RMD LE vs. RMD

Hey guys, I was looking at picking up an RMD, and wasn't sure which model to get. I like the satin and G10, but I worry about rust and the price is an extra 40 bucks :/ Is it worth it? Will the RMD serve fine as an EDC/ camp knife with last ditch defensive applications? Please leave your opinions :)

i prefer coated RMD's myself but living on a coastline..... yea lol

yes RMD's work well at everything imo and are the only knife i have 2 of, if i ever needed it to defend myself i wouldnt feel under-armed in the slightest.

pull.………the………trigger!!!
Yes, worth it.
Yes, may succumb to surface rust if you use it and neglect basic maintenance.
EDC, might be. Depends on many factors, mostly where and how you decide to carry and use it.
Camp chores, heck yes.
Defensive, in the right hands, down right lethal. (Speculation, of course.)

I believe you answered your own question when you stated that you like satin and G10.
Now, the hard part will be getting in (if you haven't already) on the recent LE. If not, an e-mail to Eric saying you will take one that may be available due to a canceled order might be a good idea.

So there you have it, VOTF. Unless an RMD LE sale falls through, you were too late to pick one up from Eric before you even asked your question. And no Busse knife remains in stock forever. If you don't buy an RMD while Eric still has them, they'll eventually sell out, too.

Keep in mind that refusing to make a decision IS a decision.

Good luck.

The G10 handles alone is usually a $40 upgrade. To get satin on top of that is a bargain. Eric just posted that he will be reopening the preorder tomorrow night at 1900h EST with NO go button needed, so just be ready to kick an email off at 1900h tomorrow...
If you aren't happy with the LE you can always trade it or sell it and buy the CG... There will be enough people who didn't get in on the preorder that that shouldn't be a problem at all. Good luck!

I may just upgrade :) My only fear with the canvas is it will fray and take away from the looks over time. Not a HUGE deal but as a collector I like having a looker :P and Hey Thrill, nice colors you got there. ;)

Thanks, but what colors are you referring to?

Gators. Florida-born here.

Thanks; here are some good ones.

Not only are the G-10 handles more expensive, the cost involved to send a RMD CG and have it professionally done would put the cost well above what the RMD LE is being offered for, and why I jumped on it.:)

Hmmmm. IIRC, there was no difference in cost between the G10 and Micarta versions of the RMD when I purchased mine from the original run. But you're right . . . sending your RMD to the factory to have G10 handles installed on it would undoubtedly be more expensive than just buying an RMD LE.

Two things to keep in mind. G10 is heavier than Micarta and the RMD LE blade is thinner and lighter than the RMD CG blade. So the weight distribution on an RMD LE will be further to the rear than it is on the RMD CG. FYI, my satin-finished RMD weighs exactly 10.0 oz. I'd expect the factory version to weigh just about the same.

It was my impression that you couldn't send a Swamp Rat knife back to the shop for mods including handle swaps, only the Busse knives. Has anyone done this? Does anyone know someone that has done this? I don't.

Good question. And no, I don't know anyone who has sent a Swamp Rat knife back to the factory for mods. But that doesn't mean it hasn't happened nor does it mean that it might not be possible to send a Swamp Rat knife to Eric to have mods done. You'd have to discuss it with him, of course. But he's not the factory, you know. ;)

We do not offer the custom handles, etc, like Busse does. We just don't have the shop staff to run a custom shop full-time and keep up with regular production. The only time we offer any custom work are at the shows we attend and those are not customer requests, only a few pieces that the shop punches out prior to the show .

:D:D

Maybe if you send some booze and guns you could convince Garth to mod a Rat for ya...
;):D
Hey Thrill what is that 154CM drop point with the folders? Cool looking blade, the pig nose looking one next to it too in the lower pic...:D
