Road trip knives.

That's kind of the 800 pound gorilla in the room truth, isn't it? That in todays modern times, traveling by car across the country, not much knife is needed at all. In the past few years, we've travels from the east coast of the U.S. to the west coast and never needed more than a SAK classic to open plastic food packages. Interstate highways or state roads, didn't need to fight off any hostile injuns, skin any buffalo's, or blaze a trail through forest. In the past year I've driven from our new home in Texas back to Maryland to visit old friends and family, and driven to Mission Viejo in California to visit family. The most important tool on the road was the books on disk to listen to while cruising the interstate.

Can you get into Disneyland with even a SAK classic?
Do you give up your glock because you didn't have to use it?

Throwing some larger knives in the car and not using them doesn't hurt.
Being prepared is not the same as 'fighting injuns'...or other such nonsense.

I still keep a spare tire even though I haven't had to use one in years.

There is no over sized gorilla in the room.

I've had no problems at Disney California Adventure in 2015, or Lego land and SeaWorld last year, although I've heard that they beefed up security since the San Bernardino shooting in Dec 2015. If they ask me to junk it, that's fine. I paid like ten bucks for five of them on FleaBay. It's hardly instrumental for a vacation with my soon to be six year old.

I drove from Monterey CA to Ocala FL never even having a knife nor a need for one lol.

So you only own things you need? Didn't think so. This would be a very boring place if everyone only owned/carried knives they needed lol.

Because the itinerary sometimes changes and can end up taking me someplace with more restrictive knife laws than what I have here at home, I usually travel with a cheap SOG Salute and a Leatherman of some sort. The SOG is a lockback model, so no question about my "assisted" knife being mistaken for an auto or any such shenanigans.

Something like this for instance. I rarely need anything big outside work/home so I prefer something small and completely unnoticeable in the pocket. SwissChamp in bag just in case.

I don't know what Monterrey is like but to go to hot and humid Slo-cala seems like a downgrade. I'm right down the road so I'm very familiar. And with your user name I wouldn't think the conservative south would be as friendly as California.

I drove 24 hours basically non stop from FL to Rhode Island a few months ago and didn't really need a knife while driving but was glad to have one once we got there. I also swore I would never drive that long again without splitting it up into 2 days. Which lasted about a week and a half until I did it again driving home. Sometimes you just want to get where ever 'there' is.

I also conceal carry a firearm everywhere I go and it's as normal as wearing pants at this point. A trip to the NE is a pretty big eye opener about how oppressive some states are to what is supposed to be a freedom guaranteed by our constitution. It's pretty crappy to have to feel like a criminal because I'm not going to travel without a firearm and not be able to protect my 1 yr old daughter, wife, and myself.

Anyways, have a safe trip and hopefully it's for fun.

My last road trip was by air, to Key West . I mailed my Spyderco Pacific Salt to the resort and picked it up at check in . Just don't feel right without a sizable folder in my pocket .

I really didn't " need " it but I sure wanted it .

My last trip by car not once did I use my seatbelt for they're intended purpose , guess I wont wear them anymore .

jack,

Who made the stockman? Good looking knife!

It's a NorthWoods. I think Queen may have made them for Northwoods, but its nice whoever made it. The carbon blades hold a very keen edge for a good amount of time, but are easy to touch up on the bottom of a coffee mug. Handle scales are rosewood, and feel very nice in hand. Overall size is 4 inches closed, and fits in a pocket well due t the rounded bolsters. I really like having three blades to choose from.

Agreed on the Salt. Road trips and vacations often involve water for us so it is a natural fit for such a purpose. And seatbelts? Hardly ever used. Who needs them :D

Good looking knives. I just got my Pacific Salt in, so I can see what all the fuss is about with H1.

Went on a road trip last month. CA, NV, ID and back. Carried a Benchmade 551 Griptillian and a Gerber MP600 Scout multi-tool that had been modified with a different tool set. Both items were used and performed quite well. Also carried a Vic Spartan in with my shaving gear but never used it.

I've got the same one and gifted another to a buddy with a boat. Edge retention isn't great but it admittedly isn't used a lot, emergency backup for water outings. I much prefer the serrated h1.

Just returned from road trip to west Montana. My travel kit included:

ESEE 3
Spyderco Dragonfly and Endura
Leathernan Wave
Mora
SAK

Used them all in either EDC, food prep, various tasks. Endura usually in CCW set up

My EDC goes with me everywhere nothing different. On a road trip I'll be in my Jeep where I keep a Swiss Champ and a Swiss multi tool.

Pretty much sums it up for me. Heck, I don't drive 26 miles to and from work without my EDC (Protech TR-5).

So much of the choice depends on my destination and anticipated activities but most assuredly the following, in one form or another will be with me.

a Leatherman multi-tool
some manner of H1 knife ... typically a Pacific Salt or two (PE & serrated)
An Emerson folder
Becker BK-2 or some other Becker.
