Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

That Spear bladed Old Forge certainly attracts me, kind of Old School European knife.

Despite the poor report on quality I'd give it a shot but can't buy them here in the EU as far as I can see. Maybe in some months or the Bay?

Well boys, I don't fancy the Old Forge, I prefer the other RR lines... The good thing is that there will be more for you! :D

Quote tstaut: "The ram's horn ones, I think, were made in a different factory. Side play, gaps, almost dangerously vague half-stop on one, none that I can detect on the other."
I'm sure this is what is happening. I recently (3 weeks ago) bought a few of the new RR "Heavy Hunter" line. I have been waiting for rain to stop so i can take pictures, but basically they are not up to the standards of the regular RR traditional style folders, even though these are more expensive.
RR has built a well deserved reputation for very good quality knives, with rarely a major 'issue'. Going to other manufacturers and marketing these sloppy knives will be the demise of Rough Rider unles they can quickly come to their senses and stick with what has been working so well.
Nothing lasts forever. It could be that the last 10 years of great RR knives for very low prices is coming to an end. Maybe buy up the good ones while they are still around.

My new favorites for quality vs price is the Colt series of Bone Stag and Buckshot Bone I think they're called......
Also there are a few other colts I really like......But to each his own,JD

Yes, the Colts are nice, Marbles too

Here's my latest Rough Rider :)

Oooo, that's just plain pretty. Model # please! Sowbelly?

Thank you :) Sorry the pic isn't the best :o Yes, Sowbelly Stockman, one of the Silver Select Rough Rider models, pattern # RR987

Here's a filched image.

Three of my four RR/Colt barlows. Orange bone one is missing somewhere... the downside of cheap knives. :)

My first RR arrived yesterday - a brown boned peanut for my peanut collection. All I can say is WOW! The F&F are at least equal to (if not better) than the Case peanut I received at the same time. What a bargain at 7 bucks. Definitely will be ordering more.

Well my RR sod buster came in to really impressed with little knife. The thing is built well the only complaint I have on it is the blade is very off center but for 14 bucks oh well. And man is it sharp probably the sharpest knife I've ever revived from a factory.

These Rough Riders are addicting!
#879 Copperhead, #778 Mini Trapper, #740 Small Barlow
#481 Barlow, #1000 Canoe
vonrichthofen (may I call you Red Baron? ;)), those are some nice Rough Riders!:thumbup: I especially like the looks of the smooth bone ones - that smooth bone canoe is really appealing!!

I just ordered one of these Boker Plus Barlows in 440C, thought I'd see what it was like.

Unimpressed with this :thumbdn: The RR Barlows are nicer knives at half the price
Thanks for the report, Jack. Sorry you had to be the "guinea pig" in finding out the quality of the Boker Plus Barlow.:o

I hope you're wrong, KJ, but your observations indicate a worrisome trend. :(

I agree, JD, those Colts are high quality, heavy duty, built like a horse! Here are a couple of examples: a Black Stag Bone sowbelly and a Buckshot Bone teardrop jack. Both superb knives for about $15 each, IIRC.

Very stylish sowbelly, Jack!:thumbup: Looks rather like a candy cane; not sure I'd like a candy can with a pint! :p

Nice ones, tstaut! I sure do like Rough Riders! :D

Congrats, HWS!:thumbup: Fantastic Peanut! I don't have a RR Peanut yet, but I definitely should rectify that situation!

Congrats, gonebad!:thumbup: I have that same model RR and think it's tops! ;)

5K Q's, thanks for the kind words. Actually that canoe is from the Painted Desert Acrylic line. I ordered a smooth bone one and this is what I recieved. I liked it enough to keep it, and at the prices for RR knives, I can easily order another one. My favorite is the saw cut bone Barlow. Beautiful scales on that one. The photos don't do it justice.

Thanks for the report, Jack. Sorry you had to be the "guinea pig" in finding out the quality of the Boker Plus Barlow.:o

No worries GT, I received a very swift refund. I should also mention that, on the knife I received, the kick on the main blade had been overground, making it sit too low in the frame, with the pen blade blocking the pull :thumbdn:

I've had several RR Barlows, and they've all been good I think

Very stylish sowbelly, Jack!:thumbup: Looks rather like a candy cane; not sure I'd like a candy can with a pint! :p

LOL! Thanks GT, I know what you mean! :D

Jack,I have one very similar to that sowbelly of yours.

I like the checkering on that one on the left, do you know what they call that?

They called it "Gunstock" (not to be confused with the pattern). I got it several years ago, I don't think they make them anymore. It's kind of like a shallow scratted bone. Great grip!
