Robust 3" Folder

I hate to be the one to say it, but how about a small sebenza? It's $330, so it's only $30 over the limit. Don't let the looks fool you, it's more of a tank than you think.

I'm just worried the small sebenza would be too small. (I've never handled one) if I could get a large I would get that.

any more suggestions guys?

Cold Steel medium sized Voyager. There on back order right now, but is has a 4 inch handle and 3 inch blade and appears to be fairly stout. You can order direct for about $100.00 definitely within your price point.

I think if a small Seb is too small for you, I'd cross the PT off your list as well.

For all your cutting needs the Sage 2 should work very well, unless you really need that tank-like overbuild.

If you prefer a backlock then the modern classic workhorse that is a Caly 3 is splendid as well. And you'll have plenty of money left !

As long as your arent doing something illegal or or flashing your knife in

public whos going to know your have a knife with a blade a little longer

than 3" say 3 1/2".

You have large hands as I do and I cant imigine your hand can be

comfortable on a handle any Less Than 4 3/4". This means you need a 3 1/2"

blade to fit that longer handle to be Comfortable For You;) I think there are

more choices in robut knife with a 3 1/2 blade than a 3" blade.

Which is more important to you Looks(3") or Comfort(31/2)?:):

I'll second the old-style CS AK-47. I've beaten the snot out of mine, and it just shrugs off the abuse. It's 1/2 inch over your 3" limit, but I doubt it would raise eyebrows.

If you want one of the newer Tri-ad locking folders, the new CS Rajah III could work. From what I've seen Andrew Demko put the Spartan through (same construction and materials, just smaller with different blade profile), it will be a beast. Again, a bit long (3 1/2 vs 3), but 4mm thick bladestock.

I've got large hands and like stout folders, so I understand your preference

If you really want to spend money on something higher end, I highly recommend David Mosier's work.

I've thought about that too, and It's a good point. Im not the person thats waving their knife around much, or provokes somone to check its length :p

I'd say comfort is more important, but looks are always important too.

Since a few others recommend knives that have a blade that's a bit too long, here is my slightly oversized recommendation that seems to fit your needs very well: Spyderco PARA-MILITARY: a big handle, a 3 3/32" blade - a hair above 3", blade thickness 4mm - sturdy enough, and a compression lock you simply can't break. One of the best, for sure.

Big hand fillling handle and stout blade that comes in at 2.7 inches just enough to make it legal most anywhere but not to small to be a good user. as opposed to what some people have said you can have a large handle and a small blade.

also it can be had for well under your asking price

Yeah :D

To be honest id just carry whatever i wanted because i have a concealed carry license where i am so the knife is the least of my worries but if i was gonna stay legal id definatley carry one of those and an emerson combat karambit which is also legal but scary as hell looking ;)

Gentlemen,

Discussions about ignoring or circumventing existing knife laws have no place on this or any other internet knife forum. Knife (weapons) laws are nothing to muck around with. I am sure a mod will be around shortly to expand on my $0.02, but for now please keep the discussion restricted to knives pertaining to the OP's original query, i.e. knives of legal carry length in Rhode Island (under 3" blade, measured from where handle ends, not where the sharpened end begins).

Thanks,
/nottamod

thank you for your concern

any more suggestions for knives slightly over 3" assume I will keep them in my house.

Thank you nottamod, that needed to be said. In fact that should a sticky on here.

Where im from cops do measure knive, and if youre a hair over the legal length they'll bust you, so stick with whats legal guys.

How about the Benchmade Mini Stryker? Plenty robust for daily cutting tasks. The tanto version has a specially strong blade design, and its under 3 inches:
