Rise of the Blingblades

I feel the same way when I'm passed by a 2015 Corvette, General Motors BE DAMNED!!!!!!

Not really...

If by "cheap" you mean well made knives with utilitarian materials selling at a reasonable price like most Spyderco models then yes j-boy, I wish Spyderco would cater only to "cheap" people.

I think you should stick with Cold Steel. Spyderco makes a wide variety of knives to fit pretty much any taste, if you can not find one that fits your needs you are the problem not the company.

Personally , I'm very excited for the new fancier Spydercos that are on the way. That Tighe Stick looks beautiful.

I'm happy to have them all. I'm a daily user, I use the heck out of my Endura's, Delica, Pm2, manbug but a part of me "collects" the nicer BBQ knives like sprint runs, lionspy and hopefully a Rubicon someday. I like them all..

I have a true EDC knife rotation but there are other knives I like for the eye candy that they are. I collect some knives that I never intend to use. Does it mean I have to much discretionary cash and I should use it to help feed the hungry? Probably. But sometimes I like shiny things.

Your money, do with it what makes you happy. Anyway, I 100% agree, I love my users and my lookers. Doesn't make me a D Bag!

Well actually johnboy I have absolutely no problem finding Spydercos that fit my needs. The following is a short list of some Spyderco folders I own in random order; Police 3, Ulize, Military, Civilian, Persian, Szabo, Tanaka, Chinook. I also have quite a few Spyderco fixed blades. If Spyderco ever brings out the Mamba and TigheStick in more manly versions I'd certainly add them to my already considerable Spyderco collection. Your suggestion I stick with Cold Steel is obviously ment as a putdown. Perhaps you're unaware that CS now brings out virtually all their knives in more expensive steels. That must raise that company's status in your ,and all the other blingboys, eyes.

I am a steel junkie, and a user rather than a collector. Apart from admiring the manufacturing excellence over the internet, I do not have an interest in any of these bling blades... Even if I was a collector, they would be too expensive to import.

These aren't my taste either, as I prefer all the in-house designs, and their function-over-form philosophy, but that's the glory of the collaborations, isn't it - the real variety of design.

As consumers (of anything) choices can't possibly be a negative thing. Nobody is forcing a sale and as everyone has mentioned there are options within the Spyderco line and other brands for marketplace competition. If it doesn't sell well, Spyderco will have added marketplace data points on these "bling" knives. Same is true if sales go through the roof. Seems to me luxury car brands (BMW, Benz, Porsche) make entry models (that may still be "expensive") up to ultra luxury bling models.

I'm looking forward to the Nirvana and the Positron alike. The thing is, I don't need either one but will most likely buy them both and likely stay away from the Mamba and Tighe Stick for reasons unrelated to cost. We all have limitations and a line in the sand on what is too much, from pocket knife to car. Affordability doesn't equal class in either direction.

And there are posts out there complaining that the Positron only has steel liners and only has boring old S30V. Can't please everyone.

...and I don't know about you, but I'm the one who supplies the "manly" to the objects I hold.

Free-market economics rock. Larry can cry about knives he doesn't like, and other people can buy and enjoy them. Win-win!

To each his own. My reaction to most of the new offerings was a financial sigh of relief that I did not feel compelled to acquire any other than some HAP40 offerings and the PM2 S110V. I'm happy that others are attracted to the models that I am not because I want very much for Spyderco to continue to be successful. If some of those new models appeal to mid-tech toting hipsters in $200 skinny jeans wearing a wristwatch the size of my first alarm clock then more power to them and I welcome them to the Spyderco brotherhood.

I love what Spyderco is doing.

First no popular custom knifemaker could ever produce as many knives as customers want. It's supply and demand, there is a limit to how many knives one person can custom make per week, month, year etc. As such when a knifemaker has excess orders, he raises his prices, or doesn't and people make loads of cash flipping his knives on the open market. (Like Hinderer and others.)

I love my Techno. It is an Awesome knife. I don't know the number sold or produced, but Marcin Slysz couldn't have custom made that many personally in his lifetime. Spyderco has provided me and countless others an opportunity to have what is as close to a custom Marcin Slysz knife as possible for alot less money. Thank you.

I love that Spyderco is willing to take chances on different designs, not everyone has the same tastes.

Then why are you complaining? Are you one of those people that thinks others should only like what you like and nothing else?

I suggested Cold Steel because you mentioned them in your first post. I do not care what brand of knife others like, if they are happy I am happy for them.

It amazes me that people spend their time typing these comments.

If someone wants to spend $100 or $1000 on a knife- good luck to them. If they want to use it and wear it down to the hilt or lock it up in a safe- good luck to them again.

I think we just should all be happy that Spyderco make such a wide range of knives in steels and materials that everyone can find one that they like

This is, perhaps, the best observation behind what's going on. Most (if not all) of Spyderco's high-end knives (or, to use the OP's vernacular, blingblades) are collaborations with custom designers that remain as true as possible to the original custom. Enabling the masses to own high-end, custom-quality (sometimes better) customs is an awesome service for Spyderco to offer.

If the OP has a beef with the materials in blingblades, it should be aimed at custom makers, not Spyderco.

Most of Spyderco's own designs and builds are utilitarian, simple, effective, and affordable. I appreciate that. They cover a huge range of offerings, and do so with an intentionality and attitude that has, and continues to, impress me.

Even the bra you like to wear when you're alone?
