Rolex Deepsea

The thought of selling the Submariner is on my mind. Once it gets serviced, I might list it on eBay. Does $6000 sound reasonable?

Found two the other day in a local jewelry store. Serviced by Rolex, and they looked basically mint. Both going for $5500. Thinking between 6-8 years old. Not sure there.

My Sub is a reference number 168000 transitional with a 9.7 mil serial number (1987) and has box, papers, anchor, and hang tags... band has no sag. This variant was made for less than 9 months making it the rarest Sub.

Depends on the model and age/condition. I've seen them as low as $2k.

Sometimes we kick around terms without understanding what they mean. I've done it myself. Here we must distinguish the difference between VA compensation for service connected disability and Welfare. A disability is a form of impairment of condition; hearing loss, skin condition, etc. Someone may very well be able to run a marathon and have a VA disability. Regardless, most of what others have is not our business unless fraud is considered. He/ she served, earned it, and medical staff awarded it. It's not a form of welfare and shouldn't be compared to illegals collecting food stamps. Sensing anger your post I wonder if jealousy is involved here.

Thank you for your service! For everyone else taking a cheap shot from the sidelines, please stop to consider Charlie Mike's words.

There is a stark difference in people taking advantage of the system and people using benefits that they have earned. It's far to easy to lump everyone into the "entitlement generation" but, some have earned what they are receiving.

A little off-topic, what is recommended for people who have developed an allergy to common watch materials? I started with an allergy that developed over time with leather watch bands. Then on to stainless steel bands and cases. Now Titanium ... :( Not real bad right now but, more than a day and I get a flaky rash from contact.

The $10 plastic TIMEX :sorrow: works ...... so far the synthetic Luminox is okay.

Would platinum or gold be likely solutions? Or something else? I have several nice mechanical watches I can't wear now so, I'm wondering if the backs of the cases could be plated or painted with a new watchband to put them back in service (no nylon NATO watch bands please).

Cashing them in for a different watch is an option but, if I go down that path I want to make sure I haven't traded off watches I have treasured for a long time to get something different that I can't wear for very long.

TIA,
Sid

Titanium is biological inert.

That's why I bought a Ti watch. :( Unfortunately, it looks like I'm developing an allergy to it.

Tell me Matt, when was the last time you descended to 12,000 feet below sea level? Did it bother your ears? Nice watch! I like the Titanium back, the curved sapphire crystal and the Glidelock clasp. My Sub is only good to 1,000 feet, but I hardly ever get down that far.

You need it when you fall out of the submarine :)

Are you sure it's not what's on it? Do you shower in it? If so, are you trapping "stuff" in it's bracelet or between the caseback and your skin?

No I don't shower with it on and I periodically clean the watch band but, I guess it is possible I might catch some airborne dust or pollen while wearing it. I haven't ever noticed any grit from airborne particulates or anything else when I wiped it down other than sweat on hot days.

Plenty of guys drop $10K on a used bass boat or a pop-up camper that gets used 5 times and then decomposes behind their garage for the next 9 years until it is hauled to the dump. But a high end watch gets used and fondled 30x every day for the next 20 years. So I'm all in favor of this kind of toy, because unlike a bass boat it makes you feel good every 20 minutes. I want one.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Plus that bass boat or pop up camper, or even motorcycle, will worth nothing in that 9 years, however if Charlie decides to sell the Rolex in ten years, he will get a return on his money. Maybe not all of it, depending on the economy, but he'll be getting cash back. A Rolex is like a fine shotgun, it will always be worth something. When the economy took a dump in 2008, and my son's company got bought in the drain, he sold his Rolex and got money enough to get him out of the sewer for a bit, and tide him over till he got another job. The old bass boat behind the shed won't do that.

The only thing better is some gold in the safe.

Gold/silver is the next move.

Very nice timepiece man! I've seen you mention acquiring gold/silver in another thread, do you have a source you could share? I am interested as well. a little research yielded many results, I felt like I could be getting jipped really easily. Is it really that readily available and it's just about finding a good price? Or should I beware? Sorry to sound newb-ish but I've never dabbled in precious metals before...

I buy at a local coin shop.
