RIP Frank Niro

Wow frank, what a great guy and knifemaker he will be sadly missed. My prayers are with all his friends and family. This just goes to show that we need to be thankful for every day we have on this fine earth. Cherish the time we have with our friends and family. I think people, my self included just take every day for granted. We wake up and go about our day not even considering that we might not wake up tomarow. RIP frank, your memory will not be forgotten.

Man, I'm very sad to hear this.

Frank and I had become pretty good long distance buddies, he would call me and we'd chat for a couple hours at a time about working with exotic materials. In fact, last year he sent me some really nice mammoth tooth, and a set of various cutters he uses to work with it, because I admitted to him I'd never tried using tooth. He was well known for it, and had figured out how to get great results.

I had hoped to get a knife from him before he died.. =\

I guess I better get around to making a knife with that material.

I have a box of mammoth tooth scales with frank and his address ready to ship. What a nice man.....

This is the knife Frank just recently finished and sent to me. I Know how much Frank has given of himself over the many years just as everyone else here seems to acknowledge here as well. Last summer I did up a small care package of knife supplies for Frank as a thanks for all the help he gives to other makers. I sent him some fossil Damascus I made, mammoth tusk ivory and a bunch of other misc knife supplies as a thank you. A couple weeks after Christmas I got home from work and my wife says I received a letter from Frank. I read it and it was Frank explaining that he was sending me back the knife supplies I sent him. I never realized it was actually in the form of this liner lock folder until my wife showed me the knife. He made it with the materials I had sent him. He made it very clear that this was not a birthday or Christmas gift. LOL. This is not the only Frank Niro knife I own but will be the most cherished knife from Frank.
I called Frank to thank him so much and that is not what I was after when I sent him the materials. He told me to never mind and enjoy the knife. That I will do. He told me he was starting to feel better and thought he may be able to get back out in shop again soon.
Rest in peace Frank.
Jim

Sorry for poor picture.

I've got one set of tooth, two of ivory, and two of mammoth bone left that Frank had given me when I went to visit him. I'm going to be saving those for some special projects. Truly the most wonderful person I ever got to know. I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend a day in the shop with him.

Just damn sad! Frank was very helpful to me on many occasions, and always a great contributor here on the forum. Rest in great peace Frank, you will be sorely missed.

Prayers for you family--Love and Light!

Wow. I'm saddened to hear this! In the years that I've been part of various knife making forums, there has been a handful of makers/contributors that always stuck out to me, whether it was their work, their number of posts, but most of all their willingness to be part of a discussion and be as helpful as they could to the community. Frank Niro is certainly at the top of that list of makers who stood out to me.

Rest well Frank. My condolences to his family.

This is very sad... I'll miss Frank, he was an encouraging and knowledgeable presence to upcoming makers, myself included. He made some very beautiful knives that I've seen over the years... I had meant to visit him before long, as he lived not all that far from me as far as Western makers go. I wish I'd gone and done it already... RIP Frank, you were a good soul.

This is Frank's daughter typing this note. I just want to say what a wonderful group of human beings on this site. He truly enjoyed the friendships he made here. When he couldn't get out to the shop he was on the computer. And that always gave him more inspiration. Our hearts are bursting with the comments on here and want to say thank you.

RIP Frank.
Frank started giving me much appreciated advice 10 or more years ago. He was a pleasure to visit with on the phone and always a gentleman. He was a valuable contributor to the community and he will be missed.
