Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I loaned a friend one of my fixed blade RR knives two years ago during the Deer hunt. He dressed tree white tails without sharpening, then he wouldn't give it back to me ;-)))
Rough riders are great knives period.

The downside: how can i possibly justify buying anymore Custom knives ?

If I make it back to the US in time for deer season I must try and use my large coke bottle...great review and those images prove just how good these knives are! I have been surprised how well the knife community is taking to them.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I enjoyed taking the pics and composing my post. Truly i was very surprised. I expected the blade to dull part way through, which has been my experience with most other knives. I think the RRs are hardened to 57-58 Rc whereas many of my other knives are 60-61.
Towards the end i purposely began to cut through the hide from the hair side.
Normally cutting deer hair dulls a blade quickly.
Given all this, i don't have an explanation for why this blade held it's initial very sharp edge so well. But it did. It's still very sharp now after cleaning it up, so i'm very impressed with it's performance.
Now, we need more RR owners to repeat this test to see if this amazing edge holding is standard for most(all ?) RR knives.

 I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it. Thanks for taking the time to do the field test. That's the only way to see if they really work. I am really surprised at the edge holding properties of that knife.

Nice buck Roland!

Kerry, me too. i'd always thought that Rc was the best indicator of edge holding but maybe wear resistance is more important. i guess blade geometry may either help or hinder as well.
what aspects would you rank in order of importance for edge holding ?

I really don't study that much. There seems to be plenty of experts in that subject area already. As someone that has made a few knives, I do know they don't cut very well if the blade is thick. If you have to fight thru a project because of non-optimum edge geometry, it's possible that you might not be giving the steel a fair shake as far as performance goes.

I don't know..there are too many variables. I leave the atom splitting to the experts. I'm still a s'pert. :D

 Egads. My eyes must be deceiving me...;)

Yeah...that's right, and I rarely have an opinion about anything, but if I do, I keep it to myself, thank you very much. :D

Now look at what you guys did....I haven't bought a knife in ages and now I've gone and bought 2. A RR Long Rifle Canoe and a RR peanut (I've heard soo much excitement about that pattern that I just HAD to have one.).

Will do full reviews on them once they get here and I have time to spare.

Roland are you on the Rough Rider Payroll? Rough Rider stock jumped 3 7/8 today. :D

Very nice pictorial and congrats on a nice buck!

I just ordered 2 more...I find its a inexpensive way to try out patterns i normally wouldn't buy.

Has anyone tried the stoneworx models? is it genuine stone, the ads say it is but being chinese knives I am speculative before I purchase.

Rough Rider is an American owned brand. The manufacturer builds these knives to whatever specifications the brand owners have ordered.
I doubt there is any deception going on, but if there is, it would be at the marketing stage.
Thje prices are low enough that you could buy a Stoneworx RR and then get bak to us with your evaluation.

I've gone through this entire thread and i appreciate everything that was said about RR knives. I have been curious of them as of late and I believe i might go ahead and order a few. Have any of you used the Moonshiner series yet? Jigged corn cob bone handles... comes in a "whiskey" barrel pakage and includes a 2 fl oz mini flask. Could be a cool buy...think ill start w/ an outdoor series barlow and a whittler in the moonshiner series...i want that lil flask :D

I haven't had any interest in these knives until this thread. I had no idea they had so many patterns.

I looked at a vendor site last night, and I saw the jigged corn cob you are talking about. Wow... looks like one your grandpa could have carried. Really appeals to me.

That one might get me off center on these RR knives.

That little flask wouldn't hurt my feelings, either. This cooler weather makes them pretty practical to carry coffee additives in.....

I now own a mixture of Chinese-made Rough Rider and Kissing Crane knives.
The RR knives are not bad at all for the price!?
BUT, for a little more money, the Kissing Crane knives look and feel more "substantial", IMO.

I have a lot of RR's nice product for the $. Been wondering about Steel Warriors,
are they on the same level of quality as the Rough Riders?

Quote "Been wondering about Steel Warriors,

in a word: Yes. but be selective. there are some very nice Steel Warriors and some more 'average'.
I've been using a S.W. locking Copperhead for about 2 years. i really like it.
Master Clip blade is released by depressing the Wharncliffe secondary. comes with lots of handle variations. the 'candy apple red swirl' ( my description) is exceptionally nice. i also have one with Stag, but i don't like the thick Stag scales, prefer 'em slender.
I also have an exceptionally fine 4" Interframe 2 blade Congress (?) with pearl inserts. very well done.
