Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

This thread is for the discussion of knives and not Chinese or other national policies, economics or labor laws. Please read the guidelines for the forum at the top of the main page for further information if you have any questions. This has been gone over many times now.

I recently got two "Rough Rider" knives from Smoky Mountain.
1. Large lady leg RR088, narrow (about) 4" blade $10.
2. Deer slayer RR085, BIG FAT folder, 4 1/8" blade $13.

I always reshape the blade backs and round the sharp handle edges on all my knives, just enough to personalize them. This RR blade steel is TOUGH. My regular files didn't seem to be doing much, so I got out my diamond file. Those Rough Rider blades really made that file (and me) work.

Both blades say "440 razor sharp steel". I don't know which 440, but they surely did come razor sharp out of the box.

Chinese or not, I'm going to spend a few bucks and get a lifetime supply of these knives before the price goes up to 5 or 6 times what it is now. Once the distributors find out what these knives are really worth, today's bargains will be gone forever.

OOOOOOOOWeeeeeee,

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Brother..

Son, You might want to put them good files back in to the tool box and save your sweat,, and invest in a decent belt sander if'n you really do fancy yourself a good 'ole blade re-grinding & blade re-buff'n aficionado!.

All the best to you son,

Anthony

Speaking of Rough Rider knives, I was in the south last week and stopped at Smokey Mountain Knife Works to look at a couple of SAKS. While browsing the store I went over to the Rough Rider area and it looked like they had every model made. I was looking at a couple of them and remarked to the lady behind the counter that for the money and being imported they didn't look bad and she said the owner of SMKW also owns Rough Rider Knife company and he does what he can to keep the quality up. I never knew that.

I picked up a full size Rough Rider Trapper the other day on a trade (Not sure what handle color it is) & I was definitely impressed for what they cost. It also says 440 SS. I don't know which 440 it is, but I'd guess it's 440A, but it seems decent.

Came across this one a few days back. Only cost me 2 bucks so the value is obviously there. Came out of the bucket razor sharp. ( it was in a rusty bucket at the swap meet ) F&F is right on. Actually it's awesome. I have never seen another like it so I am guessing that one day it will be quite valuable. Plus it's Surgical Stainless Steel !!!!

 :p ;) :D :D

Rare indeed. It doesn't get any better than Pakistanie laminate & surgical steel. Hold on to that bad boy.

Let's try to stay on topic here folks before it starts getting away from us. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I've been carrying a copperhead, about 4", for a few months since a fellow member on BB sent me one to test. I promised to post a review of it, so won't go into much here for now. I was impressed with the quality for the price. The edges held up better than I'd expected, using it every day at work. There was a fatal flaw though. Luckily not one that caused injury in this case. I'll expand on that once I've posted the promised review.

I'll be looking forward to that revoew, since I've been carrying a RR Copperhead for several months now. I really like the knife, and can find no flaws with it at all. it doesn't see much rough use, but it works for me.

"Fatal Flaw" ?
Come on now ! Don't leave us hanging !
Give us a pre-review summary of this flaw at least. :)
Is it something that would cause us NOT to buy the RR Copperhead...please say it ain't so!
I was gonna order one just based on the comments so far and the nifty look of the knife. :)

Anxiously waiting...

Mckgreg,
Does that tang stamp say "Frost"? ...I can read Pakistan, but not the tang stamp.

BTW, if that's a quarter, the knife must be a whopper!! :)

Give the toothpick to your wife for cutting chicken, they make great boning knives ;-), maybe you can get her addicted too, however that cuts into your knife dollars.

I've been pretty pleased with the Rough Riders that I've handled. I've heard good things about the Steel Warriors. And I've seen some Kising Crane & Boker Magnums I like the looks of. Does anybody have any idea how many of these are made at the same factory in China? Is there a Chinese analog of Seki or Solingen that makes Marbles and Magnum? Can we go by the look of the knife (all the traditional skinners) or only by brand (Rough Rider/ Steel Warrior)? There are some nice looking fixed blades that go for a song. If I can be reasonably sure they're in 440A and not 420J2 I'd like to try 'em out. Any clue? Thanks.

Frank

I don't think they have a lot of factories. I think a few factories make knives for a lot of other companies. I love my Bucks, my Canoe and my 373, or the imported version of the Cadet, and from what I understand, they are made by Rough Rider.
