Round Yorkshire With A Knife: A Visit To The Famous Sheffield Shop

As always I enjoyed reading of your travels. Regardless the weather what a great time that must have been. Thanks for sharing it with us here.

Chris

What a delicious display of knives! Paul Iseard is to be commended for his passion, and his efforts to keep the soul of Sheffield alive.
Thanks for bringing us a little glimpse of knife heaven, Jack!
I for one, feel uplifted and elated!:)

Thanks Chris and Charlie :)

Charlie, that's where your buffalo horn Ettrick came from

The top row of this pic melted the snow right off my beard as my pulse

Paul does seem to get the cream of the crop from the local manufacturers. After a recent disappointment with the stag on an Arthur Wright knife I was gifted, I was somewhat envious of the stag on the knives Paul had from the firm.

Cheers mate. Yes, the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet Museum has just been re-vamped and re-opened. I did a thread (before the re-vamp) about it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1105366-A-Visit-To-Abbeydale-Industrial-Hamlet Hope you enjoyed your visit and I'm glad your trip to Sheffield wasn't wasted. That's a nice Ablett  I got one from there myself, I was very lucky as the museum had only just recently re-opened and they hadn't put the prices up from before it closed! :)

Thanks Paul, the shop is just across the road from where your Grandad used to live :)

Thanks Gary, yeah, I think they'd have a job getting us all out of there! :D I visited a while back with my daughter - she had a lot of fun! :D

This is exactly the kind of thing I love about your posts Jack, they are always interesting, have great photos, and amazing knives.:thumbup::thumbup: The ‘The Famous Sheffield Shop’ is on my bucket list of places to visit and I am glad you found someone in Sheffield that loves knives as much as you do. I really hope Paul Iseard does post here in the future. :D

Thanks a lot Dave, I hope that we get a chance to visit together one day

Thanks for taking me along on your trip Jack.

When I was a boy, you didn’t have to look far to find a pocket-knife in Sheffield. Virtually every newsagent’s shop had one or more colourful card displays hanging up next to the plastic combs and razor-blades, with elastic bands holding Richards clamshell knives. If you wanted something better, there was no shortage of small cutlery shops, with window displays for a lad to drool over. Knives of all types could be found almost everywhere in the city, I remember a cobbler’s shop which sold a great selection of Bowie knives for example, and every tobacconist, hardware store, fishing-tackle shop, and men’s outfitters sold pocket-knives.

Today, things have changed a lot, and a visitor to the city whose name graced millions of pocket-knives, will be hard pushed to find so much as a penknife for sale, unless they know where to look.

Change is inevitable, but this makes me sad.

Thanks Phil, it's a cracker isn't it? I wonder if the pattern has a name, and what it was mainly used for?

The handle shape and what looks like a convex grind lead me to think it's some sort of outdoors knife? Heavy duty machete or something, maybe?

Thanks Chris and Charlie :)

Charlie, that's where your buffalo horn Ettrick came from

And I am ever grateful that a man with a good eye selected it for me! When you can't be there, that's what good friends are for!
Always ready to return the favor, Jack!!
