Ok guys, seems there are alot of knowledgable gun guys here so I would like some of your opinions. I put a S&W MP15R on layaway yesterday and it will be my first AR. I dont have any experience with AR's at all but I want to get one now and we all know why. This paticular gun is calibered in 5.45x39.
What do you guys think about this gun and why, do you think it is a good gun for my first AR? Thanks for any and all input on this.

While the 5.45x39 is a great round there is a down side to it. Right now the ammo is available at gun shows and online but the odds of finding it at a store on the shelf are slim. If you can get a large quantity of ammo now then you should have no problem but if you are planning on doing a lot of shooting don't expect to walk into Walmart and find ammo. The .223 is much easier to find anywhere however it was slightly more expensive than the 5.45x39 at the last gun show I attended.

5.45x39 is still a great round, I would just question the ammo availability in the future. It may be around in quantity for a long time but no way to really know.

As far as the S&W goes, I have had no problems with them and would not have a problem recommending them to anyone.

Just my 2 cents, for what its worth......................

Just like Garth said, I'd worry about ammo availability in the future. I am sure it'll be a nice AR though.

so if you would be worried about ammo for those calibers what calibers would you guys not be worried about ammo for?

Thanks Garth, I know you are a big gun guy so your .02 is worth alot to me.

I dont plan on doing a whole lot of shooting and I can get the ammo real cheap online. If worse comes to worse I guess I could buy a 5.56 upper for it, cant I?

so if you would be worried about ammo for those calibers what calibers would you guys not be worried about ammo for?

I think that 308, 30-06, 223, 270, 243 and 30-30 are the best selling and sure to be available 'til the end. Russian designed and made ammo could be zapped by executive order and you'd be waiting for US firms to begin to make it in quantity. I only own 22 lr, 223/5.56, 308/7.62 and 300 win mag rifles. All those calibers are popular with hunters and are used in the military. A nice combo IMO.

It's a fine choice.

You will be able to get 4,000 rounds of 5.45 ammunition for the price of 1K of decent .223 ammunition.

5.45 is available as Bulgarian or Russian surplus. They are packed in sardine cans which have a very long shelf life. Wolf makes a commercial version (i.e. ammo that is not gov/mil surplus) that is non-corrosive. Otherwise EVERY KNOWN ROUND for the 5.45 should be considered CORROSIVE. This means the primer has a chemical composition that deposits salts on the inside of the bore, which attracts water and will eventually rust the bore.

This salt will not dissolve with gun cleaning solvents; you need to use hot soapy water or better yet, run some Windex-soaked patches through the bore. The ammonia dissolves the salts. Make sure you dry thoroughly and oil the bore.

I don't honestly know if the S&W guns have a chrome-lined bore or not. If they aren't, you ABSOLUTELY must perform the above servicing after even 1 round fired. IF they are chrome-lined, consider the above somewhat optional but a very, very good idea. Guns will rust in as little as 12 hours in a humid climate.

The armchair tacticians will tell you how horrible the 5.45 is as a man-stopper; how the velocity is low and it's not much better than getting hit with a spitwad. Nonsense. I dare any of them to get shot by it. I have found the milsurp 5.45 to be very accurate out of my AK's. I haven't shot it from an AR.

As you pointed out, the versatility of the AR15 platform is the interchangeability of the upper receivers. If you so desire, you can get a "mil-spec" upper receiver and put it on your lower receiver and with the proper magazines and buffer choices shoot .223, 6.8 remington, even .50 caliber rounds. With a bit more modification you can run pistol calibers. Hell, there's even an upper that takes the FN 5.7 round with 50 round magazines. All of these will work on your lower receiver.

If you weren't aware, the lower receiver is considered the firearm. It has the serial number. You can still buy upper receivers without any registration or restrictions. Once you have a lower receiver, you're good to go.

I can guarantee you that Obamination will restrict the importation of ammunition. The first to go will be "non-sporting" ammunition such as milsurp ammo. That means your cheap 5.45. You MUST get online and order as much 5.45 as your credit card can handle. It will NEVER be cheaper than it is now. Ever.

