Rodent 9 / Scrap yard 911 dilemma

I need some help deciding which knife to go for.

Can someone post pics showing how a hand grips the r9 handle - the mid-notch looks uncomfortable.
I wouldn't use the index finger choil as that's just for fine work. I'm most likely to hold the handle, with two fingers either side of the notch. So yeah pics would be good.

Does anyone know the weight of the 911 ?

911 is much lighter than the Rodent 9, roughly 16 oz. vs 23 oz.

I'd go with the 911 personally as it's much lighter, more blade heavy balance, better shock absorbing Res-C handle and as a bonus it's cheaper......:)

Notch?? You mean the hump?

Give me a little clarification on what you mean by the notch and what hand grips you would like to see. (hammer grip, saber grip..) I'll snap a few for you.

That would be a tough choice for me as well....Im not a fan of res-c, as far as looks are concerned but im also not sure the rodent 9 would be comfortable with the hump handle.....The rodent 3 hump is fine but the handle is a lot smaller so fingers line up, and its a 3 finger grip on that 1 for me anyway. Im still waiting on my rodent 4, but the rodent 5s handle is spread out and the hump is not positioned in a comfortable place for me personally if i was doing extended or vigorous cutting/chopping. But for a quick cut its no problem of course.

I guess id have to go with the 911 for a user and a r9 as a collector, i don't care for the looks of res-c but i cant deny that it is comfortable in hand, and for use comfort is a huge factor!

ETA; sorry double post.

Sorry, yes I meant the hump. I would imagine holding the knife with two fingers either side of the hump in the following grips

Forward hammer

Forward saber (thumb along spine of handle/blade)

Reverse

Cheers mate, ps how comfortable do you find it?

Okay, I'll snap some pics when I get home from work.

I'm either lucky, not picky or both, But there haven't been too many knives I've handled that I hated. Obviously some are more comfortable than others but I think the R9 is very comfortable. I have not done any hardcore chopping with it yet. Only some light work cleaning up branches poking through my fence in the back yard wearing gloves. (I seem to be allergic to some sap)

I have not handled the 911, But I assume the handle is the same or close enough to the taliwhacker. Style wise, The R9 beats the 911 IMO. Comfort and weight I have to give it to the 911. The Res-C handle is pretty hard to beat in comfort and shock absorption.

They are both great blades. For extended chopping I do prefer the Res C. For looks I have to go with the R9. I know that doesn't help much.

Forward hammer.

Saber.

Saber choked up using the choil. Pretty comfy actually.

Reverse. The least comfortable for this knife.

I wear a medium glove so I don't have small hands, But my hands aren't huge either. The handle on the R9 is pretty big. I guess as a user the only advantage it may have over the 911 is it has a hammer pommel.

Here are a couple pics showing different grips and where the hump falls. I have large hands and wear XL gloves. For me, it locks in nicely.

I sold my Rodent 9 because as much as I loved the looks, the handle didn`t work for me. I used mine for chopping one time and it felt like it would fly out of my hand .For regular use it was comfortable ,but I wanted it for chopping. Go with the 911 and chop away in comfort.

Thanks for the pics guys that's really helpful.

I would prefer a full tang knife with some weight yet equally distributed. I think the 911 is going to be too top heavy for my liking.

Going to give the r9 some thought now.

Sadly (my bank account does not think so) the R series Swamp Rat just don't work for me (in hand) due to the bump. I really wanted them to but when I handled magoo48s R9 out here I knew I would never be happy with them.... :( I do however have a couple of 911s and could not be happier with them... ;)

I probably only use it occasionally for chopping wood when camping. But would also keep it for self defence both at home and when hiking abroad in 3rd world countries where lawlessness prevails. Afraid guns are illegal where I live and we have an increasing number of burglars willing to use violence.

I would suggest Get the waki or rucki if self defense is a main priority. If you have any training with knives I would suggest a smaller more nimble blade like the r6. It's easier to move offensively and defensively with a smaller blade, but if reach is a concern then the waki will take the cake.

The waki is still an amazing chopper for when you need to do that too. Imho anyway

Hey, yeh ive looked at the rucki - it just seems a bit thin / light weight being 3/16'. Would have loved to get a busse gladius but they are no longer available new.

You are right big knives are hard to use, a fact most people deny. I have an Esee 4 and im in the process of getting a handmade piece (5'-6' blade) from guycep whos supposed to be one of the best custom makers in the uk - can anyone confirm ?
