If you remember, about 9 months ago I started a thread and posted some photos of a spearpoint bowie that Russ was going to make for me. Well, that project came to an end about three weeks ago. There were just too many problems cropping up, so Russ and I came up with something different.

Russ will now be making me a clip point bowie with a blade that is a smidgen over 14". It will be made from W-2 and will have a hamon. It will be getting pattern welded steel hardware, and will have a clamshell guard and a true ferrule. The same mammoth ivory will be employed that was going to be used on the other knife.

Attached is a photo showing the rough ground new blade beside a 10" one. The tang has been left a little long so that it can be cut to the right size later. Russ figures this is the largest knife he has made to this point.

Sometimes, even the best laid plans go astray. But I think that you will be more than pleased with the new one.

I like big bowies and this is looking good so far... what is the lenth of the ivory for the handle?

I call dibs on the little one!! :)

Jeez, you guys are slow. ;)

That is a whopper of a bowie, Keith. Sorry the other did not work out, but this one I'm sure will be something very special.

Bowie? Borderline sword.

Things tend to work out for the best. You will end up with big beautiful Bowie.

The ivory is 4 1/2". The overall handle will be about 5 1/4". That will include a ferrule at each end, and a finial. The knife will be of takedown construction, so that is why there will be a finial.

I am dead sure that I will be extemely happy with this knife. Someday I still want a knife with fullers, but that can wait.

Keith, I can guarantee you'll be happy with this knife. :)

I think that will be a given! It has great potential. Going with W2 now that the fullers are out of the equation? I would vote for that.

Looks like an awesome bowie is getting close to completetion. Keith, did Russ ever test the L6 blade after it was decided you weren't using it? I think it was mentioned he was planning on testing it after heat treatment? Just curious.

I am sure both of you have learned a lot on this project. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Clamshell guard! Cool!

Russ does impeccable work. I hope to get another knife from him!

Russ does impeccable work.

Clamshell guard? Might work, might not.....my aversion to the initial spearpoint bowie could not have been any greater....so this would be a fortuitous turn of events imo.

Hope that both you and Russ are happy with the newest project, Keith, look forward to its' completion.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

You know, I had not asked him about that. Last night I emailed him and asked if he had tested the blade, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Roger/Peter......The "little" (10") Bowie is headed for Peter.......!!

Joe....I "tested" two of them. Both were marquenched L6, and testing
consisted of beating the XXX out of them, and pushing them
to distruction. Broken ends showed a grain that was very fine
(but not quite as fine as W2 ).

Don....Shhhhh...Nope, that wasn't it..!

Keith & Russ,
Congrats,you guys!
Sounds like a great project, can't wait to see it finished.
Especially a take down that large.

I was really looking forward to that project, but I knew of it's hardships. Some other time....

No matter what you build, Russ, it will be amazingly well-made and appreciated. No better owner than Keith, either. Cool.

Keep us posted!

Coop, as was the case with the original design, when this knife is done it will be heading your way to be photographed.
