Rude members

I also think that there is a perception, on the buyers side, that if they do back out. . .they will be severely berated via e-mail or in some other form ~ ~ ~ like on the GB&U.

I've sold bought and sold quite a few knives on this forum.

And yes, there have been a few. . .and I mean very few. . .instances where I wasn't able to complete the transaction. But. . .I've always communicated such to the buyer. . .immediately.

And there have been instances where a buyer has stated, "sold, It's mine, come home to papa, etc." and then never heard from nor seen again (at least on the forums that I visit).

More unfortunate. . .there have also been a few, that are "known" on the forums, who have told me that they will get back with me. Never to be heard from again. Then again. . .they never said "when they would."

The communication process of e-mail is definitely a weird thing ! In that. . .a majority of us don't know each other. We stroll through the halls of this forum on reputation and a common thread that binds us ~ ~ ~ knives. There is a certain amount of "risk taking" when we deal with others on this, or any other, forum. Especially, if the other person isn't well known.

About all you can do is provide the necessary info in the for sale/trade thread and attempt to answer all of the buyers/traders questions.

If the deal pans out. . .be :D

If I don't hear from the person. . .be :D

Personally. . .I'd rather someone not complete the deal. . .instead of them shorting me ! Fate can be a very good thing.

I wish that I was issued ESP when I was born. :( Instead. . .I have to rely on ESPN. :p ;) :D

(Grumble, grumble ... this is not a good thread to get involved in ... as emotions run high  )

I like to do a little research myself, check out the price of a knife, look at a picture -- sometimes the sellers even post all this information, bless them. If I don't know the man I even go to his profile and click on the link to prior posts, and read for a sense of what kind of person I'm dealing with.

I've had a couple of rough experiences recently, strictly delays in the mail, and I never had to worry about the guy on the other end. One of them was totally new to me and in a different country, and I never mistrusted him.

If you aren't that sure of the person you're dealing with, e-mail your regrets and deal with someone else, right away. If they aren't real responsive in e-mail, what are you gonna do once you've sent them your money or your knife?

As far as when the deal's a deal, it's when everyone's got what's coming to them and says they're happy. Until then, I will let anyone back out at any time, but, yes, I expect a respectful and timely notice that they can't meet their commitment.

Sheesh. Anyone who gets cpirtle upset is really a loser. Chad's got to be the easiest man to deal with on these forums. :)

While we are venting our spleens, here's a few:

Doing an "email sent" post, when you really aren't interested in getting the knife. This happens a lot on hot knives that people admire, wish they owned, but don't have the funds for. It's a sort of love connection thing.

Marking a thread For Sale Only and then getting trade offers flooding in.

Repeatedly reduced the cost of the knife to the ridiculous and then getting inquiries looking to beat you down further.

Replying to posts that say opinonated things about the product being sold, as though it were in a discussion forum, possibly opening up the knife to an unfair view by other interested onlookers, spoiling a possible sale to someone else.

This is an interesting thread to me, so i'll chime in.

There is no set standard, and there shouldn't be. Each and every case is different, just like people are different.

Knife buying is a particular and peculiar hobby. I think that people have a right to change their minds, but SHOULD be doing so very quickly, IF they have a sense of fair play.

Key and operative word, here, fair play. Do unto others and blah, blah. If you are a D**K, you deserve to get treated like one.

If you can't afford the cost of the hobby in the manner that you want to, and you insist on being involved in it, you should be buying at a rate that you CAN afford to lose, or have tied up for an unspecified amount of time. Trying to turn knives quickly for a profit, or to free up some cash for more knives in a hurry was, is and probably always will be a frustrating excercise, and requires an awful lot of luck/knowledge. This hobby was built around enjoyment, initially, people curious to learn about what could be done with metal, and those who appreciated thier efforts. As time moved on, some made very unhobbylike profits, both makers, and sellers, and things got very serious, with some.

The forums are a way in many cases, for it to be fun again, to be simpler and less profit oriented. That is the best use of it in my opinion. FWIW, I just bought my first knife on the Forums, from Boink, and was real happy with the deal. I don't know him, but I would buy another knife from him, and that is the best that I have to say about anyone.
