I am beyond proud to announce that Russell Reece has graduated from my apprentice program. As you probably already know, Russell studied initially under my former apprentice Ron Solomon (RIP). You probably also know that Russell was already an accomplished craftsman before getting into making knives. He worked in the family business as a trim carpenter for years. I love teaching people like this how to make knives, and over the years I had given some demo's to Russell even before he decide to become an apprentice. Along the way Russell had expressed interest in working at Fiddleback Forge and becoming an apprentice. When I finally brought him aboard, we were all very impressed. Not only is he a craftsman in his soul, but he is about the most solid man I've ever met. Russell is just dependable. Its been a pleasure to have him here, and an honor to have him as an apprentice. His knives are among the cleanest I have ever seen.

The knife he gave me as his apprentice knife is one of his Mini Strebig model. The knife has a 4.5" handle and a 3.5" blade. Its a drop point bushcrafting style knife. This one (requirement for the grad knife) has a tapered tang. The scales are black canvas micarta with a natural canvas liner and white pinstripe. Russells 5 pin config and double tube in natural micarta finish the knife off. Its a beauty, and the style of it and handle materials are right up my alley. In addition, it is (of course) very comfortable in the hand.

The litmus test for a graduation knife is whether or not the knife is done as well as I could have done it. This one definitely is. I can't find a stray scratch even. The usual things I check are centered edge, a pretty plunge, same height grinds that exit the blade at the same spot on the tang, no gaps or glue lines, properly finished handle, spines that are square, and softened edges on the spine and guard area. Of course, I am also critical of the design.

Russell nailed it. Good job buddy.

Andy you’ve had some great apprentices... not just as knife makers, but as individuals. Russell is at the top of that list.

Congratulations Russell! Hoping you don’t stray too far from the Fiddleback group so we can cross paths and hang out again. Graduating from the Fiddleback apprenticeship is the ‘coolest’ thing I can think of adding to a resume. Best of luck in your future endeavors!

Congratulations Russell!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The Mini Strebig was my first Cohutta and is one of my favorite knives. Love the blade shape and the handle is phenomenally comfortable.

Just look at it, I mean look at it! :thumbsup:

I am eagerly awaiting a Micro!

Congratulations @Cohutta!! Awesome job on that Mini Strebig. A number of people have bragged about the quality of your knives. I looked forward to the opportunity to see some first hand at this year's Blade Show, and I was not disappointed. The Tellico I was fortunate enough to purchase is outstanding, and it definitely won't be my last Cohutta knife.

And... a pretty plunge is a particularly perfect plus.

I think he's kinda alright I guess?!! LOL :D
I couldn't agree more Andy! Fit and finish, design, form, ergos, materials, durability and overall execution just outstanding! Beautiful, quality, tough-ass knives!!! This is a great day for @Cohutta and the Fiddleback Fiddleback Forge family! Russell, congrats brother! Looking forward to watching a great career! :thumbsup:

There is not a more deserving person of the attention. Andy doesn't exaggerate in his regards...Russell is a stand up guy, best of the best. He has an eye for detail that is incredible. He has amazing talent and is probably the most humble guy I've ever met. I'm happy to call him my friend...even if he won't admit it in public...er, or private probably.

I've got a BEAUTIFUL Mini-Strebig waiting on me to pick up and I couldn't be more pumped. I've had to part with all the Cohutta Knives that have come through the door here...marketing, customers first, and all that...so I've been more teased than most since I've actually held so many. But, finally, this one is MINE!

Congrats @Cohutta ...looking forward to watch where it all goes from here.
