Russ Andrews, part 2

Here are a couple of photos of the blade farther along. The second one gives an idea of what the hamon will look like.

Keith, I'm jealous too. This knife will be NICE!

I'm also partial to your avatar:)

Here are a some photos of some billets of pattern welded steel made for the ferrules. The first photos shows the 70 layer billets. The second photo shows the billets after they have been twisted in opposing directions. Number three they have been reforged square. In number four they are welded together, and in the fifth photo the new single billet has been cut, cleaned and re-welded. Pattern is good, but doesn't show in photo.

That pattern looks very good. I think the fittings will be very nice.

I have enjoyed each chapter in this book. Looking forward to the next.
The ferrules are looking great.

Keith, you have another awesome knife in the making there. What else can a person say about this ?

Here is a photo of the knife with the guard. The upper part of the guard is a clamshell. The blade is finished and has been changed somewhat by making the swedge a little longer, deeper, and it was given a bit more curve. The piece of mammoth ivory has been drilled and the filing to fit the tang has been started.

Keith,

It's turning out great, I know you're happy. Looks like it'll be a killer once it's done, just be sure you don't let Cliff anywhere near it to "test" it... :D

Yehaw! That there's a knife! Can't wait to see the final pics.

Would ya mind my askin' what went wrong with the spearpoint blade? Just too difficult to keep the fullers straight or something? I know there's a reason we don't see more of 'em...

My personal preference might call for a slightly different shape at the point- make it flow more with the straight part of the edge so it retains better thrusting potential, but I'm sure it will do.

Possum,
Fullers were part of it. It seemed something was going wrong
constantly, and with alot of time invested in the project, it was
becoming clear that it just wasn't going to work the way we
wanted to do it.

I asked Keith to consider other options, and he came up the
inspiration for the piece we're doing now.

Thanks for asking.

Russ, thanks for your input on this matter. It is definitely better to have you explain the situation than me.

One thing I can add though, I will be no less happy with this knife than I would have been with the other.

The front ferrule has been soldered to the guard, and both etched.
They'll be etched again before final assembly. The rear ferrule
hasn't been fitted yet. Russ'll do that this afternoon, and start the cap.
When finished, the handle, guard, etc. will be a unit much like
the hilt for a sword.

There should be some images of the knife as a whole by the end of the week.

I think, and Russ correct me if I am wrong, that the ricasso is too long. The ferrule is a good width to match it, but right now, it looks lopsided....IF I am correct, than it should be workable to shorten it.

Best Regards,
