Right now, I think VG-10 is the best all around steel from Spyderco.

I think for the money, you just can't beat VG-10. I am always surprised that pepople complain about it. To me, S30-V is fine but I don't want to pay a lot more for it. I will pay a little more but not more than 10% more. I think Spyderco makes some of the best VG-10 and I like it.

I preferre VG-10 over any stainless on folders based on my experiences with edge retention, ease of sharpening, and proper steel behaviour (chipping, denting, etc.). It has the best balance, in my opinion. BG-42 has given a similar experience, and I like it very much, as well.

J-lotsofnumbers hit my thoughts exactly. Vg-10 takes a great edge easily and lasts and isn't so brittle it chips out easily. I also agree that these very same properties are what makes BG-42 so great too.

I also like the slightly wavy pattern the finished VG-10 blades seem to have.

I also really like VG-10, but I haven't heard/read many complaints about it.

I see a lot of whiners complaining when a new Spyderco comes out in VG10 instead of S30V. I have had many iffy experiences with S30V, compared to nothing but solid, consistent satisfaction with VG10.

I haven't got much experience with stainless, because after buying a couple of Bucks thirty years ago with 440c, I decided, coupled with a personal preferance for the traditional, if not old-timey, that only good high carbon would do. I have owned LOTS of knives since, including Randalls and other hand made knives. Have also always preferred forged blades.

Anyhow, I recently decided I needed an Endura 4. This steel is fantastic. If I could buy an Endura with stag scales and 1095 forged, I would. Untill that comes out,:D, I will be very happy with VG-10 and am happy to see the evolution that stainless has undergone whilst I was stuck in the 19th century.

Great stuff.

I've had very good experiences with Spyderco's S30V. My Military, ParaMilitary and Manix all perform flawlessly. I have also had very good experiences with the S30V from other manufacturers.

My VG-10 experiences have not been nearly as good. The edge of my Endura4 will chip or deform quite readily, and hasn't shown very good wear resistance either. My Delica4 has exhibited the same qualities, but to a smaller extent. To tell you the truth, I can't quite understand why there is so much praise for VG-10. The steel is the only reason why I haven't yet purchased a Caly3.

I myself am not a huge fan of S30V. It a great steal and all, but VG-10 has definitely stood the test of time. I do prefer ZDP-189 over S30V, I admit.

I have never had a problem w/ any of my VG-10s, Still use them often.
Now I am carrying a Delica 4 (ZDP) and I am really impressed.

So Many steals, so few pockets for EDC!!!!!!!

I really like vg-10, with H1 right behind it.

I like s30v too, but vg-10 does seem like it's a bit easier to sharpen, and takes a more predictable edge than s30v.

From my experience all spyderco steels are great. I must say though, that I used to care more for s30v but for edc, VG10 is more "user friendly". Zdp is a great steel, but my delica zdp is my only spyderco that show some rust on it, not too bad, but than I don’t like rust too much.....
Be well Arnon :)

I like ZDP, but I also realize that VG10 is almost an industry standard. It's what new steels compared to. Do they sharpen as easy as VG10? Hold an edge as long? etc., etc.

It really is a good all around steel. It was my favorite untill ZDP came along. I don't see ZDP replacing VG10 at the position VG10 is in around the knife world. Production anyway. Custom makers still can't get it here. Joe

For real world EDC use, I have had much better results with VG-10 over S30V. I'd like to try out BG-42 though.

Buzz,

You should check out the UK Pen Knife! It's pretty much identical to a Caly III (minus the lock of course, but it does have a strong back-spring), only with S30V as the blade steel. I don't think I'd try anything with the Caly III that I wouldn't with the UKPK, as the Caly III's lock isn't what I'd consider "hard use" by any means. If you like the Caly III design, and would rather have S30V for the blade steel, you owe it to yourself to check it (UKPK) out.;)

Yes, I fully agree. I think for the average user a blade in VG-10 with good treatment does more than satisfactory. I understand that the trend is to bring new steels on the market (after all, many of us are steel snobs), but my trusty EDC(s) for the last years were all in VG-10.
