Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I just got a new Buck canoe with the black pearl corelon and it is quite possibly the sharpest knife I have ever bought.

Decent f&f, too, for under 20 bucks!

I've been carrying it all week and it cuts anything fast!

I wouldn't be surprised if they are all made by the same manufacturer, maybe even in the same factory.

I've bought Rough Riders, Remingtons, Steel Warriors, and others, that all look identical except for the shield & brand markings. I sent two Sowbelly patterns to a member here a while back, a green Remington and an orange (IIRC) Rough Rider second. Aside from scale color, from a short distance they looked the same.

thx - cpr

I hope this isn't to far off subject but the young preacher intern staying with us has a little Rough Rider Stockman. He left it laying around before going to preach a weekend meeting in AL so I couldn't resist examining it! Nice fit and finish and the walk and talk is not shabby either!

I've been pretty pleased with the Rough Riders that I've handled. I've heard good things about the Steel Warriors. And I've seen some Kising Crane & Boker Magnums I like the looks of. Does anybody have any idea how many of these are made at the same factory in China? Is there a Chinese analog of Seki or Solingen that makes Marbles and Magnum? Can we go by the look of the knife (all the traditional skinners) or only by brand (Rough Rider/ Steel Warrior)? There are some nice looking fixed blades that go for a song. If I can be reasonably sure they're in 440A and not 420J2 I'd like to try 'em out. Any clue? Thanks.

Frank

I have a few different brands - RR, Owl Head, Steel Warrior and Smith&Wesson. The Smith and Owl Head knives are almost identical in construction & finish. The blades have swedges and a satin finish.

The RR & SW knives are completely different from the other two brands I mentioned , but they are identical in construction.

Has any one been buying the RR blue or pink cancer knives from SMKW? I have 4 of them now. Seems to be well made and the profits go to a good cause.

Tim

I think there for a very good cause and they are a great slipjoint with a nice price tag. ;)

it appears to be a very close copy of the Schrade LB7(one of the Greatest production knives of all time !). here it is with LB7 serial# 7898 (first year of production, 1978(or 77; debate) went to ~ 17,500)

Bought a RR Toothpick in red jigged pants last year and cannot find a bad thing to say about it.

I just got a Buck Deuce mainly for a Sunday go to meeting knife. This knife with how small it is and made so well blows me away! The walk and talk is just right and nice heat treat on what ever this steel is! Makes me want to try another one!

I'm planning to EDC the RR066 for a while to see how it holds up, afterwards it's probably going to be the subject of a giveaway.

Like I said before, China has been making swords and knives for centuries. I think they have it down. I have a $25 dollar gift certificate to bass pro shops and there are a few there that look like I may pick up. They are not RR's but they look like them.

I like rough riders. They are cheap enough but are well made to try different patterns out before you spend the big bucks for a case, queen, buck, etc. I have tried a few patterns that for one reason or anouther just didn't feel right. Glad I didn't spend alot on them. I say try one, you may like it.

Just found this thread, so I'll put in my .02. I have a dozen or so RRs and like them (especially the saw cut brown bone, and their stag), but IMO the Marbles Chinese stuff is even higher quality. They are absolutely one of the sharpest knives, out of the box, that I've ever seen, and they have some really good looking bone as well. Too dark tonight, but pics to soon follow. . .

Here's an old picture of some RR stags. Not sure if I've used this one before or not, but it's a decent photo.

I wish that Case and especially Queen would take notice of the edges on these RR and also the SAK brands!

RR knives come sharp all the time, some are wicked sharp. I had a guy cut a Serious flap on his thumb by closing a Peanut on it. At the time he was asking if they came sharpened ;-)). Many folks say they are good knives for the money, for my money they are just plain Good knives.

Best regards

Robin

Here's the pics of the Marbles 3-blade trapper, 3-7/8" closed. Good FF and razor sharp.

I wanted to try a little whittling and as much as I was drooling over Case, Queen or the like I didn't want to go all out if I wasn't going to keep up with whittling. I picked up a red bone RR whittler and it did a great job for me. The F&F were acceptable and the blade design and sharpness were excellent. If I decide to do further whittling projects I may go for a higher end knife but as long as this RR is working so well I won't have to rush. I feel like I will pass this one on if I do get a nicer knife later. I did have concerns about buying a non-USA made knife but for the price and the uncertainty of my whittling future I don't feel bad about the purchase.

I have purchased 7 Rough Rider folders in the last few months and have been amazed at the quality.

I have 3 of the "Rough Rider" series and they are as good or better than any Case/Cammilus/Schrade I have ever bought.

They produce a product functionally and aesthetically as good as ours, and at a fraction of the cost.

I wonder if technically, and factually this is now true...putting all biased opinions aside:confused:

I have been reading up on all these pages, and it seems as we get closer to today, these knives seem to have risen in quality.

I have bought about 30 Rough Riders, 8 Colts, a Marbles whittler, and a US Classic. All come the same factory from what I understand. The Rough Riders have improved since the beginning. My favorites are the sawcut bone and gunstock bone series. I am also fond of the Colts with the brown jigged bone, however, two out of five have emblems that fell off straight from the box. So far the only big flaw I have found is on a Colt genuine stag copperhead that has one scale that is more than twice as wide as the other AND the shield fell off. Overall, I have been very pleased with these knives. I am trying MANY different patterns and handle materials. I am ready to get a toothpick, peanut, barlow, canoe, and copperhead from GEC, Queen, or Case now.
