Good stuff man, it's like we're related.

I'm getting the hang of it. I now have a drawer dedicated to my growing pile of gear/blades. It was spread across my dresser but..you know, apparently the new house isn't supposed to look like a surplus store.:D

If any of you haven't seen my thread yet, I'm working on a Becker folder...

Almost there.

Yes. I started out looking for the Maxpedition and quickly found the Utg. It's half the price, so I'm wondering about quality. Seams, stitching, etc. But the reviews say it's holding up for 2+ years. For $30..just wondering if any of youse guys had drug it through the bush.

you'll be happy.
I've been dragging mine all over hell and beyond for 3+ years and no problems. the 1.75L CRU-182 vodka bottle fits and the slip pocket on the opposite side would be perfect for a magwa to ride in. Love the patch, too.

Anyone here hammock regularly? I'm lookin at switchin to swinging for backpacking overnights but i just don't really know what i'm lookin for.

Are ENOs anything worth looking into? They're pretty trendy among the college crowd which usually is a clue for me to stay away. Just wonderin

if you weigh less than 225, you might look into a Byer Moskito -- it's a lot like the GT Skeeter Beeter only less expensive. $35-40.
Etowah makes a good tarp for a reasonable price, too -- get the 10x12 if you're not a gram counter -- the extra coverage in a storm is priceless. (I got mine after a sleet storm where the wind shifted enough to start blowing under the 10x10 I was using at the time)

I have slept in a few other expensive hammocks and to be honest this on works just fine! I mean they are all made from pretty much the same material, I don't use any fancy hanging systems just some 7mm climbing grade rope and some 550-cord. The tarp I use is a cheap 7'x9' nylon tarp I found at a general store years ago, it works but I find that it's a little small when its raining, when it rains I like to angle it steeper and tuck my hammock way up in the crotch.

Great advice. I've been lookin around and found all the individual things im lookin for (tarp, bug net, etc) and I can put together a complete system for about 50 bucks! Thats a steal IMO.

Another satisfied user of the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter. I'll warn you though if you get the UL version like I have (this is probably true with any UL hammock), the skeeters can still bit you through the bottom of the hammock anywhere that your skin is touching. Ask me how I know

You just need to put a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, blanket, etc... between you and the needle-noses.

Yea, I think im gonna pull the trigger on a Grand Trunk UL and put down some sort of liner. Skeeters and no-see-ums are brutal down here in the lowcountry, they're a major nuisance.

For webbing, search a store called Arrowhead Equipment and get their polyester webbing -- it's very inexpensive and doesn't stretch like nylon webbing.

It's only 50 cent per foot, I got two 7-ft lengths and the loops are already sewn in (each loop takes a foot, so you end up with 2 6-ft straps).

Then you just need to decide which method you want to attach the straps to your hammock.

Yea, Im thinkin i can just use one continuous rope to hang my hammock. I found a neat little trick posted by some guy where the rope strings across the span between the trees and then wraps it around the trees and hooks the hammock up to each end. Then the tarp and rainfly can just be draped over the hammock hanging from the line. Poor description, but i think i've got a good idea of how to make it work.

Hammocks?

I love my Warbonnet Blackbird. Easy to set up and bug free!

Jeremy

Great lookin rig. This is exactly what i had in mind when i was setting out on my hammock search. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the pictures.

I made my tree straps out of seat belt webbing from a surplus store.
10' polyester cinch straps work well, too. (nylon = butt on the ground. it can stretch up to 40% of its length)

Thanks for the tip on the hammock and tarp. I'm about 185 soaking wet so i may take a look at that Moskito. I was thinkin just pickin up the GT Ultralight just cause the durn things hardly 20 bucks. I figure i can work out the kinks and get a feel for what im lookin for in a hammock rig without goin too overboard early.

Good to know, Thanks again

Seriously, im just beyond grateful for everyones help and input

I really like where this is going! I'm pumped to see the final product!

Thanks, after that picture was taken I drilled another hole and put in a spacer towards the back of the handle. Now all I have to do is round off the handle, sand/polish, countersink all holes, and finally sharpen. Then Pics...

Cool stuff DJ

Not sure if yall are hoops fans or not but im bummed iowa state couldnt knock off kansas. It's been a heck of a game. Dang, they panned the crowd and the ISU fans look like someone just took their lunch money....and then knocked up their mother

one notes that a certain amazing river has 8 of those 38 ounce straight walled guyot bottles

the price. oiy.

just saying.

Hmm, I've been carrying the Eskabar on and off for some months now and I found myself using it more and more. Before, when I carried folders only, I was a bit hesitant to use them for everything since junk can always end up in the moving parts, have bacteria, blahblah,... Don't have that hassle with the Eskie, but it took me a while to realize that. A small fixed blade is just so easy, you know? A quick rinse, maybe a sweep with a sponge and it's good to go... LOVE IT!

not sure where to re-post this in bladeforums/i know there are some esee guys here too so here's my tutorial on kydex sheaths: http://jungletraining.com/forums/showthread.php?21502-how-to-make-kydex-sheaths.

Thanks for the info, might come in handy some day! Very well pictured and detailed explanations, much appreciated.

There's a better place. I bought 5 a few weeks ago from a river dealer. They bought a closeout of 400.
