Right now, I think VG-10 is the best all around steel from Spyderco.

Ive not had any experiences with VG-10 just yet, but I know other models of knives that use S30V and are renowned for being the best folder blade material... I expect its also down to preference, but I like the edge holding I've heard about on S30V, I'll have to play around with a VG-10 blade and see what its all about... oh dear, have to buy another knife... ;)

I've had very good experiences with Spyderco's S30V. My Military, ParaMilitary and Manix all perform flawlessly. I have also had very good experiences with the S30V from other manufacturers.

My VG-10 experiences have not been nearly as good. The edge of my Endura4 will chip or deform quite readily, and hasn't shown very good wear resistance either. My Delica4 has exhibited the same qualities, but to a smaller extent. To tell you the truth, I can't quite understand why there is so much praise for VG-10. The steel is the only reason why I haven't yet purchased a Caly3.

These are interesting observations. I wonder if you have a bad heat treat. Most of my S30V experience has been bad, but not the chipping that others describe. My S30V knives tend to not hold an edge at all, and don't sharpen up very well. I haven't had any chipping problems with it. Most of my S30V knives are also not Spyderco's, either. My Manix holds the best edge (stock, unmodified), of all my S30V knives.

I have found VG 10 to be almost equivalent in edge holding to Carbon V, or 0170-whatever Camillus calls it/Case CV. I find that to be quite good, and I've been quite happy with it. Would you like me to send you a Caly 3? You're welcome to try it out for a while and see if it does better for you, no strings.

I'll keep that in mind, but let me take a simpler approach first. I think I'll buy another Delica4, and dedicate it to some serious testing. I'll test it against my Endura4, and a comparable S30v knife, and see how it all shakes out. I'd hate to borrow your Caly3, test it out, and end up grinding 1/8" off the blade. Delicas are dirt cheap for testing fodder.

I think you should take the guy up on the offer, if not just to experience the design. That knife is truly incredible.

I have had great experiences with Spyderco's VG-10, S30V, and H-1.

I'm not sure that VG-10 is the BEST all around Spyderco steel, I'm really enjoying the H-1 more and more.
It's a breeze to sharpen and it gets extremely sharp, and it holds the edge for a reasonable amount of work.
Combine that with the fact that it does not rust and you have an excellent all around knife steel.
However, It does scratch very easily--but that shows that you actually use your knife.

I absolutely love the design of the Paramilitary - but I've traded 2 away because I couldn't get them sharp easily, and then they'd chip.

So, I now EDC the same thing I did when I got my first Spyderco (which was a Delica 3) -- now, a Delica 4. Just wish it had a finger choil :(
