Rubicon available for pre-order!

Maybe if they start making some commercials about it with a British actor with a big sign in the background saying "Don't Buy the RUBICON"
Maybe more people will say Yes to them ;)

I don't fancy liner locks or flippers. But this Rubicon just looks so nice. I may pick one up.

Being a production model, it's my general advice to wait and not preorder. Yes, you won't be the first to snag one, and you may have to keep your eyes open for 6 months or so, but you'll find these for under 300 at some point if you're quick on the trigger.

I just wanted to relate my personal experience with getting too antsy with production models only to see them for $40 cheaper down the road.

S30v and made in Taiwan at that price, I just can't see the value even with the shiny cf scales and ti liners.

3 bills? I can name 10 knives that I'd rather get than this, and with true premium steels. Gorgeous blade and all, but I'll pass. I could buy another Southard with cash left over, or be close to the money for a new safety-less S&W Shield that I got my eye on.

This one is top on my list. Time will tell if it's priced too high. I initially thought that the Southard was priced too high. It's proven to be very popular.

It looks really nice, and if I have $300 dollars lying around when they are out I would probably get one. However for some reason the Firefly appeals to me more. Just flows a little better in my mind.

3 things:

-The cost of a knife might be due to processes and factors that you are unaware of.
-The steel used in a knife does not correlate very well with its price. There are "mid-techs" that are far more expensive with S30V/S35VN.
-America is not the only country that pays skilled craftsmen a fair wage.

Why do these things come up every time Spyderco offers a high-end Taichung model?

Good points. I think maybe people bring it up is because that high end keeps getting higher every year. I wonder just how high it can climb until the market won't support it any longer? Either way it's a fascinating study.

I guess I'm just confused as to what "the market" is. There are people jumping all over second-hand "mid-tech" (production) Hinderers for $500+ on here, so clearly price itself (as it relates to quality of materials) is not an issue. Perception, perhaps? Because Sal does not personally know the people assembling "his" knife? I'm not knocking Hinderers in any way, it's just a comparable example in my mind: based on a custom, similar materials, etc. I just think Spyderco is pushing the boundaries of what a production company can do; the quality costs money, but I think the final products back it up. It just seems like people are much more amenable to pay for "mid techs" from a custom maker than they are to pay for "mid tech" quality knives from a "production" company.

I only use the annoying quotes because the boundary between mid tech and production is unclear.

Because I truly don't see the value there...

Since Hinderer has been mentioned and to me the Rubicon slightly resembles a ZT I will list a ZT Hinderer design for value comparison.

Zero Tolerance 0562CF: Titanium frame lock, CF handle, M390 steel blade, KVT Ball-Bearing, Hinderer design, Made in USA....only $240

Why does the Rubicon cost more again? Looks like a great knife but the price seems about $100 too high. I'm only one customer, so even if I don't buy I guess Spyderco has the fan base and demand to sell it anyway so it doesn't matter.

How much did the Southard retail for when first introduced.

The fairly recently released Southard Black with an MSRP of $439.95 had (and still has at some dealers) a street price of around $275-$280 when first released. Just over the July 4th holidays you could get it for $230 shipped from KnifeWorks. It pays to wait.

Additionally, Southard is quite a popular model even at its price. The Chaparral Stepped Titanium which is another expensive model just isn't selling even though the street price went from $360 to $300.

Undoubtedly, Rubicon will have a bigger following than the Chaparral Stepped Titanium but many won't buy one for $300!

Nice design, but it is a bit steep for me as well. Flipper/liner lock with 3 inch S30V HG blade doesn't do for me. As many others pointing out, I will consider it when it goes near $200....

3.5" S110V / M390 FFG, I can go for $200 for just for the blade alone.. Well sort of....

Seems like most people who are on the fence about the Rubicon are on the fence because of the steel choice.

I'm not into carbon fiber very much, but I think most people would agree that with almost ANY steel "above" S30V (M390, S90V, M4, 204P, 3V, hell even S35VN or Elmax probably) a lot of the fence-sitters might be persuaded to jump on this one.
But that's at this same price point.
$300 is carbon fiber ZT territory, so people wanna see something besides S30V. Just my opinion.

The Rubicon is listed for $257 at New Graham, and under $300 a couple other places I saw for preorder.

People have made reference to the fact that the Rubicon being made in Tai Chung is a negative. But I have found time and time again that the Tai Chung made Spydercos are exquisite in build quality ,design and f&f.

I absolutely love my Golden made Spydercos but my Tai Chungs so far have matched them on every level. So I consider the Tai Chung factor to be a big plus.

I couldlnt really care less where my Spyderco's are made. I figure if the owner of a large company is going to take time to get online and answer questions/ mingle with us common people he cares enough not to let junk get sold with his name attached. And all but one of my knives have been perfect.

For me it boils down to cost. It is just not worth $200 plus for me no matter how nice it is.
