Russell Green River Knives

Is this the same blade?

yes, I believe it is.

I will ask here, would an upswept skinner been around and used by long hunters in the 1700s? Much like this? I don’t believe Russell knives were around until the 1800s but would a similar knife been around?

Yes.
Imported from Sheffield and Solingen (spelling?), possibly from other countries.
I've seen concurrent paintings and sketches of Rendezvous held in the 1700's with trappers/"mountain men" having that style blade.
A very old pattern, it might date to the 1600's or earlier.
It was not invented by RGR (or Old Hickory).

I think it is still produced in England/Britian, and Germany, today.

This isn't a green river, but a Dexter Russell industrial.

Anyways I was just doing some tool shopping with HJE ( check them out) and stumbled across this one which I wasn't aware of so for the $11.50 I went ahead and tacked it onto my order.

HJE listed the Russell rope knife as Stainless steel, but the spine of the blade sure didn't look like Stainless steel to me, so I dripped a bit of cold bluing on the blade and it turned black instantly.

This thing is definitely carbon steel I figured I'd just live with the SS blade when I ordered it, but I'm definitely happy that it's carbon steel.

It's about 2.5mm thick with a full flat grind so it's nice and thin , but not too thin and is still good and stiff.
I think this blade has a lot of potential.

I don't know exactly where I'll go with it, but for now I just rounded the end of the handle off.

I like Russell Green River Knives. I just ordered one of these! Thanks for the info!

I decided to turn it into a spear point and I rehandled it in some walnut.

I just winged it so I'm not sure how I feel about it yet, but if I'm not happy it's still a functional knife and I can always order another one.
I actually really liked the factory blade profile, it just didn't look that great with this handle.
It ended up looking like a jumbo version of the old hickory folder Ontario had come out with a few years ago.

Looks Great!

great work!! how do you countersink the holes for the bolts? I screw mine up every time
I use a rivet drill from Jantz Knife Supply. They are made in different sizes. Funny that you asked cause I just received a new one literally this morning. I'd been working on a set of steak knives and had two holes drilled when I broke my old one a few days back. Well it was 10-15 years old so I probably got my $$ worth. Here's the new rivet drill with a 5/16 Loveless bolt in copper. The rivet drills are made in different sizes depending on your bolts.

It drill both the hole for the bolt and the hole for the nut at the same time and keeps them lined up. I had predrilled a #30 size hole when glueing the handles on the blades. I had two holes only on one side of one knife when the old rivet drill broke:

So mounted er up in my drill press and finished off. A drop of glue in each hole and then screw in the bolts. All done:

Man those birds eye rivets with stag look wonderful!
Thank you sir!!

Here is a patch knife from Russel Green River that I modified/reshaped into a mini Nessmuk style knife. It is destined either for the kitchen or pocket carry. I handled it in giraffe bone that I jigged myself (perhaps why it looks amateurish lol). I think it may be my new favorite little knife.
