rifle in .308

Paper, people or game...makes a difference, IMHO.

.308 will do a lot - I own two(2) - Ruger MK II V/T and 700 LTR..both great shooters with 168 gr Black Hills Match JHP. Way too heavy to hunt with, IMHO and long range scoped.

Again depending on your intended primary purpose you might be better served with a Savage Sporter in .308 w/ a good 3-9X scope.

If you want a semi-automatic rifle, an AR-10 platform is going to give you better accuracy than the M1A will. A DPMS LR-308 runs for 900-1000 for the rifle itself and will shoot better than the M1A, plus it is must easier to add optics with the picatinny rail. You can add optics to an off the shelf M1A with the rail adapter, but it is less than ideal.

I have this, cost is on par with your mid-range setup. It is a Savage 10fcp in a Mcmillan A5 stock, Seekins base and low rings, and Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 w/ Z1000 reticle

I used to have a 10FCP. Awesome rifle. That is a lot of weapon for the money. Mine shot .5MOA groups on a good day.

Thank you guys. This has been a very fruitful discussion. I'm excited to go home and handle stuff at the local gun shop. They've got a great selection and I'm sure I'll find something that meets my needs perfectly.

BTW, Trijicon vs Leuopold? They both seem to be around $800 for 3-6x30 type scopes. Want an illuminated reticle.

Aimed shots people, aimed shots. It the S has really HTF then you're going to be counting every round.

I have a lefty Tikka T3 in 308 and it's a nice light gun that handles like a dream...but if you're right handed then a Savage would be a very easy gun to find and try out. You could pick up a decent used one at almost any gun show for around $300.

Well, there are a few choices you also haven't explored, if you're open minded.

You could get a steyr scout (bottom one, mine is .223 but more common in .308), or FN PBR (winchester pre-64' action, very nice rifle - its on the bottom):

If it HAD to be one of those three, I would buy the remmy 700. It's such a blank slate that as you grow as a shooter you can upgrade it to an almost rediculous extent, and anyone anywhere (practically) can work on it, fix it Etc. For glass in the price range I prefer the Trijicon, but it's hard to go wrong with anything leopold. I would say to buy the best glass you can (on the PBR, the scope was more expensive then the rifle).
ANd before anyone asks, the PBR has such a short rifle because the furthest I ever shoot is 200 yards (no longer ranges here).

^ what barrel length on the Win.?

I had forgotten about the Steyer Scout- how's it for accuracy?

i just got a Browning shortttrac 308 and it is great, accurate, light, modest recoil, and semi auto

It's an 18" barrel w/comp. The only down side (for me) is that the comp makes it quite loud. The gun is actually a FN PBR, and a nightforce 5-15 nxs scope (mark 4 rings). That rifle can cloverleaf @ 100 yards no problem, but it's quite heavy.

That particular scout has a cry treated, hand lapped barrel. It's a FANTASTIC rifle however, and IMHO for what you want it's perfect. With reloads, @ 100 yards I've done better than 1/2 moa, with the 2.5 power glass (best group was .43").

If you want more pics or info, feel free to ask

thanks I'm not the OP though, but did ask the ?'s :) I've always liked the concept of the Scout rifle

a friend has a forward scoped ruger frontier. I found target acquisition to be very fast and friendly to shoot. that steyr scout is a beautifal piece of machinery. shoots like a dream i'm sure.

I bought a Rem. 700 in .308, and had to have the chamber resized out of the box. The bolt knob and was broke off of it. They took care of me, but I'm selling it. Now, one to consider is Tikka. I love Sako, and its essentially an affordable Sako.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in .308 with a SS 10x scope , haven't shot it out much past 300 but it is far more accurate than I am , but I am trying to catch up to it :)

Great to see you like the Scout. I love Steyr and I love the Aug and Scout. I'll definitely be looking around for one. I'm only gonna buy from a local shop though. When it comes to guns I like to support the local shops!

A Scout in .308 would be a dream.

The DPMS A-10 .308 is a great "hog" gun.

The Remington .308 Police Special is a heavier bolt-action and it is darned accurate. This is good for bench shooting, deer hunting and varminting.

The Browning X-bolt .308 is lighter, but is a fast-handling deer rifle. Great in the field.

Don't forget the Kimber M84.
