Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

That blows. Dry Dirty joints, maybe?
Have you tried washing the joints yet?
I tried just adding oil and got extra grittiness as sometimes happens, I then flushed the joint with WD40, cycled it under hot soapy water, blew it out with compressed air, and added fresh oil and it's slightly better but not much. If I would've ordered from the normal place I figure they'd probably help me out but I took a gamble on the bay lol.

I also just received a great RR barlow which helps soften the blow!

On the plus side (if you're talking about "the normal place" being in the foggy hilly part of TN) they stand behind the lifetime warrantee, even if you did not buy directly from them.
They replaced a then 7+ year old pre "RR" number RR409 hawkbill I have that suffered a broken backspring ... untouched for two years (following my "mild" (Doctor's terminology) stroke), closed and in a cigar box 🤯🤨
that I bought off Amazon.
Try contacting them with an email. It might be a warranty issue. 😇👍

Hi,

I've had these about a week now.

I've never had these patterns, so it's been fun trying them. The fit and finish is a little variable between the three. The green mini-trapper is far and away the best for fit and finish. I'd put it against any production slippie out there. It walks and talks. And I've come to find that I kind of like the pattern. It's as good a working knife for my day to day use as is my stockman or Vickie Soldier.

The half-whittler is a real surprise to me. It's not quite as good a fit and finish as the trapper, but still pretty darn good. The blades don't quite have the nice snap on opening or closing. And the dye job was not well matched on the jigged bone scales. But I really like carrying it. It's light and easy in the pocket. Didn't think I'd really care for it. I only got it because SMKW didn't have the mini-sunfish I wanted.

The mini-canoe is perhaps the disappointment to me. While I adore the saw cut bone and fluted bolsters. The fit and finish isn't as good as the other two. There is a .004" gap in the back springs on one end. And the a small .0015" between the brass liner and one bolster. (Hey, as a machinist, I measure:)). I know it's not going to prevent it from being a good user. It's just I was hoping that it would be as good the trapper. It's a good slicer though. With a .045 thick main spear point blade it sliced through a cardboard box, a foil pouch, and 2" thick styrofoam with ease. I will continue to carry it, though perhaps not as often as others.

All in all, I like my new knives. Rough Rider provides me with inexpensive slippies to expand my horizons all the while making a good solid knife. Could you imagine if RR offered plain carbon steel at these prices?

They do. The cinnamon bone stag line is all carbon

I saw that after I posted, lol.
Yeah. I almost told him to count his blessings he didn't get the baby sunfish. Everyone I've talked to that has one has the same issue I had on mine: The secondary blade has a "15" plus blade pull. It is necessary to pry the blade up enough to grab it with pliers.
Of course prying the blade up with a screwdriver is murder on the edge ...🙄

Huh. They must have used 3 different blade steels on different patterns of the series. 🤯😳
Lernt something "new". 😇👍
I knew some have stainless Damascus blades, and some have 440A. I Never knew some have T10.
(SMKW did not tell me which stainless steels were used to make their Damascus.)

Nice! I haven’t seen any with stainless or Damascus. I’d be interested to see one of both!

I really like the all copper series, but there's not many options. Hopefully they'll do some more!

C Carboniferous you might try loosening the pins a little by pushing back and forth on the sides of the blades. I've had some pinned a little too tight and made the action feel sluggish. The only thing that might help though is use.
Steve, that's a handsome assortment of RRs with"unusual" covers you've posted! :thumbsup::cool::thumbsup:
I have a copper swirl canoe like your sowbelly stockman, and a sowbelly stockman like your faux tortoiseshell whittler, in the first post. I like them a lot, especially the copper swirl. (Actually, your copper swirl looks nicer, more swirly, than mine.)

In your second post, your trio looks great. I have a couple of knives with the buckshot bone covers like your Barlow in the middle; mine are a canoe and a spear/pen teardrop jack (that might actually be branded Colt, before that maker went out of business). I don't have anything like your coppery Barlow or colorful curved trapper (?), but they look good to me.

I often find that seeing photos of RR models here gives me a much better idea of how they look than the images on a website.

Thanks for the compliments Gary! I do lean towards unusual in general. I love the diversity of Rough Ryder.

I recently picked up up a very inexpensive light box and it makes my pictures look a lot better. These all look pretty true to life. I absolutely love the copper swirl, along with that Barlow which has copper pins and liners as well. I think it's called Backwoods. They are starting to patina.... Love it when they start to turn!

Your canoe looks great! The pattern on yours is what I was expecting with another knife in the Celestial covers, but it arrived more like my sowbelly stockman. I also think your tortoiseshell looks much better than mine!

I really like the buckshot bone as well..... And I found the teardrop with it. 😬

That rainbow is a sowbelly trapper. They call it lollipop..... I think I 'need' a Copperhead in those pants! Everyone needs a rainbow knife! 😀

Then you can play this song!

Totally off the point, but Slim Whitman did what I consider to be the best vocal version of “Ghost Riders in the Sky”.

Here's one I've had for some years and enjoy, an unusual pattern the Eureka Stockman a small but credible knife 3 3/8" with very good F&F. Also have one in Yellow Delrin but all my RR knives in this have developed centre pin cracks soon after arrival. I hear some people say CASE Yellow D can do the same, odd o_O
