Right tool for the job?

Quite a bit from their machete line would work better. The gladius machete in particular would work in very close quarters when there isn't enough room to swing.

I don't have one, because I have multiple fixed blades that serve my needs better, but it's always good to have knives like this available. I always try to keep in mind that there are folks who don't have the discretionary income I, or others have, yet still need a stout fixed blade. It's good that these are available. I don't have one, as I said, but I HAVE messed around with one that a friend of mine owns. We beat on it in the woods behind his house and it held up pretty well. For the price, it's a great deal for what you get.

Baseball bat, Kitchen Knife, or Wasp spray (lazy man's pepper spray).
are all better than rummaging to find your special knife.

I can think of many worse options. Never really thought about the GI Tanto for home defense, but sure . . . why not?

I live in Pennsylvania, so for "in house, scum bag defense", one of these in the night stand does much better down the hallway.

A knife is just a bad weapon to fight with in general. You have to get really close to do damage, and unless you have decent training you'll probably have it taken away from you or knocked out of your hand and used against you.

I prefer my baby aluminium baseball bat. If I could keep a handgun in the house, I'd rather that as well.

Handgun is better. Knife would be close to the last tool id reach for in home defense. Id rather have a long sharpened stick. Seriously. Works better than any knife at keeping aggressive animals away from me...same applies to people. Too each their own.

That's a true story... Without training a knife is not that easy a fighting weapon. I actually keep a small wooden bat/club next to my bed as well which I prefer over a knife in a close combat situation. The one time I thought I heard something in the house in the middle of the night I actually gave the .38 to my wife and I took the bat to look around.

Truth be told, a lot of my self defense know how requires hand usage, tosses, grabs, holds, open hand stuff, so a knife doesn't do a lot of help in those self defense scenarios where I would have to rely on my training/instinct... Knife is certainly not my first choice in a fight, but to each their own.

Personally I think a good (no holds barred, aggressive) self defense class would do you much more good in defending yourself and family (they could benefit to) then a knife, but I understand you have to work within your means... Just definitely learn some good solid even basic knife fighting techniques if you think you'll ever have to use your knife for self defense.

. But in reality, a scary tacticool knife like the GI tanto would make most moron junkies flee like school girls confronted with a handful of worms lol.

That is also a true story... Most people "looking for a fight" decide they don't really want one when they think/realize that you're not afraid and willing to fight back (with a blade no less). But Its the not most people that you have to still worry about though. The one you pull a knife on, then they square up good, pull one out too, and smile, cold as ice in their eyes... You gotta ask yourself, are you ready if that situation comes up?

Knife, Pool Cue, CZ75 with Black Talons ?? ........ I'll choose the CZ every time......

Those 0777s are very handsome.

I never liked the GI Tanto. I feel like a better design with better ergonomics can be had for not a significant amount more money.

As for home defense purposes, definitely not.

Samon,

I think you SHOULD buy it, modify it to your taste, and feel a warm glow knowing you have a very handy cutter, a wicked weapon, and a potential self-defense tool (though you are in the UK, so shouldn't it be "defence"?). I also think you should get involved with your local HEMA organization for knife and sword skills. Finally, I think you should pick up a sporting stick tool that would look appropriate in a UK home: Cricket bat, golf club, even a hurly stick (camán, if you like). I imagine Crown prosecutors can be as fickle as our district attorneys and if one feels you've carried a designated weapon to a fight, whether in your home or not, you could face the accusation you went looking to kill someone. Otherwise, why would you have the weapon? It's an easier argument that you grabbed piece of sporting equipment that you had handy fend off an intruder.

As for weapons, I'm a fan of distance, though I've done plenty of close-in knife practice. You might very well get into singlestick at your local HEMA meets, and that's a pretty stout self-defense tool. Mine are made of hickory with leather basket hilts and I can tell you they hurt when they connect. I've had the welts to prove it. And as that's a sport with a long English history as well as a recognized martial art, well, no one can say you were looking to stab intruders with a weapon.

My wife's weiner dog would be my first line of defense, while my boxer hid under the bed, then of course my 12 Guage down the hall since the kids are grown up,and moved out, then all I gotta do is mop up blood and patch sheetrock, but I'm in housing maintenance so I'm good to go their.
