Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

When I got my Gunstock bone Congress there were also smooth bone Congress RR with Acorns for a shield and a different tang stamp (horseshoes, mine is an anvil). Are these two types of Congress just different models or did the tang stamps etc change from one to the other at some point?

I can't say with 100% certainty, but my supplier lists Rough Rider's with round, bow-tie, acorn, etc shields. Same with the various types of scales. I suspect it is the same. I think they call it their Tobacco Bone handle.

Thanks for the pics. I think the acorn shield and smooth bone indicates their "Outdoorsman" series. Looks pretty nice too!

I may be a search - idiot ... But I can't seem to find an answer to a questioni have:

Regarding the rough rider 2 blade trapper with the clip, Spey, and lockback. Do both blades lock or only one?

Thanks In advance!

I'm pretty pleased with this RR FB, particularly after R.c.s. very kindly sent me a smart leather sheath to replace the stock Cordura one :)

Jack, it looks very Loveless, so should be a fantastic user for around $25. What would blow my mind would be if RR used something like VG-10 or ATS-34 steel . . .
the price would still be less than $50, would it not?!

Absolutely Jeff, the lines are very good, just a great size for a hiking and camping knife I think. Cost me $17. I just bought it out of interest, but will definitely use it, particularly with the leather sheath. The steel is OK, but it would certainly be great to see RR using something better

Here's a new item that turned up on Tuesday.

Armour Hide Bone 3.25" DOUBLE lockback on a single spring. Both the tangs are covered by the bolsters so pocket carry is smooth. The bone jigging is very interesting and worth having.

Jack & Jeff, I have been using one of those Fixed RRs as my garden shed beater for 3 years now, it prepares wood shavings for the barbecue or sauna very satisfyingly tackles all manner of rough work and feel good in the hand too. Impressively sharp and retains very well, it has ousted the Mora as my land-knife and puts up with -25c temps in the winter with no splitting or problems. A good buy!

Thanks for the good news on the FB Will  That's a very interesting folder, apart from the covers, I'd say that it is near identical to a knife I bought last year, the same pattern, frame shape, and blades. However, that was made by Solar, supposedly in Japan, in the early 1970's! Spooky! ;)

Trappers in glow in the dark handles!!

[non-BF Dealer Link Removed]

need it for the canoe model..

I had been wondering about the quality of their fb's. Going to order one now to go with my mora! I'm hoping that these will entice me to get a nice fb from one of the makers on the forum!

The mora and RR are going to get used I the garden. Can't wait to grow some summer tomatoes!

Moonglow! Must must get!

I only have the one RR this little peanut that i have been carrying for about a week and although i do not give it a rough ride ( see what i did there? ) i have been more than happy with its performance, the clincher for me is no half stop, i do not like them.

Any opinions on the Colt Canoe pattern with carbon steel blades? I'm thinking of ordering one on payday. Other than the steel, how does it compare to the Rough Rider Canoe pattern?

At about the time you posted this, I was surfing the Web looking for details on exactly that knife. It's the one with the titanium-coated carbon steel blades and black micarta handles, right? Not sure why they use the coating, but I guess it makes more sense on carbon steel than on stainless, which Colt does for another canoe.

Didn't find much (it's 3 5/8 inches closed, just like Rough Rider's canoe), but I recently received a Colt buckshot bone teardrop jack that I'm very happy with, so I'm game for ordering another Colt sometime. But it probably won't fit my budget for a couple of months, so if you decide to get one soon, let us know what you think of it! Thanks.

I've several Colts and lots of RRs. All are fine knives of surprising quality, fit, finish and sharpness. Some where I heard that Colt and RR were made by the same company. Is that correct? I've collected, made, customized and used knives for over 60+ years and find RR and Colt to be the best buy on the current market. Excellent value for the money. Even the non-traditionals like the Colt linerlock in D2 are great knives. My Colt linerlock D2 is one of sharpest out of the box knives I've ever received including Kershaws and CRKTs and the Colt was only $18!
