rifle in .308

depends...

if you want long range capability and not the weight/length of a full out sniper rifle, take a peek at the Remington LTR (light tactical rifle)- w/ factory ammo (good factory ammo :)) it's a sub MOA out of the box- fluted heavy 20" barrel, aluminum bedded, kevlar/fiberglass H&S Precision stock, nice trigger (which can be made even nicer :)), etc

it was made w/ urban sniper's needs in mind, but is plenty capable to longer ranges- the lighter weight and shorter barrel also make it doable for a sporing rifle; I use mine to hunt deer and antelope :)

I own one and love it. But I'm actually contemplating selling it because I will never be anywhere near capable enough to do the rifle justice. I feel that it belongs in better hands than mine.

^ it's definitely a shooter, sand bags/bench w/ factory ammo (Federal Match) @ 100 yards

shoot it, don't sell it! :D

Yep. That looks exactly the same as mine sandbagged shooting at 100 yds, but using American Eagles (I'm a cheapo).

Well, I did indeed put a down payment on the FNAR and Trijicon scope with bipod, but after seeing a youtube video of disassembly, I'm going to have to pick something else out...

The gun is incredibly complex to disassemble even though the actual firing mechanism is rather simple. There are no QD parts. Everything requires a screw driver, non push pins, etc. This is unacceptable to me. I know guns don't have to be as simple as AR's to field strip, but for me, they DO have to be field-strip-able.

This is not.

So, the Accupoint 3-9x40 and Harris Bipod are fine, but I think I need to start looking at other options for the gun itself. Probably a Remington 700, Savage .308 BA, or possibly a Rock River AR in .308 if they're accurate enough...

:-/

A bit late to the party here, but I also recommend the Remington 700. It is a blank canvas, and customising options are endless. You can tailor your rifle to your precise needs, or as many do, just leave it as it comes straight out of the box.

A fine rifle that should last many, many years.

Great looking FN AR! The Accupoint scope is on my short list...

The .308 Winchester is one of my favorite calibers. It is a little overkill for house clearing, but from urban worst-case scenarios to hunting ranges that extend out to 300 plus yards to potential accuracy out to 1000 yards is just amazing versatility. Granted, the platform and trigger-puller really make the difference, but it’s definitely my favorite hunting round for deer. It’s probably a little on the short side for larger black bear and moose, but I’ve seen a few elk go down from a well placed .308.

I really think 16” is a waste for .308. It just doesn’t give you the potential for performance. I think 18” is the minimum and you could go out to 26”, but that too I think is beyond most practical uses. For the best balance between handiness, accuracy and squeezing out the most velocity, I would keep it between 18 to 22 inches.

Weight can be an issue if you plan to carry it for hunting or that “worst-case” scenario. If you’re driving right up to your deer stand, you probably don’t have to worry, but if you’re hiking the canyons prevalent in some hunting areas of the west, you will be a little more concerned.

I have both FAL’s and an M1A Bush (set up as a Scout). I really like the 18” barrel length and accuracy is more than enough for hunting and even with a low-power IER scout scope, I was making man-sized silhouette hits out to 500 yards (hold over was quite a bit, but once dialed in, it was consistent hits which even surprised me).

For bolt guns, I just prefer Savage. I have a Model 10 FCM Scout and the newer Precision Carbine. I’m happy with both and impressed with the PC…it’s much more accurate than me.

My preference is the M1A Bush; it is on the heavy side, but it’s handy, accurate and reliable. Your FN AR looks handy for it's size as well and will be a great rifle. It can be used for hunting and serious “social” engagements with effective performance out to ranges well beyond typical combat ranges. I do love my AR’s and have one sitting by the bed, but the .308 is much more capable for a wider ranges of uses if you want a more serious ranch or hunting rifle. Congrats!

Hey man thanks for the thoughtful reply. Zeroed it in at 25 yards today at the indoor range. Put shot on top of shot repeatedly. Ready to go to the outdoor range once the snow clears.

The M1A Scout was my first choice, at which point in time I didn't know the FNAR existed. Saw it at the local gun shop and fell in love. Met all the criteria I was interested in. It's heavy, given the heavy barrel version and bipod, but It's easy to keep the gun on target. At 3x, I can engage close targets efficiently, and the 9x allows me to get an intimate view for medium range targets.

The Harris bipod kept coming loose and I'm wondering if it needs some loc-tite on the screw. Anyone else know what to do about this?

When I can, I will put a small red dot on the top rear scope ring for easy target acquisition at close ranges.

The idea was to create a two gun arsenal for all duties, using only NATO cartridges.

FNAR + Sig Pro 9mm (with CTC grips).

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in .308 with a SS 10x scope , haven't shot it out much past 300 but it is far more accurate than I am , but I am trying to catch up to it :)

You like the 10 power SS? Ive got a SS 16 on my Weatherby Vanguard 30,06 and man, that scope could drive nails.

Here are some options that are good to go.
semi Auto: Armalite AR10 T model or their SASS model, basically like the military M110 great for multiple targets and fast reloading
bolt: Steyr SSG PII with the 10X Hendsholdt scope good rifle
currently one of the best deals for the money is the Savage 10 BA, great trigger, super accurate
FN TSR 20" good for small package with great accuracy. And of coarse the good old Remington 700 PSS, but I really like the detachable mag option.
ps. Never liked M1As scoped, had one and sold it and got the Armalite SASS. much more stable scoping and bore to center of scope angle

using my Socom i can bang a steel gong at 300 yds using factory sights and junk ammo with no problem... all day long. ive owned/own many rifle/carbines and i absolutely love that little beast and will never sell it. the fun factor is 10 outta 10, and it truly is capable of being a jack-of-all trades.

Great to see you like the Scout. I love Steyr and I love the Aug and Scout. I'll definitely be looking around for one. I'm only gonna buy from a local shop though. When it comes to guns I like to support the local shops!

A Scout in .308 would be a dream.

I agree with supporting your local "brick and mortar" shops but, when I get get a brand new Steyr AUG for $1500 and 10 extra factory hi-cap mags for $200, I'll gladly pay the local transfer fee and patronize them with something else down the road.
