Coming in late here.

I'm the guy in Australia that Will mentioned.

The Khukuri I was using was an early GH Bhojpure model, not a HI villager.

I used it to cut through the spines of two kagaroos (one large, one small) and take the feet off the hind legs.

It ended up with some chips, from memory several large ones about 2-3mm long and 1 mm deep and quite a few smaller ones.

With a bit of work on a stone I got them out and now use the blade for general duties/gardening.

Uncle Bill,
I checked the archives to make sure my memory wasn't playing tricks - the khukuri Cliff tested was the "worst of the lot" of a dozen nearly identical villagers you described as "ugly ducklings" and sold for $35!. I can't tell you how many times that much work and enjoyment I've gotten out of mine in the past year. Last weekend I was using the spine of that villager to hammer some loose nails back into a boat dock, and my brother (who I fear uses the shiny Shop 1 BAS I gave him mostly as a wall-hanger

) cried out in horror! I just looked at him sorrowfully and went on with the work at hand, village khukuri none the worse for the experience.

Wrong Friend: your comment on savoring the true taste of Mercedes....

Heading home from Reno last time I tailgated a car with an odd personalized license plate.

The plate said: OH LORD

The bottom of the
plate holder said: won't you buy me

Even if you can't guess the car's make the kamis coulda tasted it.

"Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz,
My friends all drive Porsche's, I must make amends..."

As a recall.... My "Beloved Pet" khukuri is out of that same lot of villagers. I had pollished it up real nice, but gave up after awhile, now I just clean and sharpen it. I use the other ones harder, but this is the one that is with me about 90% of the time, day and night.

I, too, have an ugly duckling villager. Its a 15"er, none too pretty, but its a veritable tank. For those of you who saw the thread, its the one my wife used to attack the overgrown fence in our backyard. She destroyed a pair of cheap hedge-clippers on that same job, grew frustrated, and ran and got my khukuri. She dinged up the blade by hitting concrete and/or bricks a couple of times, but it was nothing that the chakma couldn't put to rights. The damn thing will still cut paper (though not in the dinged spots...I'll have to get a strop, I suppose).

And hey, talk about synchronicity...as I type this the city trash truck is FINALLY hauling away the last dumpsterfull of the debris she created (and graciously left for me to dispose).

Hey, what IS the best way to polish these blades? hints for both hard-core polishing (like on the villager) and touch-up (a few very small mars on the blade of my Sirupati) would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

I owe Uncle Bill an apology. Thanks, correcting my memory Andre I will edit my initial post to reflect that it was the other khukuri that chipped.

I was out target shooting with my .375 H&H. When I returned to the cottage I found a large snake sitting in front of the garage. If I were to straighten him, he would have been about 5-6 ft. We don’t have poisonous snakes around here and usually snakes are quite small. In the end I left him alone as he was not hurting anything and would have helped to keep the mice population down. I hope he was not someone’s escaped pet rattle snake (it didn’t have a rattle).

Target shooting with a .375 Ouch & Ouch...... Hmmmmmmmmm..... I'll bet you use an 18" AK to sharpen penciles too!

Bruce,

Thanks for the info. Duly noted. Leg removal by khukuri will be for "showmanship" purposes only.

Khukuris have worked okay on cow bones and I have mail from the field from guys who have used khukuri to butcher deer. If the HI khukuri fails on the deer I'll replace it.

Why? Go through the joint. Take a look at the pictures of a dogs structure and study the joints, you will see what I mean. "A dog?", Ya, 'cuz it's easy to find pictures at any Vet's. and it's not so easy to find them of a deer. I've taken them apart with a pocket knife.

Will, old friend, old buddy old pal - You don't happen to have any pet reduced loads, maybe about 3400 or 3500 ft lbs do you? I was out cleaning the garage this afternoon and found a few old 35 Brown-Whelen loads for my old Atkinson barreled 03A3 ( now long gone ).

25 years ago I hated the 458 and my neck arthritis wasn't nearly as bad as now. Been waffling tween a cz in 9.3x62(mannlicher stock) or one in 375 with a standard stock.

Wonder if the megasalyan would cut recoil if you mounted it as a bayonet? ( obligatory knife reference )

Some people are alive simply because it is illegal to kill them.

And there are now some rattleless rattlesnakes in Northern Nevada according to the indins I've talked to, who are wondering when the things are going to be recognised. Then again, there are some indins who think the sasquatch is still out there ( inside 35 or so miles from here )...
