Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

"They don't sharpen them because buyers want to put their own edge on for the type of cutting they do, just like in the old days ..." was the excuse most given for the pass modern Queens were given for the lack of cutting/slicing ability out of the box.
(Never mind the fact that that in "the old days" people who bought a new pocketknife expected to be able to use it right away, and even the least expensive no name "Made in USA" stamped knives were sharp out of the box...🙄)

I remember a couple years ago a big Queen fan bought a new Queen knife and thought there was something amiss with it. It had even grind lines, and the edge was sharper than the spine.

Me? I just figured modern Queen were intended for display, not use.
I love my Queens. Classic patterns with ATS34 steel, 420HC, D2 and 440C. I use every one of mine. Not perfect but handmade in USA. Do you use your Queens? Parker had Queen make the Case Classsics. Some classic knife brands were really Queens. Why do you want to denigrate them? Speaking ill of the dead will bring bad luck.

Never had one. The "old" Queen were and are way out of my budget.
I can barely afford a Rough Ryder now.

My comment wasn't meant to disparage Queen.
It was in response to a comment about the "old" Queens having an "atrocious edge" (his words, not mine) out of the box, by a member who has "old" Queen knives. From what he said, I got the impression he has or had several of the "old" Queen knives.
My comment is what I remember reading about them here on BF.
I quoted his post, if you care to go back and read what he said.

If you read his next post after mine, you will see he quoted my post, and agreed with my comment.

If you search the old threads for Queen, you will see that they were given a "pass" for shall we say ... "poor edges out of the box." ...?
From what I remember, that was one of the most common "complaints" about them.
The most common reason given that I remember for the "pass" is what I wrote.

I'm very happy that you love and use yours. 👍

I'll take your word for it that they are "Not perfect".
Nothing made by "humans" is after all, regardless of where or when it was made, or what it is.

My apologies for upsetting you.

Thanks, not seen a stag version before, will have to keep an eye out for one
Rough Rider did two genuine stag series: one very early in their history, and a second later run around 2008. The first run looks like white, un-burnt sambar, and has a round shield. The second series has burnt sambar and a propeller shield (like the small toothpick on the previous page). I have been able to identify ten different patterns in the first series, and about 12 in the second. The small toothpick from the second series should be RR665. Knives from either series do not come up often, and when they do they are sometimes mislabeled at sale.
Here are a couple whitlers from the first series:

I certainly like the LOOK of some of those Queen branded knives made by RR in the video. The Wharncliffe particularly attracts me but I don't suppose I can get hold of one economically in Europe.

The 'host' of the video is perhaps a little OTT with his enthusiasm about the bone, I agree with the Cockroach analogy of a later poster but kind of like it 🤣 There are gaps between the scale and liner but the backs do look very well machined/finished and for 20 USD it's a bargain not to be missed, note too sunk-joint which is something GEC should be going for more given the ultra sharp edges of their tangs...

They look decent knives, not too bad aesthetically, I just wish RR had branded them something other than Queen. It's an extinct American marque with a complicated history, best leave it there not resurect it, my view anyway.

Easy to get in the UK, can't say where because of forum rules though

I am surprised they did not use the Queen name, since they owned it, for the RR Reserve line.
That would have been too logical, if they had the Queen/Queen City brand when the RRR were introduced?
I don't remember If they had the Queen brands or not then.

I think they have had the Queen name for a few years, though I do not remember when they go it, or when RRR was introduced.

I am going to give away a RR2181 SBJ Blue scales, never used only admired.

I have never done a giveaway so hints are appreciated.

A new RRR showed up on a sellers website today, looks interesting, whatever panthera may mean. It checks a lot of boxes for me especially being a single blade and black micarta. But I just decided to order an alternative swiss made knife two days ago and spent the monthly knife budget.

Cheers,

Never have done a give away. So no clue how to.
There's a subforum just for GAWs:

But if you PM one of the Porch mods and check first, I bet you'll be able to run it in the traditional subforum.

Most people use a random number generator to pick the winner; some choose a favorite post, if they've required something other than "I'm in" for entries. There's no wrong answer as long as it's done in the spirit of generosity and you follow through.

Cheers,
Specs list it as 0.03" blade thickness, must be a typo...?
