Rough Ryder Bow Trapper

I passed on this one. Props to RR for the classy shield and not putting that goofy R on the bolster. But nearly everything else i dislike. Just not my pattern.

- was looking at something similar a few weeks ago on our biggest knife retailer website here in UK.......Tobacco Road Bow Trapper

Have this one on order and should be here very soon. There are carbon bladed ones too, but I'm not a fan of the patina, so 440C it is.

My only apprehension with this is the writing all over the blades - not a fan of writing on blades or big logos either :D but we'll see.

These RR knives do appear extraordinary vfm, and I'm looking forward to reviewing it.

J johnnywizzo Thanks for the heads up on availability. Ordered on Friday and received today, National Knife Day.

Now that it's in hand I can say it reminds me of a slimmer saddlehorn. Here are the typical specs everyone wants to know. It's 3 7/8" closed. The blade is centered and sharp. All transitions are smooth. It has a half stop and the backspring is flush when open and closed and just slightly proud at half stop. The pull is softer than their swayback, I'd say about a 5. The closing talk is a satisfactory 'snap.' I'm not a big fan of the matchstrike nail nick but it does help make the blade pinchable. Oh, the red G-10 underliner is nice. I think the lanyard tube is narrower than normal if that matters to you.

I kinda like the looks of this one, it appears that it should nestle quite comfy in pocket. I have never tried a RR but this one has me very curious to do so.

I love the knife but I hate the small diameter lanyard hole. But Andy at SMKW designed this knife and he says that a lanyard is only for decoration. I like to attach paracord with a large bead or a monkey's fist to give it some weight and let the end hang out of my pocket. It makes the knife readily accessible and keeps it vertical in the front pocket. If you're going to make a lanyard hole, why not make it big enough to accept standard paracord? Just the same, it is a very nice knife!

........well, can't quite believe it. It arrived in the post today.

What an amazing knife for the money. Love the weight and the feel of it. Fit n finish - ok, not as good as many, obviously - but certainly puts many, many others in the shade.

What I really cannot believe, is, just ordered four more...

Mine came Monday, I guess. Thanks Joe and Johnny for the tips on availability. Joe’s description is perfect except that my spring is very, very slightly sunken when closed, and flush in the other two positions. So it’s not perfect, but the fit and finish are brilliant, as is the design. A trailing point is not usually my style, but I like the way the sweep of the blade continues the curve of the handle.

So I spoke too soon. I thought I had the last one from the original stock but they canceled my order.

I saw on the youtube channel that one of the workers came in and asked for 2 knives and he apologized that he got the last 2 that were meant for customers so Im assumkng that one of those was mine... Or maybe it was just a computer error but who knows.

I put a notify me alert on and last week it popped up but the blade was no longer the T10 carbon but 440A now. I grabbed one luckily cause they were gone the next day.

Next day get another alert, denim work knife back in stock so I grabbed one of those too. Got both in this week work knife was beautiful.

The Upswept trapper appeared to be used like they sent me a return or something not sure how this would be possible but it was definetly in someones hands. The blade had finger prints all over it and a hair stuck to it where someone had tested the blade. The shield is scratched and the handle was fingerprinted too and had two spots of rust/oxidation on the back of the liner and tool marks on the front end of the knife (sorry not firmiliar with the name of this part).

All in all I wasn't happy with the way this knife came to me but I don't dare sendnit back as it's already out of stock again. Plus lets be honest, it's a $13 dollar knife and as annoying as it was to get a new knife that someone else had obviously already been handling, Id rather keep it instead of waiting for a new batch.
