Rise in Coyote Attacks on Toddlers

A lot more attacks than the media will admit. There have been adults attacked in SD county. Mostly small women and elderly but it dose happen.
Very frustrating to deal with the PETA nuts here. My wife has a Dog grooming business. We really like Dogs. But were constantly meeting people that feed coyotes and then are surprised when there family pet or child is attacked.

I have some on my property. 2 less than last year though.
I have also taught my 6 and 3 year olds how to stay safe while out and about, but they are under a watchful eye as well.

It's because people are just outright ignorant!

They don't respect wild animals as animals. They build over there habitat, feed them, get too close to them, and they wonder why they have problems. Then they blame the animals! It's your fault you dumb azz, learn to live with them, and respect them instead of just eradicating whatever animal/plant that happens to inconvenience you.

How about we quit trying to protect people, and let the ignorant kill each other and themselves off? Too many stupid people are living longer, breeding more and infecting the gene pool. The problem is not too many coyotes, the problem is too many people.

I say we go back to steel dashboards in cars, no air bags and no seat belts, if you crash you die. Maybe then people will learn to drive, and the bad drivers will be off the road...

**rant off**

P.S. I got no problem with shoot'n some coyotes, my rant is more of a general one. I'm all for some coyote target practice, but for crying out loud, use some common sense and don't let them eat your kids...

That was a pretty stupid-ass rant. The logic isnt quite right. Say you're driving along, minding your own business when someone pulls out in front of you. Given your plan, you would be dead. Does that sound like a good idea? No.

Shoot them ALL!! End of Thread.

Yep- and get overrun by rodents! I have lived beside coyotes all my life and have absolutely no problem with them. At least if you shoot them do something constructive with the bodies. It sickens me to see dead coyotes decomposing beside the road where they were shot.

Yet another polarizing issue!

Here is my input for now.
I don't have the numbers, but I bet more people are killed by domestic dogs than coyotes.
Feeding coyotes is asking for trouble.
For the most part it is people who are moving into the coyotes territory, not the opposite.
Advocating killing of all coyotes is asinine and irresponsible.

People and pets that are being attacked HERE are being attacked in there homes, in there yards, and in parks. These are city Born coyotes that have no fear of humans.
There dose seam to be an abundance of people who have less than desirable genetic traits that are being passed on. However it is not currently legal for me to remove these people from the gene pool. It is legal for me to defend my property and family from an animal that will come in to my house and attack my family and pets. On a note of interest I have found coyotes to be an excellent test media for Glaser safety slugs from a .44 mag.

The area that we live in used to be a very large fox farm. When they closed down 50 years ago they released at least some of the foxes rather than kill them. We have lots of foxes and they take a significant toll on small pets, but people figure that's what happens when you live next to Fox Run Park. For the first time in the 15 years I been here coyotes have started to move in. We have not moved into their native range, they have been displaced from elsewhere or ran out of food elsewhere. They have been attacking the foxes and some medium-sized dogs. One of these suckers is likely to have an "accident" if it hops my back fence. At least we don't have bears this year.

I think you are taking him to literally.
:D

idk really anything about coyotes honestly...
obviously if people feed them and some get to used to humans (from idiots feeding them or something) or is a problem somehow you should probably take care of it.
:D
(I guess shooting them for sport isn't bad either... but they do keep some rodents away so I guess you don't want to effect the population too much)

thats about all I know...
:D

Sounds good to me. The logic is perfectly sound, "Say you're driving along, minding your own business..." those are exactly the people I'm talking about, you should never be minding your own business when you are driving, you should be aware of everything that is going on around you and were you plan to be within the next few seconds.

If I'm stupid enough to not pay attention while I'm driving, then yes, I should be dead. I don't have a problem with that, it's my fault I'm dead.

Also, don't get me wrong, I have no problem taking out anything that would be a threat to me or my family, but I'm also not going to encourage anyone or anything to become a future threat. (i.e. feeding wild animals, etc.)

People don't need to feed coyotes for them to become less wary of people. They're perfectly capable of making a good living off the trash and pets of humans, without us taking any special effort to make them comfortable. Add to that the sprawling development in areas which used to be wild, and it's easy to see how they can become quite bold.

Coyotes are becoming more and more common around here, there are a bunch living in the bushes in the park about 100 feet from an elementary school. (I know this because I often see their feces, tracks and dead rabits.) They have killed a few cats and small dogs, but I didn't really know how many there were until a few months ago. My dog who used to stay outdoors in summer (you couldn't get him to come inside at all) started barking alot at about 2 in the night, I opened a window to tell him to shutup and he stopped. He started barking again and I shut him up again. This went on about 4-5 times until I wen't outside to see what the matter was. I couldn't see anything at first but then I noticed alot of shadows moving around and recognized the shape, there were about 8-9 coyotes slinking around everwhere, there were some just outside the fence, some walking on the fence, a couple on the raised porch in my backyard (my dog can't get up there, I don't know how the coyotes did,) it was pretty creepy, My lab's bark was really deep and loud but they weren't even slightly scared I turned on the outside lights and they scuttled, that was the end of that. If you wake up early in the morning you see them sometimes and you find tons of dead rats and rabbits everywhere.

I've heard of them having a female show herself to a male domestic dog, in an apparent effort to lure him out among the desert scrub, where the rest of the coyote pack was waiting. If your dog was being approached by 8 or 9 coyotes, I'd say you saved his life that night.

I agree with you that paying attention while driving is a good thing. But, defensive driving or not, you can't know when an accident is going to happen. If you've ever been in one, they come on pretty quick (i.e. someone being a dumbass and pulling out in front of you.) You have no control over that situation, and you can't predict when it's going to happen. If you can, then you don't need to be sitting at the computer right now... you should be out buying lottery tickets. :D

All jokes aside, I see your point. But, I'm sure you can see mine, as well. I'm not advocating feeding coyotes. But, I certainly dont see anything wrong with people killing them, if they do not want them on their property.

I have heard this too and also males being playfull with dogs luring them away from the house and then the pack attacks them. We have a fenced in yard and I've come outside to see a coyote staring through the fence at my dog and him staring back. I have a big dog, so they don't bother him.

I wouldn't trust so much to fate. We had a thread here a while back (could've been in PracTac) where a story was relayed about how coyotes can take on German Shephards. They'll just go one or two at a time until the big dog is warn out then all go in for the kill.

As far as coyotes are concerned, I can't understand why you would want to shoot them. Unless they're actively preparing to attack you or someone you should protect, why kill them? They're just living their lives and in that sense really aren't any different from you or me. I can understand exceptions if your livelihood were at stake or if you're situation somehow made it so that you couldn't watch your kids or pets outdoors, but why should the majority of us go around killing them off? I understand hunters who eat their kill, but sport or trophy hunting has always made me angry. Why not live and let live?

I live in Idaho and there are a lot of coyotes where I live. We don't try to kill them all, but we do keep hunting pressure on them and I have never heard of one ever full out attacking a human. I have ran across them in the wild and I can say they run like they are on fire. So obviously the ones in California are used to humans and have decided small humans would be tasty. I don't blame them, they are natural predators and will take easy prey no matter what it is. They don't have emotions like we do and killing is part of life for them. But if they are having that much of a problem they need to thin them out a bit and let them know humans are above them on the food chain. Then they will be afraid of humans again. Its pretty common sense in my mind.
