Rit Dye G10 help!

Do you have two? If so, nice!

Yeah the tone of the original piece is going to influence the shade that you get with whatever dye you go with. As I mentioned I used Rit Kelly Green which is a rather light, pale green. The results are obvious from the pic. I recommend going one or more shades lighter than your intended results with this color g10. You can always go darker.

Twink, I like the results a lot. I'm curious, did the overtravel stop come out okay? Mine went darker a little faster than the scale, presumably because of it's relative thickness. I should have mentioned that. Either way it just meant leaving the scale in the bath a little longer to even it up.

Also, as I said, I've never tried it, but I've heard that the remover will restore the old color if we ever get tired of our new ones. Otoh I have some reservations about whether or not that's true, or if it is that it will go back to the exact original shade, and barring that, cause no damage. I need to find a scrap piece of g10 to try that on.

Good job!

Thanks! I love the Southard so much that I ended up getting two, but I had traded one away recently for a large Sebbie. I really like the result, and I think if it's lighter then it may not look as clean.

Definitely let me know how the dye remover turns out. I hate how all my other G10's are black, so no room to play.

Your Southards looked so good that it inspired me to change the color on mine as well. After reading this thread several times I went out to Walmart today and bought some Rit Dye.

3 cups of water
1/2 bottle of Rit Dye (Wine)
2 tablespoons of vinegar

I simmered the bar stop for 75 minutes and the scale for 90 minutes

I really like how it came out as it is a rich deep burgundy. I hope my first attempt at including photos works. Sorry if they seem a little dark but its as close as I could get to the actual color. When I would play with light or settings the photos had much more red than the real thing. Thanks for this thread!

The knive in this tread look great! Have any of you guys had the dye bleed out of the scales?

Never, not in g10, Delrin or FRN. I had an Endura with white FRN that I dyed orange and it didn't bleed or fade after oh... 5 years? Something like that... whenever the sprint white Spydercos came out.

Thanks Strigamort, I would hate to ruin my nice Dockers! :D Jk nice? Dockers ? haha
Twinkie, from the pic it looks like you shrunk your Southard when you put it in the hot water:D

Reading this thread I followed Togan's instructions exactly, and the knife came out great. IMO My other mods were changing to tip down carry, acid etching and stone washing the clip before I moved it. This knife, for me, is just about perfect unless I find something else to do to it.

Does the rit dye remover work on G10? I'm interested in possibly doing this with my forthcoming SnG (coyote brown isn't my favorite color) but I'm not sure if it's worth risking the warranty.

This is my first time using RIT on knife scales. I don't know how well the remover works. Hope another can answer for you.

I'm working on getting an answer. I don't have any g10 that isn't black atm, but I'm going to try it on other plastics to get an idea of if I want to buy some to test or not.

Just wanted to refresh this and see if anyone has confirmed whether or not the color remover will work. I dyed my Echelon the dark blue and it went almost black. it is still a bit translucent, but I think the "natural" G10 calls for a shorter soak.
