Thought I would break up the monotony of all of these knives!!:D

This is my single shot break action I have been working on for several years. I am not too far from installing the barrel and proofing the action. It will be chambered in 7X57R. I will leave the rest of the details for anyone who has questions, but to go ahead and answer one that may come up....No, I am not going into the gun business. I considered it, but that would suck all the fun out of it.

The stock blank just has me all weak in the knees. Just look at that figure!! and the black streaking is icing on the cake.

Once I finish this one, I will be making a .17HMR double rifle that should only weigh about 4 1/2 to 5 lbs.

Enjoy!!

Man, I'm sure going to want to see this one progress.....My dream rifle is a
single shot 30-06 with a tapered 26" octagon Bbl.
You've sure struck a cord, Bailey...!

Russ,

Not to send you into eminent doom.....but if you want to make one, I would be happy to share the plans with you.

I thought about making this one in 30-06, but rimmed cartridges work better in break actions, and the chamber pressure on the '06 is a little high for my first try at this. Not to mention, all the gun nuts at the Dallas Safari club said"You have to chamber it in a classic European round". After a lot of consideration, the logical choice was 7X57R. Classic, capable, moderate recoil and lower pressure.

Funny you mentioned the tapered octagon barrel. That is what I will have on this one. I will be using a Shilen barrel and will machine it to octagon with integral quarter rib. No scope, it would mess up the lines too much.

Seriously.....if you want to build one......

Bailey,
I'd agree that the 7x57R is more of a classic, and it's actually quite enough
for just about any N.A. game except the big Browns, and with Noslers....

I'd love to see the plans for it. from what I can see of the action, it's
unique.

I'd have to put a peep on it, as my eyes don't like open sights anymore.

It would have to be something to work on a little at a time.....hopefully
finish in time to use someday...!

Heck yeah...

Well,

From design inception to now has only taken 7 freakin years!!

The design is pretty simple really. I didn't re-invent the wheel here. There are a couple of parts that will require me EDMing them for you, but I don't mind. I would get a kick out of someone else making one so I could trade notes. The cool thing is I don't have to alter the lock to make it a double rifle.

I will say you will need a good milling machine, or access to one.

I will bring it to Blade, so please come by and we can sit down and look it over.

Nice! That wood is freakin awsome. Mind if I stop by and take a look at that too?
I'm rebuilding a Remmington 1903 that had been sportarized back to it's old glory. Looking for a stock now, but don't think I'll find that kind of figure in any wood from the surplus rack!;)

Too cool. I have a Brno ZH344, which is an over/under in 7x57R. It is a great round.

The good think about those European boys is that they made rimmed versions of a lot of their standard hunting calibers. I saw an article on the Dakota Model 10 when it first came out and the test rifle was chambered in 7x64R Brenneke, which is comparable to .280 Remington. The thing shot 1 inch groups at 200 yards with factory ammo!!!!!!!!

Outstanding that must be simply awesome to one day make a bowie the next a sword and finish off with a rifle. I have a single shot in 7 X 57 and have a .275 Rigby which is the same as a 7 X 57 being built on an old mauser action right now. Please post pics of the work you are truly a craftsman in every sense of the word.

Bailey. Go get your FFL so you can start taking orders for matching knife/guns sets :)
I think 30-40 Krag would suffice ;)
With a damascus receiver!

Where's the engraving??? :D

Simply beautiful, nothing like the feeling harvesting an animal with a tool you've created. I've taken a few deer with a flatbow I've made and it's quite a spiritual feeling.

Sorry to the non/anti hunters if there are any here.

I have been considering a 30-40 krag double rifle. Seems like such a versatile round that can be loaded from 100 grain bullets up to 200 grain. Nice low pressure and not expensive to shoot either.

A good friend is encouraging me to look at the 4500/400 3" too. Nothing like 400 grains moving at 2200FPS. It's and old British buffalo stopper.

BTW, here is a sketch of the engraving I will be doing. The oval will have a Fallow buck majestically posed with gold border.

.303 Brit or 7.62 x 54 Russian might be good options too.

Bailey, very nice... please keep the photos updated. I have some Norma 7x57R I have no use for, if you want it email me.

I don't know shit about guns, I never hunted a day in my life, but I can spot good engineering a mile away (so to speak) and this looks great:thumbup::D.

I will follow this thread with great interest (over the next couple of years:)) especially for the engraving.

Marcel

That is just to cool,7*57 is a great often overlooked round.

Will,no need to apologize for whats right and comes natural.
