I took a hike last Saturday that I like to do at least once a year, it's at a pretty popular spot in NW Oregon called Saddle Mt. the namesake of a Benchmade knife. Had the wife and pup with me and ran across some people with dogs too, we were on the way up and them down. We talked dogs for a minute before I commented on his neck knife ( and ESEE Izula 2 with a sweet mustard patina ) showed him my Busse TGLB. Come to find out he was a BF member, we exchanged handles and must have chatted a good 20 minutes on the trail. Kinda cool.

Just wondering if anyone else has similar stories.

I rarely find anyone that is a "knife person" in public. They sometimes have a relatively nice knife and comment that it was a gift or they thought it looked cool. The last few guys I met that had a Kershaw/Benchmade/Spyderco didn't even know what blade steel the knife had. That's fine, because they use their knife for what it was intended to do, but they aren't exactly "knife people."

I rarely look at anyone's pockets for a knife anymore.

My favorite encounter with knife people actually occurred in a college lab classroom. I was in a group with 3 other students and we had some tubing that was dry rotted on one end and we decided it needed to be cut. One girl went to find scissors. Almost simultaneoualy, I pulled out my rat 1, the other guy took out a kershaw blur, and the other girl in our group opens a buck marksman. It was something along the lines of kismet. (Technically, knives aren't allowed on campus. Shhh...)

I was in an HVAC supply house yesterday and saw a clip in a guy's pocket. We talked knives for a few minutes and it was really cool! First time that happened to me.
He had a Spydie Tenacious and I had my Cruwear Millie and a 705......he wanted to trade!!! NOT!!! Nice sense of humor!!!

we don't have a lot of knife people here in new york. we DO have a lot of sheeple and scared little rabbits, though:D

I can't remember the last time I saw anyone carrying something other than flea market junk.

So I don't even bother.

Ratman79 - I have to wonder why New York's lawmakers are so, un-American? I would never want to be so restricted. My condolences friend.

My small town gas station started selling the most gimmicky and tacky MTech knives you can imagine for $15 each. Half the young punks I see have those now. The station manager can't even figure out why they are selling. I'd love to meet some with some actual blade knowledge though.

The only knife thing I can remember here in the widerness was seeing an obvious outsider .His "lightbulb suit " flourescent orange had a belt with a 4" sheath with a 6" knife in it !! LOL I never said a word.

Ran into a guy at my church with a Strider SNG. Ended up he and I are on a couple of the same forums.

Its happened quite a few times.

At my wedding last summer, one of my best friends growing up, drove up from St. Louis. He was carrying a Kershaw Blur clipped to his tux.

Couple years ago, I was at my grandfathers former secretary's 90th birthday party. Her grandson was there, who I had seen since I was maybe 15, he was carrying a CS Recon 1. It had been through four tours in the middle east, and four years as a fire fighter. I noticed the clip, and asked him. If you need proof that Cold Steel makes a good knife, there you go.

The BEST story I have was the most unexpected. I had bought my cousin's husband a Kershaw Emerson for being a new father. This one had a crazy strong detent, and I was showing him how to wave it, and it stuck, halfway open, in my pocket. Reached in, that tight detent snapped closed on my middle finger. If it my hand hadn't gone in at an angle, it would have cut my finger off at the last knuckle. While getting it stitched together (it was bad) I noticed a clip on the doc's pocket. Naturally I asked him if it was a knife. He says yes, but its not a knife you see much, as its discontinued. He pull out a well loved Spyderco leafstorm.

Ha! A knife story leading to another knife story. That's cool. Sounds like you had a pretty knife day. :p

Okay, that was a lame pun, but your story is still interesting.

I've tried on several occasions to start up a knife conversation based on a clip seen, or a knife noticed in-use, but it usually ends up the knife I see is either junk, or like said earlier, a single purchase that is their one knife for all things. I do better making converts of my friends, as I can help guide them along to become true knife knuts.

never really met him in person but have known sharpbycoop for years thru NASIOC (A CAR FORUM)and just recently pm'd him after I found out he was a top photographer in the knife industry.Really cool.

I had a few run-ins, I'll never forget a negative one though. I saw a guy cutting some type of cloth at a restaurant (he worked there) with a Paramilitary. I said "hey, is that a paramilitary, dude?" and he rudely grumbled NO and walked away like I offended him:rolleyes:

It was clearly a PM2, but for some reason he hated me:D

I often wonder how many other 'knuts pass by undetected because they go clipless... I've struck up conversation with a number of Leek owners, but, due to the lack of a secret knifeguy handshake and a handful of awkward encounters in the past, I generally don't inquire about a knife unless I recognize the clip specific to a model. I ran into a guy carrying a Voyager IWB with a zip-wave most recently, turns out he's moving to Colorado and intends to start making knives and has even apparently been poking around this forum for knifemaking tips.

I've only had it happen twice.

I met a door installer for him to bid a job for me and when we shook hands I notice what looked like my dream knife, so I proceeded to ask him if he was a knife collector and he said yes and proceeded to pull out a Rockstead Higo. Coolest thing I've ever had happen and no one else understood why I was so psyched.

I dont bother anymore. Too many times a conversations ends with the other guy having a $20 knife and asking how much mine is because he likes it so much. I respond, about $200, and the look on his face is like im crazy. Conversation over.

Only had it happen once. Employee in an Apple Store saw my clipped knife and correctly identified it as an M390 PM2. We ended up talking knives for 20 minutes. He collects high end folders, both production and customs, and had glamor shots of them all on his iPhone. It was a delightful surprise to meet another enthusiast; I'm glad he said something. He was already assisting me, so it wasn't awkward at all.

Checking out at Fred Meyer yesterday, I was surprised when the female cashier looked at the Knives Illustrated I was buying and said she was a knife person, had worked for years at SOG, and really enjoyed working there, but a relocation had forced her to change jobs. John
