Ryan Sword

I still advise beginners to buy the best quality sword they can afford. Some would rather test the waters with swords such as initiated this thread. That's fine. What does seem denial (to me) is that many start buying a cheap sword a week/month, when waiting and saving a bit would provide them a better quality product.

What ever

Hotspur; yes, runaway keyboards can be an addiction in of themselves

Since I started this, sometimes contentious thread, I'd like to point out, and I quote myself:

"For the record, I own a Kris Cutlery katana, and a Hanwei Practical Plus, a Cheness Kaze, and a Showa period, handmade katana, that I paid 75 bucks for (as you know it's addictive). Not impressive to those with the bucks to afford the really good stuff, but the Showa period sword has been appraised, by a personal acquaintance (who is a genuine expert) at $2500-3000. I think that was a pretty decent bargain, tho' I had no clue, when I bought it."

I couldn't agree more, that beginners should save, and buy the best product they can afford. The purpose of the question was not to gain confirmation of what I'm already WELL aware of (that there are a million cheapass, wallhanger swords on ebay)......but to attempt to find out if these "cheap" swords might be a diamond in the rough dealer.....you know....an undiscovered bargain. The concensus has been......they are just more crap! Fine....... but, ya' never know unless you ask.

And, as I also mentioned, there are quite a few "good" sword makers, respected on this forum (at one level or the other), that were at one time "unknown" until discussed here and elsewhere. I'm clearly in the "beginner" class (whatever that is) , but I do have a couple of, what "I" consider to be, pretty decent swords, if not (obviously) up to the quality of Bugei or Clark (I didn't expect them to be), or the standards of other forum members (with much more disposible income than I will ever have) . They are certainly sufficient for my purposes (And in the grand scheme of things, that's all I find important). Was just looking to add to the "collection" on the cheap. This thread has been a source of helpful information for future consideration. Thanks.

Well, on the flip side. Even simple internet searchs for information can lend a hand. Here is but one thread from SBG.

Ryan Sword

What the Chinese figured out is that making the wallhangers out of "real high carbon steel" was just as cheap (or cheaper) for them as making them out of "stainless" steel. Are there diamonds in the rough to be found? Sure, but the normal caveats always apply. By the time you refit a fifty dollar sword to last, it often adds up to the price of a Cheness or Hanwei anyway. Some like to noodle around, that's fine too.

Hopefully the link works. I imagine I could finds threads at that horrid and despicable forum named SFI as well:p

Cheers

"The concensus has been......they are just more crap!"

Nobody who posted in this thread owns a Ryan sword and no evidence as to the quality or lack there of as regards these specific swords was presented so how did you conclude that a concensus had been reached that these are crap?

The only thing that was put forward here is that; they must be crap because they are priced so low.

I'm just curious and wonder if you could point out the exact passages that led you to reason as you did.

The only specific mentions of Ryans swords that I have personally seen wasn't here but at SBG where one forumite who purchased a few years ago was entirely dissatisfied and another forumite who examined one of these several months ago and was incredibly impressed. I conclude there can be no concensus formed based on information here or even at SBG since there simply aren't enough of these in forumites hands at either of these two forums to form any basis for a judgement.

I've read the entire post and no one has given the answer, does Bugei worth the money ?

:D

That's a question only you can answer for yourself. If you want something shiny to hang on your wall, probably not. If you want something to slash 2 liter bottles in the back yard there are far more friendly price points that can provide you what you need. On the flip side if you are used to using custom pieces made to your specifications... probably not. However, if you are in the market for a high end production sword, yes probably they are.
