Rolex, do you deserve one?

Hehe- just watching some auto racing on Speed, and one of the sponsors is Rolex. The commercial blurb..."The year it takes to make one is nothing compared to the time it takes to deserve one."

Deserve? We're talking about a wristwatch here, not the Medal of Honor or the Nobel Prize. I imagine if Michael Millken walked in to the dealer with a pocketful of his ill-gotten monies, he'd "deserve" one too....

In the same vein of "pretentious ad copy that pisses you off", check out the web site for Tilley hats sometime. http://www.tilley.com/home.asp?countryCode=US

"But What May Be Most Wonderful of All?

Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately.

Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.

Here is what some people have written us:

"As my husband and I crossed a parking lot in Menerbes, France, a man hailed us. 'Isn't that a Tilley Hat you're wearing?' he asked my husband Tony. 'They said this would happen!'

"We laughed as we went over to meet him and his wife. They were a delightful couple and the recognition of the Hat was one of the high points of our trip... It happened again in St. Tropez."

Also, one of the local radio stations here in Calgary has as the central tenet of their ads that "We play what WE want," including ads that have people calling to make requests and getting turned down.

I wear my ABS hat everwhere and have no watches, rings, ir other hanging metal attatched to my skin. I came with all the holes required. I DO, however, have pockets full of metal.

Rolexs are a status symbol. Nothing more, nothing less.
One can buy a watch of similar or better quality for 1/2 to 1/8 of the price.

Would you say the same about a Sebenza or other high end blade?

My opinion is if you are going to buy a Rolex, it should be worn. Just like a quality knife should be carried.

The exception would be art knives, investment knives & those insane diamond blanketed watches which aren't really designed to be EDC's anyway. Before I get flamed on the "art knife" comment, take a look at the cover of the November issue of Blade...beautiful knife, but not one that can really be used.

IMO Rolex isn't like so many other brands where the logo is so big and emblazed across the watch that you can see it from across the room. The Rolex symbol is very understated...you have to be up close and looking right at it to even recognize the logo.

I'd think that being given a Rolex would mean about a billion times more than buying one myself.

That being said, I deserve a Rolex. Please send me one ASAP. :D

This is actually quite true...it's just such a great hat. Well i only use Tilley and Akubra and i find that i actually am looking at other people's hats and wanting to ask them about it. But i don't. I'm kinda shy.

Just like if i see some dude using a Microtech in some out of the way place i'd want to ask him about it.

By the way...Tilley hats are actually really good. Tough, light and easy to maintain. Fits very nicely too.

Wouldn't buy a Rolex at factory wholesale price... I've got three Omagas, a pair of Tutimas, a Breitling and a Daniel Jean Richard... the only thing I wear is my Seamaster. It would be one thing if the watch was really worth the asking price, but it's not. Half of it is the watch. The other half is the "prestige".

And, no, you don't see a sebenza clipped to my pocket either.

Rolex is like Mont Blanc, pure status symbol and everyone knows what is it. Ask the common man what a Piaget or a V. Constantin (err, I can't spell that loong name) is and tell me the answer. Rolex, MontBlanc, Mercedes Benz, Buck knives(not saying that they're a status symbol) are all household names.

Sure, I DESERVE a Rolex, and a Sebenza, and a Mercedes...But I wear a Casio Protrek, I carry a Benchmade 805/806, and I drive a Ford Tempo.:D.

Well my GMT-Master II was a gift from my wife. So was my SAK
And, I wear/carry them both everyday. Personally, I think I'd prefer the Ritter Mini Grip over the SAK, but I'm not about to complain to my wife about a gift she got me. :)

BTW, many can say the same thing about "status symbol" about Breitiling. IMO the Breitiling has a much more flashy logo (read: hey look at me, I'm a Breitling) than the Rolex.

Yeah, but it only cost us half the cost of the Rolex.... :p
