Rolex, do you deserve one?

UH OH here we go again with the Rolex verses Timex crowd :D

My thought exactly. As soon as you mention the word Rolex in a thread, you might as well throw in the words Sebenza and Mercedes-Benz and go make some popcorn!

As Bette Davis said, "It's going to be a bumpy ride."

I like Rolex, but I liked Omega better. :p
And yes I have a Mont Blanc and Mnandi. None were bought for "status". I like the style AND quality.

As far as deserving any of it.....HELL YES I DO!!!! :p

Rolex is the only watch that maintains significant value in the secondary market. No other watch has this. I have a gold Rolex, I think it's called "President", apart from a few others, steel, half-gold.

Buy price was about US$11K, about 8 years ago. Go to a second hand dealer anywhere, and you can easily get half of that, if not a bit more.

Rolex was the first commercial waterproof watch, also the first commercial self-winding watch, just like mercedes made the first commercial motor car.

The Rolex designs have been around long a long time and testify to their popularity.

If you just want a watch to tell the time, get a timex. I have one for running. If you want one that you can leave to your kid, get a Rolex.

Incidentally, when you service your Rolex(once every two years) you have to cough out about US$200 for whatever model, gold or steel.

One of my colleges wore a Rolex when some robbers tried to steal his briefcase in a neighbouring country. They grabbed his briefcase and hacked at his hand with a parang when he didn't let go. He was hit on his steel Rolex and it saved his hand. Eventually they ran off with nothing.

He happily bought another one.

As an investment, I can think of better things to go into. As for strength, How about a steel or titanium Tutima.

*Breitling Colt
*Patek Phillipe (sigh)
*Audmers Piguet Royal Oak
*Paul Picot (the Regulateur)
*Girard-Perragaux Chrono Sport
*IWC Portofino
*Anything else with a good old 2892-A movement and 18K/Croc

All of the above before a Rolex.

We need a dead horse icon for this one. People are going to buy and use what they want. Why beat them over their heads for their choices? Is my wearing a Timex or a Rolex going to affect your opinion of me? If it is you can kiss my

I second the feeling that owning a Rolex is a "want". I've owned easily dozens of watches, but none of them were a Rolex. Once I had the means I bought a Submariner and haven't worn anything since.

That said, a lot of the Rolex mystique is the name...they don't keep the greatest time, they can be a little maintenance heavy and, like a Jag, once you "lift the hood" they're never quite the same. But I wouldn't trade my for anything!

Many folks buy the next "cool" watch every few years....at $1K to $2K a pop. Which was the cool one a couple of years ago, the "museum watch?" Looked cool until the dot-com bust, now they look so 90's. :)

Instead of owning a bunch of these, you can get one good Rolex that won't fall "out-of-fashion."

Ya know..I really DON"T know if I deserve a Rolex, but if some one wants to donate one I will be happy to find out!

Like Charlie, I've had dozens of high / low end watches but I ALWAYS wanted a Rolex Sub just like the most famous gadget man ever....Bond...James Bond. Sure I wear my G-shock to the gym but my sub is on the rest of the time. All of those other watches are in a drawer with dead batteries or un wound.

Never a truer word said. I wear a Rolex Sea Dweller most days. Does that make me a better person? No. You wear a Timex? Are you inferior? Of course not. Of course Rolex is a status symbol - as is everything we buy wear and cut with.

Does it give me pleasure? Every day I put it on - and I don't need to justify that to anyone :D

I bought a GMT master when I was in the Navy in 1976 and have had it serviced once. I still wear it today and it keeps great time. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if I could pay what I did in 1976-$380.00.

I bought a his & hers Raymond Weil Tango watches a few years ago for $895 each. I couldn't justify the cost of a Rolex plus my Tango is thinner and just as attractive, in my opinion.

Last November, we took a cruise ship and visited a St. Thomas Rolex store. They offered huge discounts on Rolex watches plus they were selling our Rayomnd Weil's with buy one, get one free.

He who waits can profit greatly. It could easily pay for your cruise.

I have nothing against Rolex, but it's funny how a company that pumps out a lot of watches a year, can maintain it takes a year to make one! :D
Wouldn't buy a Rolex myself, but there's no doubt in my mind (after ten years of being a watch-nut) that it's great quality and worth the money for those who like Rolex.
That said, I absolutely cannot stand the hype in commercials, never mind which watch company they come from!
I wear a Fortis as my daily watch, a 1967 Omega Speedmaster Pro for special occasions and a 1969 Omega Seamaster De Ville for shirt and tie.
All of them are bought because I like them, not beacause of commercials or because I "deserved" them! :D

I very rarely wear a watch. If I feel the need for one I'll go to the supermarket, buy the cheapest POS I can find and drop it in the bin when it dies and buy another next time I think I need one. I'm just not a watch type of guy I guess.

Yeah, I deserve a Rolex. Unfortunately, I'm in a Romex income bracket.

The ten dollar Casio works fine for now, but some day...

One of my fathers friend got mugged in front of his house about a month ago. They came, they hit him straight away with the parang. Luckily he wasn't cut bad. They tried to steel his car but they didn't know how the keyless start worked. So they didn't get anything.

Funny thing is this guy is the chairman or managing director or whatever (someone important) for The Hour Glass , a chain of expensive watch shops. He has loads of watches and even stated to my dad once that he wears his Patek Phillipes while playing golf. So i guess the robbers really missed out on getting at his watch 'cos i'm quite sure he had a few grands on his hand.

One of those old "cops" episodes had a segment where a young guy was mugged for his Rolex. He was laughing, though; it was a knock-off he'd bought from a street vendor for 10 bucks....

I got a "genuine" Rolex from my partner who bought it at a stall in China for six dollars american. Pretty good deal I think

Comparing it to my other partners real Rolex, it looks identical to me. Of course, it won't keep time, but thats a different problem.

I had some bad Mexican food last night. I deserve Rolaids! :D
