Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Amazing deal ! $8.50 each, including shipping. I've gotten some super good deals on RR knives, but i think you got The Best Deal Ever. And every knife is decent, actually, better than decent what with the half sunk joints etc.
Thanks for showing them. I do like these RR knives.

I just got in 6 RRs from a single order, all new in the box, for $52.62 including shipping! The quality for the $$ is amazing, and seems to get better each year.
Out of 18 total blades: three rubs, two not shaving sharp. Out of 19 liners: six show the tiniest light, with no glaring gaps (nobody would notice these without REALLY looking).

Nearly all of the blades have completely sunken joints, no exposed blade tips, and the fitting of the scales to the frames are very tight and square, no gaps. Nicks are easy
to use, nicely placed and executed. If you didn't know where they were made and how little they cost, I think anyone would be proud to carry any of the six.

They really are VERY nice knives, and no better way to try out a different pattern or size.

I have one of those stock knives in yellow delrin and it's one of my favorite RR, I carry it to work all the time and like the sheep foot blade as the main blade ( if that's what you got) .

They make another variation that looks like a reverse gunstock.

I recently got a large Remington branded stockman, the frame looks like it was made in the same factory as a RR , but the blades are swedged unlike anything I've seen on a RR. I'll try to take a picture.

I'd like to see pics of your "Remington" and RR together, blades closed and blades open, and a pic looking down into the well, blades closed.

I'll try to get one posted between now and Saturday, it's a pretty impressive knife about the size of the largest stockman that RR makes. It even has stag scales, but in keeping with the Remington colors they dyed the scales green ( and I wish they hadn't ).

Jeff, I really like the look of that Barlow Jack, not seen this before must be a new one. It's on my search list now

Right you are, these are decent quality and useful trial knives OR workers. I know some people want to assert that they will all fall to bits and are blunt, warped scales etc. Not been my experience in three years of buying them anyway!

Regards, Will

RR Tobacco Bone Sowbelly Stockman

I really like theese knives. Good and great workers with pretty cool handles. The steel is pretty good. I think RR makes a good work on their HT.

Kind regards

Here's a few pictures of the Remington stockman I bought. I think it cost around $20 with stag scales.

IMO it would have looked better with more natural looking scales and a green enamel shield ( in keeping with Remington's colors) It's about the same size as the RR large stockman and it's constructed similarly ( except all the swedges).

Excuse the poor pictures....

Seems quite possible Remingtons and RR come from the same place. I noticed that RR and Colt slipjoints look to come from the same place. Two online vendors carry this new-ish model. Both were sold as RR1193 "Once In A Blue Moon" Moose model. Notice a difference in the tang stamps?

Yes very similar, the only difference I can see is the match striker pull on the rr and the pinched bolsters on the colt.

how thick is it too? I know my old english straight razor is thin as a piece of paper in the front body of the blade...not joking either! problem with chinese made razors is they seem to make the profile too thick.

I got a peanut, stockman and copperhead in the mail today. All 3 knives have gaps but they're not horrendous. Blades not centered on the peanut, but they were halfway sharp. The little rivets weren't peened properly so two of them stick out more than they should. Blades not centered on the stockman, only the sheepsfoot was remotely sharp. On the copperhead the blades are centered but were really dull. Grinds were uneven on a lot of the blades, especially with poorly ground tips.

I sharpened them all up. The peanut took a nice edge, the others not so much. Overall they're flawed but I expected it for the money. I wanted to try out a few designs. I'll carry the peanut but the others I'll probably just give away. They're low end knives. I know people talk up Rough Rider, SRM, and other Chinese knives but so far I'm unimpressed, even for the money. I might hang on to these a while and see if I like them more down the road, but for now they're going to sit in a box.

Sounds like you got some early models,or stuff they were throwing in the dumpsters?
Probably an employee that works there is sneaking out to the dumpster at break and grabbing
all the junk and sending it over here thru one of his buddies that is selling to whomever you bought from.
I have yet to find a rr that is so bad I could bad lip for the money...I do know there out here, but
i honestly believe that they were not supposed to be sold to the public....
may be wrong, but it does seem like someone slipped you some dudlys.
You thought you were getting a deal when you really got the shaft.
Sorry to hear that, even if it isn't from quality controlled US made knife.

JD - Colt has a Rail Spliter that is superbly made.

Regarding "Black Widow" razor i posted above. I have not tried it. I have never tried a 'real' razor like this so i'm worried about getting too much blood on the bathroom floor. I have a few vintage straight razors (Henckels, Wostenholm, etc) and they are "paper thin" at the edge. This RR is not quite that thin but it is hair poppin' sharp.
It needs to be tried by someone with straight razor experience for assessment. My guess is, that like the RR knives, it's ability to cut(shave) is better than expected.

I couldn't agree more. It's a beefey knife that feels substantial in the hand. Very well made and it makes a great EDC for when I'm in the mood for a thick and hefty knife. The Stag Bone scales have a very interesting look and texture.

A strange thing happened to me while I was visiting Smoky Mountain Knife Works last fall. The employees that were working at the Colt counter told me that Colt never made a Railsplitter. (they had none in stock at the time) I told them that I have one at home but they still held their ground. I couldn't believe that not only had these guys not heard of a Colt Railsplitter but they swore that they don't exist. They must have thought I was some kind of wannabe that had no idea what I was talking about. I left there feeling like I was in the Twilight Zone.

I did some investigating when I got back home and, thanks to a freind from another forum, I discovered that SMKW lists this knife as a "Rancher Stockman".

I still call it a Railsplitter and I always will.:)

Okay, I drank the Kool Aid and ordered five Rough Riders, three stockmen patterns, a toothpick and a utility (scout) pattern. They arrived today and I am pleasantly surprised. Some are sharper than others, but considering I got five knives and a diamond hone for $55 including shipping, I consider it money well spent. I'm flying to Phoenix in a couple of weeks with a carry-on, so I'm going to send a Rough Rider to my hotel, hold for arrival. When I'm ready to come home, I'll tip the bellboy with it.

I like the Scout. The bellboy won't get that one. My dad, who passed in 2007 at 93, carried a scout pattern on our ranch. Never left the house without that knife in his back pocket, snapped to a leather lanyard. He also wouldn't leave home without a Marble's match safe and his Colt Woodsman. The fit and finish on all five knives is much better than I expected. I'll sharpen them up and see how they hold an edge.

Have you used the Scout enough to have an impression of how it will hold up?
