Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Looks like the main is a little too low.
If you lower the pen blade it looks like you would not be able to get "hold" of the nail notch for it.
Maybe a toothpick or something under the main would raise it up enough?

Another alternative might be to send it to the "Rough Rider Store" (SMKW) for an exchange.
I don't know if that particular Barlow is still stocked, though.

I have had some duds but these are all a pleasure to carry.

Thanks but by the time I pay for shipping, may be approaching the cost of the knife. The good and bad of RR knives. Most of the time they are very impressive.
Every thing else is excellent. Still like it.

I’ve got 5 RR barlows and 4 of the 5 are like yours. The one where the nick isn’t obstructed by the pen blade, has the strongest pull of the 5, so it offsets the benefit and makes it no less easy to open.

What I’m trying to say is, I don’t think your odds are good on exchanging it for another better one.

That being said, I think you are better off modifying your knife. Grind down the kick on the pen blade to lower it. You won’t need to take off much material to drop it significantly. Be careful not to lower it too much or you won’t be able to get at the nick on the pen blade.

Too bad they don't put the nicks on opposite sides of the blades like they do on some of their other jack knives.

Good advice. This was also at times an issue with the Utica/Kutmaster Barlows that RR based their design on.

Does anyone happen to know if Rough Rider has made a stainless Barlow with a wood or synthetic handle, pinned covers, and no shield?

I've been hunting for that configuration and can't get any closer than two out of three -- no shield and pinned covers, but white bone; white acrylic with no shield, but glued covers; ditto for imitation abalone; etc.

I don't think they've made a Barlow with wood covers.

I've not done it, but maybe you could fake the pins?
A trimmed sewing pin (with rounded head) set and super glued into a drilled hole in the acrylic cover?

The Szco Right Edge Barlow (210601) has rosewood covers, pins, and a lanyard hole. It also has brushed bolsters and satin finished blades, so it is not a smudge/fingerprint magnet. I think they are still making it.

If you can find one, the Sarge BSA Barlow (BSA5043676) has burl wood covers, pins, and a half stop on both blades.
Blades and bolsters are highly polished.
The last time I checked, it was not listed on their website, so it may be out of production.

Both the Rite Edge and Sarge Barlows I have equal or exceed the fit, finish, and snap of my Rough Rider Barlow (with imitation abalone covers)

Thank you! I'll take a peek at those.
