S30V or 154CM for Custom Shoppe 110?

Maybe just one of each is warranted? :D I am still undecided...

Although Goose your post does try to sway me a little, but I have never had an issue with my S30V knives. I dont do ribs though ;)

Yeah, I think the stars and planets were lined up just right for that ONE time event Jim.
My 110AG S30V is my favorite 110 EDC after the SS Damascus, the Muskified 1989 Damascus, or my BG-42 Koa, or my...
Damn it...I find myself guilty of being a knife-polygamist!!!

Hi Rifon2...

But I will state that my Kalinga Pro fixed with S30V chipped slightly while cutting up some beef ribs on a plate...kind of surprising as I've had that happend before with other steels w/o problem...but it happened. My lesson was to be certain to use a cutting board instead of china. DOH!!!

Buckaholic,

I thought I'd read a post where an S30V Kalinga chipped...and it's been in my mind since. So glad you posted this again. (Not happy to hear that your knife chipped, though.)
Because while I'd heard/read rumors of S30V chipping, yours was the first post here on BF I'd read saying "it happened to one of my knives."

Well, I still have till Monday to think it over...:)

Hay Guys,

Any of the high end super steels can chip. The harder they are the more brittle...it's a trade off. It don't happen often...but, it can...with any of them. I used my S30V 110 for over a year and never had a chip of any kind. Sh_t happens.

I also understand that a new edge can be a bit more brittle than that same blade once sharpened, getting past the thin original secondary bevel.

...If the offered steels had included CPM 154, THAT would have been my choice on the new "Rammie" over 154CM and S30V...only because I don't have any with CPM154...Doesn't the BassPro 110 have the CPM154?...Like someone here said somewhere..."So many choices....so little money..."...LMBO...:D

CPM154- I would have done as well, but I just sent my order in for Nickel silver, finger grooved, cherry wood with S30V. I love that steel, I cant pass on it...
Thanks Buck for making a great knife, better!

I forgot, there was this little banner at the bottom of the screen when I ordered... something about a lifetime warranty or something ;)
I think I will chance the S30V ;)

Just curious, since I've read all the posts here about BG-42 not being available...

How many of you *called and asked* if there wasn't a BG-42 blade or two available??? You all *know* that rare steels blades (like the Damascus) can be had by calling even when the web site says they are not available...There's just not enough for every order...

I'm serious...How many called??? Hmmm??? :)

(FWIW- I already have *my* CS 110 w/BG-42, smooth Water Boo scales, and NS bolsters [no rivets!]...) :D

Curious Rich...
Good point.
I did write last year or so and was told they were out.
But, have not checked recently.

...hmmm...Wonder if an early morning message left on that Mason feller's answerin' machine would let me change my order to BG-42 if they have it or maybe Damascas...:confused::cool:

But since BG-42 (my favorite) is no longer offered, I'm deciding between S30V and 154CM.

I'll pick the 154CM since the BG-42 ain't in the house any more :(. 154CM is the American version, and very similar to the Japanese ATS-34 in which both take an amazing high-polish finish.

Dave
High polish eh? Thats good to know.
I want 154CM but was actually contemplating the high polish 420HC just because it looks so darn good and suits the nickel bolsters and pins.
i wonder how involved would it be to polish the 154CM myself?

Barring any new price hikes or personal financial disasters i'll be ordering a 110 (FG Sambar(or Rams horn) 154CM with nickel bolsters and pins) Custom before the summers out.

...If yer able to remove the blade and replace it...it would be real easy to do tholiver...If ya don't remove it you'd leave a small unpolished patch where the blade and bolster intersect. I've done it to a number of 110's that friends had who wanted a highly polished blade. 154CM should polish out to mirror finish quite nicely...:thumbup:

My very first custom shoppe order was a sambar stag ,brass bolstered, high polished 420 hc bladed 110.Let me tell you ,it was absolutely THE nicest bark textured ,perfectly matched stag i've ever seen,it was made by Dana Queen, and the fit and finish was better than one could wish for ,the action was like glass.I still have the box and card, knife was stolen along with many others......If i saw that knife along side of 50 others,I would remember it.You will be happy with the mirror polished blade 420 hc is good.

I love threads on steels...I have carried S30V since we started using it. With all the Vanadium it is able to hold an edge without needing to be as hard as the 154cm. That would make it less brittle then 154cm. The 154CPM (powdered version) I do not have much experience with yet.

With that said it should not chip. Goose that is the first I heard about chipping...I must have missed the thread where you posted that before.

As I said...because it does not have to be as hard (Paul puts S30V around 60.5 RC) and 154cm about a full point higher to get the "same" edge retention on the CATRA machine)

You might have gotten a blade that was over hardened a little. If you wanted to send that one into Joe we would send you another or just clean thatone up but I am interested in the Rockwell hardness of your knife. We would reimburse you for all shipping charges...

CJ......don't vanish!!!

Tell all on BG-42.

Will it be offered again? If not, why?

Might there be some available for a custom if we call by phone and check?

And how do you like BG-42 as compared to the other two?

hee hee hee ya dont give up easy do ya Roc?
jest go for the s30v they got...
ya know roc...personaly i prefer the s30v..
was designed as a knife steel from the git go...
i have one of two 560's with it and it is a hell of a combination!
well i guess i own two as i never got paid for the other ..?
any way it makes a great combination!