You will be always be able to get at least what you paid for it, and as time goes on, much more. If I had more space, I'd be stocking up on it. I have about 15K rounds right now. I shoot it in my post-sample 5.45 Bulgarian Krinkov. It is MOA accurate (proven), reliable and fun to shoot (obviously). Plus, at 8 cents a round, it's almost .22LR cheap.

So, to make things easy for you- BUY THE GUN ASAP. YOU MADE A FINE CHOICE. IF you don't like 5.45, I'll trade you out uppers.
Oh, forgot to add- buy a crapload of magazines as well.

The S&W M&P's are chrome lined. I just got one in 5.56/.223.

From everything I've read, they're good guns.

I liked the feel and the fit/finish better than the comparable Bushmaster I shopped.

Simon520,
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain all this. Like I said I am new to AR's but I want to learn as much as possible about them. Do you know where I can get the mags for a good price?
Thanks again for the info.

Just remember, with ammo, you get what you pay for.

you can always get 5.45 ammo on-line but in the case of an emergency, natural disaster or whatever you will not be able to find any.i like to think that even if the world was ending their would be some .223,7.62 & .308 ammo floating around with their abundance.

the 5.45 is really a pretty cool round.i've put an AK-74 {5.45} right next to a AK-47 {7.62 obviously} and noticed a big difference.i never got to try it side by side with .223 though.i think that would be interesting since the russians designed the 5.45 based on their admiration for our .223/5.56.america really started the smaller caliber rifle trend.we where shooting 30-06 in the military a couple wars back.

the russian/afghanistan war was where the 5.45 first saw action and was nicknamed the "poison bullet" due to the damage it did.

its purposely designed to be very stable in flight but extremely unstable on impact.i think the .223 starts tumbling after 5-6 inches where the 5.45 starts to tumble at 2 inches.bottom line its one of the nastiest bullets to get shot by and has a tendency to take off entire limbs upon impact which if coarse what attracted me to it but thing with ammo and clip availability deterred me.

Ok guys, after doing some more reading and research I decided it might be a better idea to go with the 223. So I went to the gun shop today and swapped the MP15R for the MP15T. Alittle more money but comes with more features like front and rear BUIS sites and freefloating barrel. I have read alot of good things about this rifle and think it will serve me well. Thanks for your opinions and please feel free to let me know what you think of the MP15T.

Good move dobywon:thumbup:

Mags - C Products, AR-Stoner, Brownells.

Buy a couple upper/lower/bolt parts kits, a carrier scraper, and have someone that knows ARs check that your carrier key staking is up to snuff. I've seen too many ARs made in the last decade suffer the short stroke sloppy stake blues.

IIRC, you are located in the vicinity of Blagoville. If so, shoot me an email, I know of a place where there is some XM193 in good supply...around there you are not likely to find any;)

I found a brand-spanking new Colt 6920 today for 1599$

I BOUGHT a brand-spanking new LMT for 1450$ :eek::eek::eek:

BTW Lee...if you go toM4Carbine.net and look in the AR section, there is a sticky with a chart discussing and comparing the major AR manufacturers today according to MilSpec. PLENTY of great information there, and you don't have to register.

And now it begins... Which red dot? Aimpoint? or Eotech?

What ammo you going with? Stock? Rails? Grip? Mags? Light? Trigger? Case? etc. etc.

Congrats Doby - Have Fun!!!

Stuck, huh? I'm sure you'll be okay with the one or two you have. ;)

I am waiting patiently til it arrives. Figured I'd be well-served buying top of the line the first time. That 6920 at 1599$ was a fantastic price too though, considering how much a markup I've seen attached. I was really surprised when I asked the guy behind the counter if they had any and he went in back and came back with one wrapped in plastic. The tag said 1799$, but I've done business there a few times. It was 1599$ if I took it today, 1700$ if I put it on layaway. I think they were asking like 1150$ on the S&W...then they had Bushies and RRA.

I have the M&P15T and I like it for an off the shelf AR. It's got Troy Industries furniture and buis which I think is much much better than the YHM furniture on the compatable Bushy Modular Carbine.
