RIP Medford Praetorian

You didn't read all the posts. See post 17.
My bad, missed the sentence. Watched the video that was posted on #17 but thought that was just his workshop carry he keeps in his office. Sounds like he still doesn't collect, just a one knife man. Thanks!

If I had a bunch more money, I'd grab one of the Mini Praetorians. Kind of a fun looking overbuilt small knife.

Of course, if I had a bunch more money there are many things I'd be buying...🤔

The Praetorian Slim is fantastic. A similar size to my Bugout 535BK-4, but definitely an overbuilt feel. Aluminum vs Titanium difference.

The pivot on my Bugout needs adjustment after being opened every 150 times-or so.

The Praetorian Slim might need some adjustment after being run over by a tank.
Might.

Yeah, that looked kind of tempting too.
Add it to the list of things to get when I win the lottery. :D

My genesis is the only knife that I own that has displayed severe lock stick and a few other less than great frame lock symptoms.

I'm forced to hold the blade and flick the handles to get a decent open and lock up. That heavy blade allows the lock to over travel if flicked normally, with any authority. Picked it up second hand, I'm not sure if it needs work or if that's just the way it is.

Any which way. I do like it, and will investigate further, but an unnecessarily heavy blade causing unnecessary lock issues, on a so-so cutter. Isn't exactly floating my boat thus far.

A slim flipper model will probably be a way better fit for me.

Is it just lock stick? Have you tried the graphite trick? That seems to work to break in any Ti on steel locks if stick is an issue.

Just to be clear, this is most likely just something that I haven't encountered yet. Not necessarily a failure of the knife or a reflection of Medford quality in general. Like I mentioned it's a user that I bought secondhand and is an older model.

I'm going to really let my dummy on the subject hang out with this awful description, but here goes. lol

So it locks up real tight, right about 55%, with zero play, when thumb rolled or opened relatively softly. But if I throw some wrist flick in and that big ol blade swings open really hard. It feels like it over travels to about a 65% lock up. Then it's stuck and though I can feel no actual movement, I have to bounce the blade, spine to edge, to get it to creep back enough to release. Each time it bounces back a little towards the unlocked position, it sticks real tight again.

What stumps me is that there is no play at all that would lead me to believe that the weight of the blade could possibly allow it to travel past the 55%. Lugs are completely seated and tight as can be in the tops of the handles. Considered a worn out lock face but don't imagine it would lock fairly short at 55% if that was the case. Perhaps some flexing in the thinner handles. Or, something not aligning correctly where the face makes contact.

When I have some time, I plan to learn and try some fixes.

'Second hand'

'dummy'

The words that you used that popped out the most. 'Second hand' means used and not used properly. 'dummy'. Not you, the previous owner(s).

You have a 'lemon'.

Greg's warranty is quite strict. Greg's customer service is outstanding. They would gladly take your knife in and try to restore it.

Not sure how much it would cost you...

'Lemons' are a bit bitter.

I'm confident the previous owner never tried to open it with enough force to experience it. Real straight shooter, nothing but the best to say about him.

Roger on the support, that may well be the way it shakes out. Either way, I'll learn from it, and that bitter will be oh so sweet. :)

I don't really understand these overbuilt folders with locks not built for hard use . ⚓

I see the Cold Steel 4 Max Scout on sale for $40 . Excellent hard use folder .

Heck , even the new 5 Max is way cheaper than any Medford . And way , way better IMO .

Chris Reeve pioneered the Frame-Lock. CRK's are outstanding! To which lock are you referring to?

Greg has interviewed so many knife maker's at Bladeshows. It's on YouTube. Please watch Greg's interview with CRK..

and the folks from Microtech, Spartan et al

Interesting

I'm not sure if I have ever witnessed so much abuse, misuse and neglect of any kind of ownership before.

No bushcraft, hunting or fishing involved.

Definitely no EDC variables.

Do you use a knife this way?

Why?

Seatbelts should be tested, as should all products. Parameters and situations a consumer might face are the most logical and observable.

JoeX, though honest, may be the exception to all the rules.

Again, Interesting.
