Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I bought two, one for the pocket and one for the collection. The red spacers I could do without, but they are well done. My main gripe is the absurdly small diameter lanyard hole that won't accept standard sized paracord. SMKW says that there will be a second run, but with different handle material. They say the same about their Micarta work knife (RR2038) which also sold out quickly.

Now they show up as in stock.
Not a big fan of the blue and black scales but I have a cure for that!
Thanks again joeradza.

It's rather odd how SMKW doesn't have some of the newest RR releases, not on their website or in their inventory. Yet some of their competing sellers have them first. I called SMKW and asked for information on two brand new models that were for sale elsewhere and they not only didn't have them, they had no information about them such as closed length. I mean really, they own the brand and have them made.

I just ordered three of the new denim work knives because I missed out on the first ones in black Micarta. If you're interested in brand new RR releases, you'll have to look at other vendor's sites because you won't see them at SMKW for awhile.

For those of you wondering about the Rough Ryder "Classic Carbon Steel" series.

An "update" ... of sorts ...

My RR1740 'Classic Carbon Steel' "Large" stockman (it be only an hair over 4.25 inches closed. (Not really truely "large", but RR calls it that, sooo....)

Any way, an 0.75 to 1.0 hour soak in ambient tepid room temperature white vinegar (after de-greasing/de-oiling the blades and springs with toothpaste and a old retired soft toothbrush) did give the blade's patina a noticeable improvement.

The backsprings, however, appear to be a stainless steel of one sort or another. No patina on the backsprings, at all, at all. :(

Since this (allegedly so called "large") stockman is the only "Classic Carbon Steel" series knife I have, I cannot (and don't) make the claim:
"All the knives in this series have stainless steel backsprings!" based on my one example.

However, it would seem logical that the knives in the series would all share that "feature".

No "Before" picture.

I hope the "after" satisfactorily shows the blade patina.

Suitable for carry now, at any rate. It isn't a daRn fingerprint and smudge magnet anymore. :D

These are really nice especially at the price. Got mine in today, shaving sharp out of the box. The blade is thicker than I expected but the grind is perfect. It cut off the end of an ear of corn with one swipe. I used it to strip the corn off the cob and slice some steak tonight. Very comfortable in the hand, sleek lines, elegant shield this will be a pleasure to carry and use.

Some interesting reserves from RR. The whittler is a large one and they come in canvas micarta with D2 steel. Check out the higher prices. That’s definitely a step up.

Yes, I just saw that. A bit more expensive, but they look nice.

Just a feeling, but I suspect that long after we are gone, these pretty, shiny things could be celebrated as artifacts of a bygone age. I don’t care one way or another if that comes to pass. I enjoy them right now, and I can afford it.
No doubt. Maybe on that long away day, the Rough Rider, Marbles, new Queen/Queen City, and offshore manufactured Schrade/Old Timer/Imperial will be worn down to "toothpicks" from use, while the premium brands like Case, GEC, Böker, and Buck's domestic 300 series, will for the most part, be pristine.
Kinda like the pre-war and turn of the 19th/20th century "low end" (note quotes) brands vs. premium brands seem to be.
More "low end" (note quotes)/low cost knives, like Schrade, Imperial, Ulster, Hammer Brand, Camillus, Colonial, etc. from back then have been "use up" than the premium brands such as Queen, Robeson, Cattarragus (spelling?) Remington, Case, KYKC, Sheffield, and Solgien manufactured, etc. have, from what I've seen posted in the "Old Knives" and other threads.
