Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Sod Busters from them have proved a mixed bag for me:

Large Red Bone Liner Lock was the first and nearly the last:eek:It bit me very badly, shows my incompetence but they do turn out a keen knife. Red Bone scales lost a lot of colour during washings, rather alarming(but even dearer makes do this) then one day it suddenly went into meltdown:D The pivot got loose and it literally broke up! I 'cremated' it as I had a bad feeling about it.

Last year I got one of the Old Yellow small sodbusters: Really well made knife, small, slim and very pocket friendly.Smaller than the CASE jr for instance. No gripes, spring is heavy. Well pleased.

Tried another Liner Lock Large....This time in faux Tortoiseshell which I think RR does rather well, as the brass liners darken it gets even better. Good fit(doesn't bite or lose colour:D) But it's a big knife not suited for pocket carry except on a coat.

I'm eyeing yellow and white Canoes from RR. The Gunstock Canoe I got from exchange is really well made.

I got my Rough Riders in today. I'll post up a "first impressions" shortly. But, there is one I will be returning - a bark pearl scaled stockman. The other two seem to be okay knives on first glance, but I need to get more familiar with them tonight.

I bought a Copperhead, a 3-blade Congress in whittler configuration, and a small/medium stockman (the bark pearl scaled knife). Total delivered cost was $34.48 for the three knives.

My latest Rough Rider is worthy of posting and i think it is one of their best yet.
comes in a nice tin:

a bone handled 4 3/8" Jumbo Trapper:

of note are the nearly "square and flush" joints, something that has only rarely been done in the last approximately 75 years. The tang is nearly flush with the bolster ends in the closed and 1/2 stop positions:

Like nearly all RRs it easily shaves arm hair with either blade.
If (hopefully, when) i get a deer this Fall, i am going to try and do all of the field dressing with this knife. If it's still reasonably sharp when the job is done, then it really is a good knife.
I'll post back with the results, but i bow hunt so don't expect this to happen too soon.

Hi,

Very nice. I like the jigging on those scales. Simple and tasteful I think. They seem to be trying to up their quality. I will be very interested to hear how you like the performance in the field.

Roland, is that a salamander on the shield? Any idea of the significance of that critter, whatever it is?

Jeff, I think it's supposed to be a beaver.

(But I really like your take...Takes me back to all those old tales of the early mountain men trapping those pesky salamanders in the Wind Rivers! :p)

I agree it looks just as much like a salamander as a beaver but the "wind river" bit is lost on me. Maybe because we don't often see salamanders here in Canada anymore. They seem to be disappearing along with the frogs.
There now is a "Bullfrog" brand of knives, "coming" out of Tennessee.

Well i did say i would not post any more of my RR or Colt folders, but i just received this Colt Gunstock with an impressive looking Clip blade to go along with the 2 blade(Spear & Clip) Gunstock i posted earlier.

i just got the colt railsplitter and it's so pretty that i probably won't use it. but then again i may.

I hope that the Beaver represented on the sheild of the RR is copy of a Native American representation. If it is someones modern representation it is a cause to smile.....I would go more with a bullfrog with a beaver tail than a salamander.... or not..........300/ch

Recently bought this Tobacco bone Congress on Ebay, for $10.00 shipped.

Absolutely perfect fit and finish and the Tobacco bone and acorn shield are for me, one of the best looking RR's yet.

Of course, there are salamanders...and then there are salamanders...

(Wonder how those ol' fur trappers would have reacted to one of those bad boys!?! :p)

Why not use it? I certainly don't think it will affect the resale value. ;) It's your knife, you might as well enjoy it. Some guys enjoy their knives by looking at them when they're all brand-spankin' new, which is cool, I respect that. But I feel you can't really get to know a knife until you put it to work.

I have never regretted "breaking mint" on any of my knives, no matter how fancy or plain they might have been at first. You can always polish things back so they look "new" again if you want to.

After seeing RPROCTERS post, I had to have one of the RR Jumbo Trappers, too. It came today, and was hair popping sharp right out of the box, with zero blade play and good snap. Good solid half stops, too. Rough Rider just keeps getting better, and the ones I already have are darn good. Less than $18.00, postpaid.

BTW, Blues, the emblem is a beaver, but it looks like it was stepped on by a mountain man's pack string.
