Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

Nice knives, guys. These are a lot of fun to collect.

This Fat Boy Trapper just showed up. Here's a comparison shot with my RR finger-groove 4-1/8" trapper.

I have noticed that on some bolsters the groove either does not continue all the way to the edge, or varies in depth at some point. I have not yet bought a RR (I live in SA) but am thinking about it and obviously, I will be unable to sort through a bunch of knives in order to pick out the best one, but will have to rely on what I receive through the mail. Should I receive one of those knives where the grooves are uneven or don't match each other 100%, would it be possible to touch them up with a file in order to get the grooves to match each other?

First.. welcome to BladeForums!

As far as what you are seeing with the grooves, remember that you are looking at photos taken by us, and while some are gifted photographers, some like me, are just acceptable. So the photos you see may not give a 100% true rendition of what you are getting, especially if the poster is just trying to show a new model or a comparison to another model.

And yes, you can take a needle file or something similar to finish up the grooves if you so desire. Sometimes even on the best of knives these decorative grooves get buffed out too much and they lose their definition.

I wouldn't worry too much one way or another. On one hand, these knives seem to represent a tremendous value and a really low price, so I don't think perfection is really their goal when making them. But... since they are so affordable, I wouldn't have any trouble at all filing or grinding on one to make it the knife I wanted.

Thanks for your reply, Robert, I wanted to make sure the bolsters were not thin pressed material where a file might just go right through. I am looking to get a model RR1073, but I also like the RR1074. Must still make up my mind!

The bolsters are solid NS, you could file them without problem.

Have placed my order for an RR1073 with a seller on ebay because he advertised it for $14.05 and charged only $9.95 to ship it to SA. He also clearly states whether knives are factory seconds and sells them for less so there is no reason to expect a less than perfect knife. Some dealers use the shipping to make a profit. One fellow advertised the knife for $6.95 but wanted $135 to ship it and many want $20 to $30 to ship. I have never seen Rough Rider knives advertised in SA, but used Schrades are sold at about 15% to 30% more than I paid for this one. It will probably take about 3 weeks to get here.

Anyone carry one?

I've been wanting to pick up a Case XX in Yellow with cv but my funds have been kind of tight this month. I thought about buying one of these RR's and give it a whirl while waiting on the Case.

How do these RR's stand up to use?

I posted about my experience with one in the Rough Rider thread (that seemed to set off moderator alarm bells, FWIW). A fake tortoiseshell model. It was very uncharacteristically, glaringly malfunctioning. All other RR knives I have have been very good.

The vendor of that malfunctioning knife, upon hearing of the problem, very graciously replaced it without me even asking. The replacement is perfectly functioning, and nearly flawless like every other RR I own.

I like my Rough Rider kinves, I bought seven to try out different designs, really liking the canoe. May get a Case or or some other made in the USA knife, but don't really need to due to the RR's holding up fine. I also would like carbon steel blades.

I collect many different knives from different makers and RR makes a Great knife and not just because they are cheap, way too cheap IMO. They make great lock backs but for my money the best trapper they make is the Jumbo trapper.
Here's a pic of a jumbo in their barnboard bone.

Best regards

Carbon steel is coming from RR fairly soonish ;-))) They are doing pattern designs as we speak.

I buy them to kill them since I can't afford to do that to my collectors. So far the Scout and the imitation Case 6217 have been good. The sunfish and double lockback self destructed after a light workout. For the money buy the one you want and see how it does.

Since this has morphed into general comments on RR, I will be merging this with that thread.

Any word on when they're likely to be launched?

Jack

Hi Jack, I've been bugging them to tell me but they're not saying much about the launch date. They are working on patterns so I started making pattern suggestions ;-)))

Best regards

Good work Robin  I'm sure you'll keep us informed :) It'll be interesting to see what steel they settle on using.

Thanks for the update :)

I'm gonna be very enthused about these carbon steel Rough Riders, if they aren't just rebranded "Cattleman's Cutlery" knives, that are in 1065 carbon. I'm glad to see them making progress. They'll be a hit if done right. Blacksheep72, I've been hankering for one of those finger groove trappers, for some time now. Yours looks excellent, they do a grand job with the red bone.

Thanks! I really like it, too. I've got a red sowbelly, too, that is one of my favorites. The newer red bone is very nice. I bought an older RR red sowbelly that was a brighter red. It almost looked painted. Didn't like it at all. I'll probably use that to experiment with putting new scales on.
