Great thread Jack:thumbup: always interesting and informative...I'm like you and could've stayed all day![]()
Thanks for the kind words guys

Paul does seem to get the cream of the crop from the local manufacturers. After a recent disappointment with the stag on an Arthur Wright knife I was gifted, I was somewhat envious of the stag on the knives Paul had from the firm.
Cheers mate. Yes, the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet Museum has just been re-vamped and re-opened. I did a thread (before the re-vamp) about it here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1105366-A-Visit-To-Abbeydale-Industrial-Hamlet Hope you enjoyed your visit and I'm glad your trip to Sheffield wasn't wasted. That's a nice Ablett  I got one from there myself, I was very lucky as the museum had only just recently re-opened and they hadn't put the prices up from before it closed!

A super read Jack! Thanks for taking the time to post that, it's great to see there's life in the Sheffield veins yet!![]()
Thanks for sharing your visit, Jack. That's quite a shop!
When I was a boy, you didnt have to look far to find a pocket-knife in Sheffield. Virtually every newsagents shop had one or more colourful card displays hanging up next to the plastic combs and razor-blades, with elastic bands holding Richards clamshell knives. If you wanted something better, there was no shortage of small cutlery shops, with window displays for a lad to drool over. Knives of all types could be found almost everywhere in the city, I remember a cobblers shop which sold a great selection of Bowie knives for example, and every tobacconist, hardware store, fishing-tackle shop, and mens outfitters sold pocket-knives.
Today, things have changed a lot, and a visitor to the city whose name graced millions of pocket-knives, will be hard pushed to find so much as a penknife for sale, unless they know where to look.
Thanks Phil, it's a cracker isn't it? I wonder if the pattern has a name, and what it was mainly used for?
Thanks Chris and Charlie:thumbup:
Charlie, that's where your buffalo horn Ettrick came from
