen but for a couple that Rick had sent.

I didn't want to say anything about the knife in the Menefee thread until I had a chance to actually receive it and brag on it a little. :D

I don't blame you, it's a fantastic knife!

Elliott
Great pictures. That really looks like a great knife that is going to get a bunch of use. Those are three really pretty blades on that guy. Nice score!!
Happy New Year.
Rick

Glad you all like it. It hasn't left my pocket since it arrived!

(Had a little chat on the phone with Rick today about it as well.)

Great lookin' knife, Elliott. Congrats. Rick really did a first rate job - hell, he even nailed the pulls! ;)

Geeesh...try to ring some of the computer nerd outta me over the long weekend and see what happens ....Menefee goes and finishes a dang 3-blader

Looks real good from what I can see and, Elliott, since you're happy with it IT must be great. Congrats to Rick on his first stockman and congrats to you for acquiring it. Very nice way to start the new year.

We forgive you, Kerry. Some things just aren't meant to change. ;)

When I was talking to Rick yesterday he still had Reese's "go by" knife on hand so we were comparing some notes on the build. I was surprised to learn that Rick's knife is nearly .02" slimmer than Reese's "shadow" across the scales.

Yep, she's a keeper for sure. :cool::thumbup:

Nice...well I betchya Rick's not going to start crankin out a bunch of 3-bladers so you will be one of the fortunate few happy owners.:cool:

We few, we happy few...

(I was very fortunate to be at the right place at the right time and for Rick to present me with the opportunity.)

Elliot, I think He did a helluva of a job!IMHO.
And if anybody deserves one of his 3 blade knives,
it's you my friend! Know how much you like'em!
and that's a great EDC right there!
Kinda like a Vintage Case 33092 only nicer!IMHO:D
Congrats!

Jason

Hello to all. For a long time my father worked as a carpenter and he would always carry a stock man in his pocket. He liked it because it would not bring his pants down like a sheath knife and he had three blades in it. This knife here makes me want to go and get to work. It is the first time I see a stockman in a shadow pattern and it sure is stunning. You sure got a fine knife Mr. Blues and Rick sure made a great knife. Congrats to both of you.
