S!K Handle Scale Photo Library

As my incoming 5.1 will be my first foray into S!K ownership, can you guys explain the sanding/oiling procedure some have mentioned? I'm familiar with cleaning micarta-- soap/hot water/toothbrush. But the sanding and oiling is new to me.

I'll let someone jump in with a better answer, but in my experience, sanding is definitely not needed. Some might do it to add some extra texture. Again, someone tell me if I'm wrong, but I think the oiling is the last step in cleaning and just cosmetic to make the color more vibrant.

Silver Needle is correct. Usually all thats needed is a good scrub with dishsoap and a sponge. Some people oil their scales with mineral oil to make the colors pop. The necker 2 scales that I said were freshly sanded were ones that I modified, cutting them down and then rounding the front of the scale. There was two distinct shades of green showing after they were cut down so I used 220 grit to blend them together. Sanding just creates a little more texture and exposes a some of the canvas fibers, lightening the shade of green. Sanding is not really anything you need to do. Honestly oiling is nothing that needs to be done either. Its just for the look or feel. Micarta and g10 is virtually maintenance free.

Green Canvas on top, brand new

Camo Canvas on bottom, older and definitely worn a little slicker

Green canvas, fresh from the shop. Barely even handled, just received yesterday.

Good to know-- glad I read that before trying to sand the scales! I typically stick to soap and water for my maintenance so I'll continue that with the new 5.1.

Oooooooooo..... I had thought, re-thought, and thought again about getting mine with Jade. That is PURTY!!! Definitely need to order some of those.

That REALLY looks good... No ... GREAT!

Jade green wth blue liners underneath looks sick! The liners show through. There were some barkies that had that color combo and it was always cool looking. Maybe someone will make some liners for jade scales and take some pics

You read my mind!! Except I saw some orange liners that made the Jade look like transpartent orange....

Now I gotta know. What is that "White" on the bottom left?

It is the white melamine linen. We loved that first handle but when we ordered it later, the batch had a yellow tint to it. Like peed on snow. We didn't order any after that. There are a few Necker II sets, but those have some inconsistencies as well so they get used for shop knives.

That stinks! The bright white ones look like something a Stormtrooper would carry.

Hahahaha that comparison made my evening!
