Rockwell Hardness Tester

Appreciate it! Thanks for making this thread in the first place. Kind of odd I have to immediately defend myself from a “supermod” who has no idea what he’s talking about, but whatever. I’ve been sort of avoiding this forum due to the moderstors I’ve seen, and the overall vibe I get from the people on here. Doesn’t seem like a very welcoming place, nor does it seem that a lot of factual information is being shared on here. I chose Reddit as my primary platform due to the younger general age demographic. The younger generation is typically more open to learning, but I’ll give it a shot regardless. Thanks again!
Welcome to the forums. However, it will be in your best interest to conduct yourself in a professional and non-confrontational manner if you wish to stick around to make your arguments.

And I can assure you that knarfeng knarfeng is not someone who has no idea what he is talking about. That doesn't mean he's always right, but he has many bona fides.

Now, make your case in a civil manner so I won't have to intervene.

I’m totally open to it, I went full circle on Metal Complex, and me and him are now working together. But the immediate attempt to discredit something he knows nothing of is very telling of his character IMO. We’ll see how he responds.
A lot of people don't take Reddit seriously, so it's probably that.

It probably is, and I understand them. Reddit at times is pretty unintelligent. A quick look through my website, database, or posts would put that thought to rest. All of my testing is done properly, my machine(s) are calibrated, verification blocks are being used. I know what I’m doing, and have been doing it for most of my adult life. I work in an accredited independent metallurgical test lab, and perform more Rockwell testing than I can count. Literally tens of thousands of samples every year. I perform audits for the likes of BHT, Boeing, Sikorsky, Bombardier, Grumman, etc. I’ve had numerous attempts at discrediting my work, and I’m honestly tired of coming home after working on aerospace parts for major companies, just to be discredited by guys using Google AI and 3 minutes of “research”. It gets tiring, and it’s extremely annoying at times. Sorry if I sound PO’d, at this point I don’t know how to respond to this type of thing.

Here is a quote from the previously referenced ASTM E140 you may find helpful: "Because of their approximate nature, conversion tables must be regarded as only an estimate of comparative values. It is recommended that hardness conversions be applied primarily to values such as specification limits, which are established by agreement or mandate, and that the conversion of test data be avoided whenever possible."
There are several other relevant paragraphs but I think that gets to the heart of it.

Hey Larrin! I am actually not sure where he got the idea that I was using superficial on blades from. I have tested a few razor blades out of curiosity and made little posts about them. But no knife blades have been tested with superficial, however I absolutely have the ability to do so.

Glad to see your results being shared on another platform, I've been following you on Reddit for a while now. I think you have every right to defend yourself and you met a confrontational attitude with what I feel was an appropriately confrontational response...just keep in mind that said interaction was with someone who hands out the bans here. That said, in the interest of your data being in front of as many eyes as possible, politeness will go a long way. You will always be met with skeptics, some of whom will know what they're talking about and others not as much. If you respond to them all with grace and factual information you won't ever find yourself in the wrong.

While conversions may only be an estimate of comparative values, I see what you are doing as not much more than providing an independent third party data point. All the same questions that are being asked of you should be asked of the manufacturers providing the data where their products are being sold. They have something to gain from good numbers. Being that you are not doing anything more than providing information, you have no reason to do anything but be as accurate as you can be, and I think you are providing valuable information to consumers.

I am normally very polite, and will definitely be polite going forward. My general attitude about this project has been very positive, as can be seen on Reddit with my posts. I also am not super interested in this platform, so if I get banned, so be it. I won’t lose any sleep over it. Being discredited out of the blue definitely ticked me off, and I reacted as I felt necessary. I will apologize to the supermod in question if he chooses to extend an olive branch of sorts, but not until then. If this platform is interested in my testing, then I will begin posting here as well. Thanks dude!

Let's get past the drama. No one is threatening to ban you...we are all interested in facts. If you are civil in your discourse, there will be no issues here.

Intelligent folks can disagree without turning a discussion or difference of opinion into a dumpster fire.

Now, let's move beyond talking about banning, and your not being interested in this site...if you are going to contribute, go ahead. You have everyone's attention. But off-topic discussion regarding the site and its members is not what this thread is for, and further comments in that vein will be moved offline.

Sounds good to me. I will make a thread (when I figure out how this site works, lol) and post my website and whatnot for the forum to see. Sorry for the early morning drama, I felt attacked for no reason.

T TaylorHardness , Have you had the chance to test any Chris Reeve Knives? I didn't see any on your website.
Funny enough, I had this question yesterday over on Reddit. I’ve actually had several people say they were sending me a CRK…then not send it. Something about those CRK’s makes people nervous to send em my way😆. I’m sure I’ll get a few eventually though.

As a reminder folks, off-topic or confrontational posts not related to the topic at hand will be removed. We've settled the matter of drama already.
Consider this a no-drama thread from this point on...no matter which side you favor.

I searched for this & couldn't find it. This guy has his own Rockwell hardness tester & he posts the results completely unbiased. Hinderer & Strider got super low scores. Spyderco flies high.

I went to his database tab, clicked on manufacterer and pulled up Hinderer. 9 of 10 results displayed were above 60.0 and the other was 59.3.

How/why is that a “super low score”?

Welcome to the forum, stick around, post some info. Plenty of interested people, that would like to see it.

🙂👍
Thank you! We’ll see about sticking around. I’m very much so not a fan of the overreaching moderators. Reddit has been good to me so far, by letting me post my results without interfering mods. So we’ll see!

The platform my data is on has no bearing on the accuracy of my work.
I don't disagree.

Dude, please chill. BF isn't the unmonitored playground that Reddit is, which is a large part of why many of the Reddit folks can't handle it here. Immaturity isn't tolerated like there. Act like a grownup and all will be fine. There is a set of rules, just follow them and you will not run afoul of the mods. Nobody will have any issues with your data, but again, keep the emotions out of it.
