RJ Martin 0609. Yes, I'm insane. But how crazy am I?

Personally I wouldn't be to concerned about it if I planned on using the knife (judging by the pictures)
But wouldn't it be nice to have a "Collectors Series" on knives? Every knife from the factory cant be absolutely perfect in this price range, but offering "perfect" versions for the safe queen collector would sure alleviate allot of headache...
Had a similar conversation with Mr. Medford the other day about pleasing the masses and producing a product that made everyone happy.. Its hard to do. He used the example of early lock up, some "knife nuts" prefer a supper early lockup of 5% while others like a 50% ...ect.

OP, I would exchange it for another 0609. That scuffed pivot is clearly abnormal.

Mine certainly doesn’t show such marks and actually is perfect. At first the detent was too strong, but now that’s broken in to be perfect as well, in my inexperienced hands with my first ZT.

Regarding the clip, it’s impressive how the clip rests on the scale but avoids contacting the lock bar at all. My only concern is that if I ever want to change to an aftermarket clip, I’m not sure the same will occur. On the other hand, I really like the stock clip and the way the knife carries. The clip end of the handle is tapered to be pretty thin, so not much of the handle is actually exposed.

My collection is heavily skewed towards ZT and I can attest that their quality is generally top notch. I have the regular and blk versions of that blade....both are nearly perfect. Definitely no markings on the pivot.

Your other option if KC is too much of a hassle is to work with the KAI warranty department....they have great customer service and should do right by you.

Sounds good everyone. I agree with another pocket clip not having the same perfect placement on the scale. Knife Krazy on YouTube shows a video of him switching out the scews and clips for bronze ano hardware. Clip looked really good but it did seem to be right on the lock bar. Time will tell and it may even be fun to have the original clip anodized.
I just may check out that vendor next time, appreciate the recommendation!
Yeah I've heard nothing but good things about ZT quality AND warranty service so that's another avenue not to forget. I'll have the stupid luxury of comparing two when it arrives but regardless the first one is going back and if there are any further issues I'm just going to deal with KAI.
And brandoak in a dream world if you paid extra for a certified perfect "select reserve" of a knife I would probably sign right up! ;)

I hope you dont think I was picking on you, I wasn't. There is no reason that you shouldn't have gotten a perfect knife. I was just thinking that if they had such a thing as the "collector edition" for each knife, everyone would be happy. I was not insinuating that you had to high of expectations at all.
Forgive me if I came off that way.

IMO only- I don't mind paying the restocking fee. Let's say it wasn't returned and "recycled", is it then KC's job to open every box, break open the bubble wrap, and make a judgment call about whether it's perfect enough? I don't expect them to do that.

Now that being said it is my personal preference to deal with bladehq or smaller still reputable vendors, but KC is one the few that has the 0609 in stock right now. As a bit of a perfectionist, to be allowed to return a knife because it didn't reach my personal standards is a fair trade for a 5% restocking fee.
And to repeat an embarrassing confession, I am so impatient I already ordered another one so it will have to be a return not an exchange unfortunately

That’s completely insane to me. So if you bought a knife from someone on the exchange, it wasn’t what was promised, and you wanted your money back. You wouldn’t mind paying them a restocking fee? KC can afford to send him another one.

OP Dude I’m telling you give me a call and I’ll call for you. I’m not saying jump down their throats I’m simply saying it’s either used or a manufacturer defect. Paying a restocking fee for a replacement is rediculous. The guy who said I don’t mind paying is some kind of pushover. I can’t relate no matter how hard I try. He probably doesn’t mind paying sticker price for a car either.

Haha no man I was quite serious about your idea. That would be awesome! Didn't feel that way at all

Ok while I still feel like it's not knifecenter's fault if zero tolerance had a defect out of the factory, I agree with you about the restocking fee and I'll give them a call tomorrow explain myself. Firm but gentle should do the trick.:)
Still in a worst-case scenario if I'm being excessively picky another time and I just can't help myself, I'll pay the fee to soothe my OCD.

Hey now, that was me and I went through a whole long song and dance at the dealership to get the price I wanted.:D

Update-
Received my second 0609 in the mail from knifecenter. Centering perfect (previous one 70/30, my revised estimate) and pivot, while still a bit scratched up, is well within tolerances for me compared to before! Pivot was reason for the swap.

Boon made a great point that once the tool comes out for the proprietary pivot, why not just polish up the pivots to my liking and then tackle the centering DIY style. Really take pride in it and such. Well what do you guys think is the margin for correcting centering on a ZT ball bearing framelock like this?
Anyway I received the new knife and bottom line I'm not upset no matter what guys! If you would allow me just let me share with you this "over grind" line on the blade. I really am not going to go through another return or exchange at the most maybe contact KAI.
But with using the blade over time (my plan) what does this really matter? Flip side of that though is the beautiful and precise machining and on the swedge, with the stone wash flats. They kind of contrast with that sharp line but anyway I'm probably just going to live with it. But as I hinted earlier it tempts me to just fix up the first one I have since that might arguably be easier than fixing something in a blade of 20 CV steel.
I just wanted to share.

Unacceptable. I swear KnifeCenter buys factory seconds!

That's a gorgeous knife and you shouldn't have to endure a blemish like that.

I admit it is frustrating. It does depend on the angle of light how pronounced the blemish is to be fair.
I don't really know what to do. I don't want to be putting any more knives in circulation other people are going to end up with.

Return both of them.
Eat the restock fee.
Never buy from KC ever again.
Buy a 609 from KnifeArt, where every knife is inspected before it goes out!

Delt with Knife Center for years, never any trouble with anything in any way shape or form. A few returns, just with a letter of explanation they handled it 100% every time.

Call them & ask for Josh.

Both are unacceptable imo. I just got a 609 from Amazon and the knife was flawless especially the pivot. I would send both back.

Btw the box being labeled a black dlc s35vn was a mistake at the factory I had called KAI and they had confirmed it.

Yeah that overgrind is horrific. This is a 240.00 knife; it needs to be perfect. I have 30.00 blades that look better. Those 3.00 knives in the fishbowls in hardware stores dont have overgrinds. Id have that in the mail so fast it wouldn't be funny

New knife I'm talking about.

But anyway, thank you everyone! I'll figure it out.

Damn man, sorry about your luck. I would call, ask them to put yourself in your shoes, send it back, and ask them to inspect one for you before they send it out. I’m so sorry man, that’s tragic.
