As to Ht:
Quench in water or brine, and temper at 350F to relieve stress. A temper is recommended for any steel that is quenched.

For how long? How many cycles? Would 1 hour, 1 cycle be good?
I think I'll be quenching in a brine mixture of water, salt, and dish soap. Read that brine quenches a lot faster than just plain water. Thanks for your reply.

Since it is mainly a stress relieving temper ( no retained austenite to convert, and not a lot of martensite to temper) one hour one cycle will do it. Two hours is standard for tempering, though.

dunno about the rest

To color them I heat and dip in oil a couple of times. Temperature doesn't seem to be a factor. Leaves a black coating that holds up well.
Just what I do, Lynn
