S&w mp15r

Stuck, huh? I'm sure you'll be okay with the one or two you have. ;)

I am waiting patiently til it arrives. Figured I'd be well-served buying top of the line the first time. That 6920 at 1599$ was a fantastic price too though, considering how much a markup I've seen attached. I was really surprised when I asked the guy behind the counter if they had any and he went in back and came back with one wrapped in plastic. The tag said 1799$, but I've done business there a few times. It was 1599$ if I took it today, 1700$ if I put it on layaway. I think they were asking like 1150$ on the S&W...then they had Bushies and RRA.

Congrats on your AR Jason.

Ok guys, after doing some more reading and research I decided it might be a better idea to go with the 223. So I went to the gun shop today and swapped the MP15R for the MP15T. Alittle more money but comes with more features like front and rear BUIS sites and freefloating barrel. I have read alot of good things about this rifle and think it will serve me well. Thanks for your opinions and please feel free to let me know what you think of the MP15T.

Good decision. a great rifle. get plenty of mags for it. Get P-mags, and aluminum mags made by OKay or D&H. Don't mess with that C-products crap unless you want to exchange them a few times until you get all good ones. Lancer is another good composite mag. For ammo there is plenty of the Federal XM193 out there at about $400 per thousand. PPU/Prvi ammo is fine but not US made. Wolf sucks, don't bother with it, spend the extra money on the good stuff.

Thanks, Lee, same to you! Gonna go out and take a carbine class or two when you pick it up? I am missing a great class with Mercop as we speak. My brother GentleBen brought him down here for a 2-day course, but they could only get the private ranger on Friday and Sat, and with the baby coming I couldn't really justify taking my last sick day. Wifey's had a tough pregnancy, so...

Anyway, I you do get some training in, make sure to sure your AAR with us.

Jason,

So you had to order your LMT? What goodies does it come with? What made you decide to go with the LMT over the 6920, if you don't mind me asking?

The LMT is actually coming from a reputable smith who does custom 1911's and AR's. He only sells LMT and Colt, because those are really the only AR's he has seen with consistently high QC standards.

My reasons for choosing the LMT over the 6920 are two-fold.

1: According the comparison done by Rob S. over on M4Carbine.net, the manufacturer who comes closest to milspec is LMT. The LMTs only have two things outside of milspec which the Colt has inside: straight roll pins instead of tapered ones, no parking under the fsb. The rest is all to Milspec...which means pretty much every gun that comes off LMT's line is made the same way, according to the same standards, and will (theoretically) run the same. Besides the legacy of the prancing pony, this standard has a LOT to do with m Colt commands the presence it does--in both 1911's and AR's.

I said all of that to get to this: the smith I'm buying this custom LMT from nib does a reliability package which includes replacing the straight roll pins with tapered ones, the only non-milspec part on LMT's outta his shop is that there is no parking under the front sight.

That said, the gun is 16" chrome-lined, 1/7 twist, flat top with troy folding stocks, M4 fore-grip, a Crane sliding stock, full auto BC, a2 flash hider, and some other things. Pretty much the LMT version of the 6920.

2: price. While the price I got on the Colt was good considering the hysteria, that 1599$ turns into 1715$ after taxes and paperwork. The LMT is 1450$ pls shipping and a 30$ transfer fee. No taxes. I get to save almost 200$ and get the same quality of gun WITH a reliability package perfomed by a well-respected Smith.

That will be a great package for sure. Please share some pics and reviews when you get it. Congrats again, That is a heck of a deal, especially at this time!

I bought a 6920 and have been very pleased with it. Changed out the rear sight to a Troy folder, put on an Aimpoint M3 w/LaRue mount, Daniel Defense Omega rail w/Tango vertical grip and LaRue light mount. Also replaced the grip with a Miad - She runs great!

If you want absolute MILSPEC, there are Colt Factory M4's out there. Well, to be absolutely honest, they can't be true M4's because they're not full auto machineguns, but they are the closest thing to it while still being civilian-legal.

If you want a factory Colt M4, you can get one. Semi auto, of course. Receivers are marked "M4LE"

They are factory Short Barreled Rifles, models LE6921 and LE6933 so if you live in a state that allows NFA firearms, they will transfer to you or your company/trust.

If you live in an AW-friendly state that is non-NFA or you don't have any way to get a Law Enforcement signoff, the dealer can take the 14.5" upper and silver-solder a longer flash-hider so it's not under 16" anymore. It will be removed from the purview of the NFA and you have a Colt M4. It just won't go full auto.

I suppose that since the receivers are not mentioned by name, they would be Federally and State legal to transfer in CA (as bare receivers) to individuals when removed from the NFA.

The 6920 would be exactly what I was looking for (an LE 16" semi-auto M4), but I'm going to be VERY happy with the LMT. I'm not too worried about the parking under the FSB. Quite frankly, I'd be more concerned about the assemblers at Colt, than having a smith do a good, custom once-over, due to the fact that Colt manufactures a LOT of guns. There are bound to be assembly issues with them, as evidence by plenty of posts of things like gas tubes being installed backwards, etc.

I can tell you from experience with hundreds of AR/M16 rifles in every conceivable configuration and hundreds of thousands of rounds...

I've never seen one fail from lack of parkerizing under the FSB. Nor have I ever seen the FSB pins back out.

Your best bet for a "reliability" mod is to ensure you have adequate tension under the extractor. A #60 oil/fuel resistant O-ring over the extractor spring works great, with/without the black/blue insert with/without a Wolff high-power spring.

I don't have a problem using non-Colt parts EXCEPT BOLTS. I won't use anything other than a magnetic particle-tested Colt bolt. Yes, I do make sure the headspace is within specs on my uppers when they are installed.

Many more AR's have stoppages due to extraction issues than anything else in my experience. Also, getting to the 1000-1200 round mark means you absolutely need to clean the gun on a DI system.

Exactly what I figured (the fsb thing), which is why I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with the LMT.

I will speak with the smith, and ask whether your suggestions are part of his reliability package. Thanks for the advice.

Ordered my LMt about two months ago, should arrive mid April early May. Freakin going out of my mind waiting!

.223...it's pretty universal FWIW.
I just purchased a mini-14,and with the ar-15 coming soon(also .223),
I only need to pack one ammo breed. If all these fail...
I guess it,s back to swords and knives for me...

Hey Damond...care to give us a little review of that thing? I'm in the market...

I'm thinking about that one myself. There was one review on site (5/5):

Comment: This case is an excellent value. I would buy another one if I didn't already have a collection of cases going. The 36" is perfect length for an M4 length AR-15 with the telescoping stock collapsed. There are heavy velcro straps to hold it in place and corners of padded material to hold the ends. There are actually two sets of straps for two rifles/shotguns but if you have an optics on your weapon I highly doubt two would fit. I could not get an M4 with an EOTech and MP5 in together. No matter. This case is still a super deal. The material is heavy and feels durable. There is ample padding and overall appears to be well made.

Like someone said, grab some mags:

Guyon,

I heard that the p-mag wouldnt fit the MP15 without a slight modification.

Is this true or do they fit fine?

Not true. They work in any standard AR-15 lower. Good choice going back to the gunshop and changing to 5.56, especially for your first AR.

I have said that LMT is my favorite several times on this board and others. My LMT Defender has been the best performing of any AR I've ever owned, including a Colt that is now sold. YMMV
